Poll: Have you joined the Zune Social?

Amidst all the news of the past day, we were curious to get the pulse out there. How excited are you about the whole Zune Social thing? We’ve gotta admit, when we saw some of the ideas that the peeps over at Microsoft came up with as it pertains to music discovery within Zune, powered by your social network, we were kinda digging it. So, what say you? Have you gone and customized a Zune Card for yourself, maybe even syncing a few to your Zune device? Do you keep WiFi powered on when you take your device out and about in anticipation of swapping tracks? Or are you one of those who just stay as far away from the Social as possible? Sound off and let us know.

Poll: How do you like your movies? Optical disc, or downloadable?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Features, Home Entertainment, Movies,

With the / format war being over, the new “war” if you will is the one between digital delivery of movies, versus good ol’ optical media. We want to know how you feel about this. Do you prefer buying movies using Apple TV, thus avoiding a trip to the local Target? Or are the type of person who prefers all the bells and whistles that something like a Blu-ray disc has to offer (7.1 lossless audio, pure 1080p video)? I think it is safe to say that we are moving towards a digital download lifestyle, but with current broadband speeds in the USA, we think that it might be a while before it can compete with optical. Your thoughts?

Poll: Does Windows on a Mac affect your PC purchasing decisions?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Software,

In light of the news that has sold over 1 million copies of their Parallels Desktop for Mac software, we figured we’d gauge the pulse of the Gear Live community to see what you guys think. The other day, Apple reported some amazing sales figures as far as the Mac goes. Desktops and portable sales are up. We are thinking there is a connection between those numbers and the fact that Parallels - which lets you run Windows inside of OS X - has been selling to well.

So we want to know, how does the fact that you can run Windows right on your Mac, and inside of OS X, affect your PC purchasing decisions?

Poll: Do you skew towards environmentally friendly purchases?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Design, Features,

As we wind down Earth Day 2008, we wanted to check in with you guys to see just how environmentally concious you are when making your gadget purchases. We want to know, when you are making a purchase, do you care how environmentally friendly it is? Do you check the EnergyStar rating and compare it to other items? Do you look for packaging that can be recycled? Or do green gadgets not really strike your fancy?

Let me know - and feel free to hit the comments if you feel like explaining yourself a bit more.

So, did you e-File this year?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet,

We figured it was time to start throwing polls into the mix here at Gear Live, as it’s an oft requested feature from our readers. That being said, now that we are just shy of a week after tax time (you did remember to file your taxes, right?) and we want to know if you guys take advantage of the e-File method of doing thing, or if you rely on the more traditional practice of mailing everything in to the IRS in a -style envelope. How geeky do you keep it? Let us know.

CNN: In it for the Long Haul

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Specials, Cable, News,

Barack ObamaCable news network will try something never-before-seen for this year’s exciting election coverage: they’re going to squeeze all the fun out of it with consecutive forty-hour live coverage. And you thought they couldn’t possibly make poll results more uninteresting.

February’s “Super Tuesday” is the event. Coverage begins at six in the morning Feb. 5, when polls open in more than twenty states. The coverage ends at 11 pm the following Wednesday. Results of the polls won’t even be available until well into the evening of Feb. 5, but that’s not stopping CNN. Meanwhile, the network will show live coverage of candidates through the weekend, including debates. It’s all the politics you can stand, complete with tired TV anchors and plenty of pretty poll graphs. But don’t let’s get too far ahead of ourselves…the White House isn’t empty yet.

So that no one forgets we still have a President in office, will preempt network programming this coming Monday night for an hour-and-a-half-long State of the Union address. I always have a bad feeling when one of these occurs, fearful as always that the US is about to declare war on yet another country. But who knows? Maybe he’s just going to give us all health care instead of going to war. That’ll be that day.

Presidential Race Changed by Iowa

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Specials, Cable, News,

Barack ObamaEven those who aren’t politically savvy know about the Iowa Caucuses - perhaps that’s why they were covered on three different networks Thursday evening. The results are in, the votes tallied, and the outcome of the Caucus is pretty surprising. On the strength of these results alone, two Presidential hopefuls have already completely dropped out the race. That’s the strength of popular opinion…at least, in Iowa.

Republican was declared winner for his party early in the evening, with and falling well behind Huckabee in votes. Early Republican frontrunner had a dismal showing with only 14%, while former mayor barely even registered on the poll.

On the Democratic side, leapt to an early lead and held on, becoming the party winner before the night was all said and done. Surprisingly, it was not but who fell into second place. brought up the rear with a low 4%, while Democratic hopefuls and - who have both since dropped out of the race - received 1% and 0% of the vote respectively.

CNN Hosts Democratic Debate Tonight

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Specials, Cable, Editorial, News,

Hillary ClintonThe Democratic contenders in the Presidential race will take the stage tonight in another primary debate. The University of Nevada will host the event, which will be captured for posterity (and our criticism) by TV cameras. All the action begins at 8pm.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching the primary debates (for both opposing camps) from the beginning, and I must say there’s simply no better TV on at all. Each new debate sees more pointed comments, more heated arguments and more political “outing” from the competitors. Everyone’s policy is on the table for review, everyone’s actions will be called forward and everyone is sure to be at each other’s throats before it’s all said and done. Now, that’s entertainment.

CNN polls for the state of Nevada find in the lead by a huge margin (51%), proving to me that I am one of the few actually watching the debates.  is in second place with 23% of the popular vote while still in the running at 11%. , surprisingly, has surged ahead of other competitors with 5% of the vote, followed closely by who has 4%.  Both and have 1% of the popular vote, with 4% of those polled remaining undecided.

We all have to vote for one of these contenders, or one of the Republican debaters, fairly soon. Watch the debates.
