American Idol 10: Nashville Auditions

Nearly 20,000 turned up for American Idol's Nashville auditions. The city is home to the Grand Ole Opry, and it's acknowledged as the undisputed capital of country music. The episode started quickly, launching viewers immediately into auditions.

Here’s the best part: they started with a bad one. Christine McCaffrey treated the new panel to one of the oddest Idol auditions on record. Randy Jackson repeated “really?” several times, clearly annoyed. “That’s not serious,” he told the other two. It was a good start to an episode that moved along fairly quickly, unlike the one that came the day before. How does the new panel stack up against the old? Have some singers already started to shine? Maybe Nashville provided the answers.

Danny Gokey at American Idol 10 Milwaukee Auditions

Past American Idol contestant Danny Gokey showed up to please the crowd at the Milwaukee auditions, as it’s his own hometown (and he’s not that busy with music right now). The show spent a lot of time on the city and the judges (Randy Jackson isn’t familiar with Aerosmith banner hit “Sweet Emotion”) before introducing us to the first contestant of the day.

Did any of them stand out? Will one of them be the next Idol? Tuesday's was a long episode … but did it provide a big payoff?

Willow Smith to Star in Annie Remake

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Family, Music, Musicals, Remakes, Casting,

Willow SmithSomebody cue Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, because we just discovered the Worst. Remake. Ever…and, it hasn’t even been made yet. Take a good look at Will Smith’s pretty daughter Willow. Now, imagine her with red hair.

Actually, the red hair is probably the first thing that’s going to go in the new Annie remake, and that’s only one of the reasons this is the worst idea we’ve ever heard. Willow Smith will take on the iconic role in a new film that’s being produced by -- guess who? -- her daddy’s company Overbrook Entertainment.

Our knee-jerk dislike of the remake idea (the original film, made in 1982, has long been filed in our Untouchable Classics category) probably won’t affect the Smiths, who may soon officially change their surname to Midas. After Jaden Smith raked in more than $300 million in his Karate Kid remake that featured absolutely no actual karate, there’s nothing this family can’t pull off.

Annie is the story of a redheaded orphan whose life is changed when she is adopted by the fantastically rich Daddy Warbucks. Carol Burnett defined the role of the mean orphanage owner who helps concoct a scam to steal Annie back from Warbucks, which eventually fails. The movie, like the Broadway musical that preceded it, is peppered with sensational songs.

And perhaps now, Willow’s “Whip My Hair.” Re-using old scripts is awesome.

Aretha Franklin: Halle Berry Should Be Me

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Biopics, Music, Casting, Rumors,

Aretha FranklinHalle Berry

Aretha Franklin has been very vocal in her wish that Halle Berry should play her on the big screen. When asked about the role, Berry said she was very flattered by Aretha’s wish, but that she can’t sing a note. Franklin, however, doesn’t care.

“I never expected Halle to sing,” Aretha reportedly told a source. “She’s an actress, not a singer. Many actors have portrayed vocalists by lip-syncing to the artist’s original recordings.”

Faking it is a time-honored tradition in Hollywood (see: Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), but we’d like to offer Franklin two more names she ought to consider: Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. Both women are accomplished actresses, and both could certainly belt out an Aretha song for the big screen.

American Idol 10: New Orleans Auditions

American Idol 10 New Orleans Auditions

The New Orleans auditions of American Idol opened predictably -- meaning, slowly. The show celebrated the city and itself before it got around to featuring any singing. Outtakes and footage of the judges was at last followed by the episode’s first auditioner.

There were few bright spots in New Orleans, though with the kinder panel it’s easier than ever for Idol hopefuls to score that golden ticket that will take them all the way to Hollywood. We’re hearing that the Hollywood Rounds will be longer than ever before, and it’s no wonder why. But there were a few in New Orleans who may manage to become more memorable than your run-of-the-mill Idol hopeful.

Anne Hathaway and Glee: Chris Colfer’s Dream Come True

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Music, Prime Time, FOX, Spoilers, Video,

It’s pretty hard to say no to a star when they’re holding a Golden Globe in their hand. Just ask Glee’s Chris Colfer.

Weeks ago, the man behind the Kurt told reporters that he’d like to have Anne Hathaway on the show -- and now, he’s getting his wish.

Hathway caught up to Glee writer/creator Ryan Murphy during Sunday’s Golden Globe celebration, and he’s confirmed that she will be appearing in at least one episode of the series. Previously, Colfer said Hathaway wanted to play his lesbian aunt.

We're convinced she'll nail it, but it's time to ask an important question: can she sing? Watch the video above to hear Murphy's comments.

The Glee Project: On Again

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Reality, Cable, News,

When Glee first premiered, and subsequently became wildly successful, there was lots of buzz about a reality show based upon the series. The idea was nixed just months later, disappointing many fans. But, we’ve got good news: The Glee Project is happening -- and it's hunting for new talent.

The new reality show gives hopefuls the opportunity to star in seven (yes, seven!) episodes of the popular series, but don’t expect American Idol-style auditions if you tune in. According to a recent statement, executive producer Dante Di Loreto wants to nurture new talent, not "make fun of people" who don’t have enough of it.

Look for The Glee Project on Oxygen in June.

Glee: Brittany, Santana and Brittana

Naya Rivera and Heather Morris, Santana and Brittany on Glee

“It keeps changing!” Naya Rivera, known to Glee watchers as Santana, said of her character’s relationship with Brittany (played by Heather Morris). “It’s so complicated … I think ultimately they are best best friends, and as far as [Santana’s] sexuality, that’s one of the great mysteries of the show.”

Many fans love the idea of Brittana -- a girl-girl couple featuring, naturally, Santana and Brittany. The two performed a kissing scene early in Season 2 that got plenty of watchers buzzing. “I think that we have great chemistry working together, Heather and I,” Rivera said. “At the end of the day, Brittany and Santana are always going to be best friends, and as far as what they are going to do with their relationship, it’s up to writers, but I would love to represent.”

VIDEO: Nuthin But a Glee Thang, Baby

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Television, Videos,

Chilling until the next episode of Glee is now much, much easier -- and we’ve got Heather Morris to thank.

The blonde Glee star helped write an uproarious new skit for Funny or Die set to the delicate strains of Snoop Dogg’s “Nuthin’ But a G Thang.” That’s right Gleeks … it’s Nuthin’ But a Glee Thang.

Naya Rivera, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith and Harry Shum, Jr. helped out, lending their smooth dance moves to this fantastic all-female rap led by Heather Morris. In the opening scene, Modern Family's Sofia Vergara reminds us that she's not just hot, but hilarious -- all while wearing a Sue Sylvester-style tracksuit.

Check it out in the video above!
