Prince Headlines Super Bowl Halftime
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Sports, CBS, Ratings,
The Super Bowl has gotten in this tradition the past few years of besting the previous year’s halftime show. So, what to do after the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney have taken the stage? Time to turn to his royal purpleness, Prince. That may not get too many football fans jazzed, but I for one think it will make for a lively halftime showing. Hey, I grew up on Prince in the 80s, and while I haven’t been a loyal follower, I do think he has kept his sound interesting enough over the years to maintain a tremendous fan base. His recent five Grammy nominations only make the star that much sweeter. I saw him on Saturday Night Live last season and he was amazing, so I think his gig at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLI will keep me from changing the channel at halftime. Check it out on CBS on February 4th—nearly one billion people in over 230 countries worldwide watched last year’s Super Bowl.

American Idol’s Elliott Yamin—No More Snaggletooth
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, News,
Elliott Yamin had a crazy fan base when he competed on American Idol. Will even more fans jump on board now that he’s undergone $50,000 worth of dental work? Elliott, don’t you know beauty is only skin deep? With porcelain veneers and 20 hours of dental time to fix his crossbite, we’ll see if the makeover was worth the pain of a new smile. Girlfriend Jaime Paetz said, “He loves to laugh, he loves to smile. I liked his old teeth, but if (the veneers) make him happy, then I’m happy.”
Beverly Hills dentist David Frey provided the dental work free of charge, so I guess it was a no-brainer to have the work done. “I’ve always wanted to have a nicer smile,” says Yamin. “I used to look at old pictures of myself, and I figured out how to kind of smile without displaying all my teeth.” Yamin just signed on with Sony’s publishing division for a songwriting deal and his debut album will drop in early 2007. Ah, plenty of reasons to smile.

VH1 Big In ‘06 Awards—Big Waste?
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Music, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
I tried to watch the VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards, I really did. But I just couldn’t help thinking this was a colossal waste of time. I love awards shows as much as the next gal, but this one is completely unnecessary. But maybe that’s the point. The event kicked off with host D.L. Hughley telling a bunch of unfunny jokes at rapid fire pace, followed by the first presenters of the night—the cheerleader from Heroes and Tommy Lee. Ugh. They presented the award for Big Music Artist to Justin Timberlake, and even he seemed unexcited to be there. Next up? Backstage interviews to come courtesy of VH1’s darling, Flavor Flav. Double Ugh. That’s where they lost me. Appearances included Eva Longoria, Lance Bass, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Joey Lawrence, Katharine McPhee, Masi Oka, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose,) and more, with a special performance by Dennis DeYoung. That’s a big “huh?” from me, but maybe Dennis DeYoung is making a comeback or something? Anyway, winners included David Hasselhoff (Big Comeback), Britney Spears (Big Mama), Stephen Colbert (Big Breakthrough), Janelle Pierzina (Big Reality Star, Big Brother All-Stars), Katharine McPhee (Big IT Girl), Kiefer Sutherland (Big TV Star).

The Wiggles’ Yellow Shirted Singer Leaves Group
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Cable/Satellite, News,
A sad day for fans of the popular kids’ show, The Wiggles. In a recorded statement, yellow shirted performer Greg Page said he would be leaving the group due to illness. Page has been diagnosed with orthostatic intolerance, which is a chronic condition, but not life-threatening. The 34-year-old singer said that due to the illness “I’ll no longer be able to sing and dance as I want to, and as a result I’ve decided to stop performing with The Wiggles.” Apparently the disorder causes dizziness, nausea and fatigue—and with a rigorous schedule of live tours that are packed with plenty of dancing, the show can’t go on for Page. An understudy, who has performed as a backup singer and dancer for the group, as well as filled in for tour dates that Page had to drop out of, will be filling the yellow shirt. “I’ll miss being a part of The Wiggles very much, but this is the right decision because it will allow me to focus on managing my health,” Page said. The Wiggles were named Australia’s top-earning entertainer last year, pulling in $39 million.

Britney Spears Files For Divorce From K-Fed
Not that we necessarily want to see marriages fall apart or anything, but we are certainly intrigued at this latest bit of news. Apparently, Kevin Federline (who has been all over WWE programming as of late) and Britney Spears are suffering from enough “irreconcilable differences” that Brit felt it was time to split from the wannabe rapper. Of course, this is all heresy until we hear it from one of their respective representatives, but it’s being reported from such sources as People Magazine and TMZ. Britney is said to be seeking custody of the couples two children, Sean Preston (1) and Jayden James (2 months). I guess this is what happens when your relationship gets a little too Chaotic?

Grey’s Anatomy Gives The Fray a Boost
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Music, Prime Time, ABC, NBC, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, Internet,
In other Grey’s Anatomy news, the series has featured two videos by the band The Fray—and given the rock group significant exposure. The hit series aired a four-minute video following the September 7th episode for the single “How to Save a Life,” featuring clips from the show. They followed it up two weeks later with an extended video with additional scenes. And that’s not all—the videos were available on web sites, including ABC.com, as well as electronic magazines. ABC Entertainment senior VP of marketing, Michael Benson, said that the value of the videos were in their ability “to become great content for TV viewers… going beyond the 30-second promo and driving people back to television.”
The band has definitely seen a jump in sales, with between 2,000 and 3,000 copies being sold per week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. To date, the album has sold 897,000 copies, while the title track has sold 622,000 digital downloads. The song “How to Save a Life” is also featured on the Grey’s Anatomy, Volume 2 soundtrack.
For my money, however, I think the tune “How to Save a Life” was a much better fit on last season’s episode of Scrubs, titled “My Lunch.” I was bawling—Scrubs has always done an excellent job of integrating music into every storyline and the inclusion of “How to Save a Life” made me rush out and buy The Fray’s CD the very next day.
