Rock Star Supernova on the Rocks?

Rock Star Supernova The second edition of Rock Star seemed destined for crappiness as soon as they crowned Lukas Rossi their lead singer. The search for the lead singer of a new band, Supernova, started last year, and by the end of the show there were promises for a big tour kicking off on New Year’s eve. An entertainment news program reported that guitarist Gilby Clarke left the group, but Clarke says “I have not left Rock Star Supernova. We just finished the tour. I don’t know where they got that from. I did an interview with ET Canada, and we talked about the future of the band, but I never said I’ve left the band.” Whether the band will make it, well, weak concert sales and bad reviews for their debut album don’t bode well. Add to that the name issue, although Rossi said, “There will be a name change… the best is yet to come.” My bet is the breakup is yet to come. I’m telling you, they should have chosen Toby.

Simon Cowell Names His Five Idol Faves

Simon Cowell No, Simon isn’t picking out his “myFaves” for T Mobile, but he is naming the singers he thinks are the top five in this year’s cast. The judge everyone loves to hate says this year’s Idols are “not a great cast,” and “not the best bunch of kids we’ve ever had,” but one of them is still going to win – whatever Cowell thinks. He says the race is very close this season, however, and names his top five favorites as Blake, Chris R., Jordin, LaKisha, and Melinda. These singers are often among the top vote-grabbers every week. But is Simon wrong this time? While Cowell has rarely predicted the winner, Bill Tancer from Hitwise has, according to the Boston Globe. Last year he used search engine data from sites like Google to predict the winner, and this year has named Sanjaya as the front runner in the contest – by more than 2 to 1. It’s true the young contestant has garnered more media attention than most, and is searched online more often than any other Idol on this current season or any other, even past American Idol winners.

This One Time… at Idol Camp…

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,

American Idol logo So, they’ve found a great way to extend the American Idol name. Nope, I’m not talking about the fundraiser “Idol Gives Back,” but rather the marketing genius of “Idol Camp.” Can you imagine being the lucky kid who gets to spend 10 days at a camp that grooms Idols in the making? Forget singing around the campfire… this camp promises to bring past American Idol performers to help with training. Campers can expect help from Vonzell Solomon, Jon Peter Lewis, Carmen Rasmusen, Kimberley Locke and Bucky Covington. “This roster of exceptional Idol talent helps to reinforce our commitment to creating a unique American Idol experience while providing children with the ultimate performing arts education,” says Donna Milani Luther, Camp Director. “All of these talented individuals have something special to offer our campers and we’re looking forward to working with them this summer.” Camp begins the first session on July 7 in Northfield, Massachusetts—$2,999 for 10 days of Idol fun.

Jennifer Lopez Guesting On American Idol This Week

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, News,

American IdolThis week, pop princess and movie star Jennifer Lopez will join the ranks of famous celebs to play mentor and guest star on . Tonight’s show will feature J Lo in mentor mode, coaching Idol wannabes on how to reach the high musical heights she has achieved…or, at least, get through this week’s competition. Lopez’s appearance and subsequent performance (scheduled for Wednesday night’s results show, where another Idol will leave the stage for good) coincide with a recent album release. There is no official word from FOX on what Lopez will perform or what tonight’s theme will be, but fans assume that a Latin-inspired evening is in the works. Will Sanjaya give crowds another rollicking performance? Will Haley Scarnato wear something incredibly revealing? Will Paula say something inane, while Simon reams competitors? It certainly wouldn’t be American Idol 6 otherwise, would it? Look for Lopez-coached performances tonight, before the diva herself takes the stage to show the Idols how it’s done during tomorrow’s live episode.

Idol-izing Sanjaya

Sanjaya Malakar, mohawked Two distinct camps have formed around the American Idol 6 season: those for, and those against a single singer. From his changing hair styles to his weird wardrobe choices and continuing lackluster singing, is a hit on the Idol stage. The big question now is…why? Currently, he is the most searched for and sought-after Idol to grace the stage - ever. According to search engine reports, it’s Sanjaya’s name that keeps coming up again and again, even more often than past American Idol winners. Simon Cowell has publicly gone on record to claim he’ll leave the show if Malakar wins, and Sanjaya’s harshest critics have been calling for him to get the boot for weeks now. Meanwhile, singing sensations like Stephanie Edwards, Chris Sligh, and Gina Glocksen have been sent home…and Sanjaya lives to butcher another song. When it comes to Sanjaya, people either love him or hate him, and all have their own reasons. Some of his biggest supporters are championing Sanjaya for a very specific reason: the ruination of the show. Others that love him are true fans (read: young girls). But those that hate him do so with tenacity. Even media criticism hasn’t been enough to sway votes out of his favor. It seems Sanjaya has true Idol staying power…go figure.

Sanjaya: The Tic-Tac-Toe Playing Pig

Sanjaya MalakarI’m starting this article before the foregone conclusion that will happen during tonight’s American Idol results show, that is: Sanjaya isn’t going anywhere.  By the time you read this, you and several million other viewers will be annoyed, whoever leaves instead of Sanjaya will be angry, but do you know who’s going to be the most pissed that Sanjaya is sticking around?  Four people: Randy, Paula, Simon and Ryan.

I’ve been watching Idol off and on since its inception, and there’s always been one constant (well, two if you count Paula’s “your voice is like a rainbow” comments): no matter who the contestant is, no matter how bad he or she is on the show, Ryan and Paula always supported each and every one of those kids.  The Jasmine Triases, the Kevin Covaises, the John Stevenses (not the Supreme Court Justice, the pseudo-crooner), even though they stunk up the joint week after week, Ryan and Paula, the two cheeriest elves on reality tv, were always there to support the kids.

But not anymore.

Idol Extends Results Shows

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, FOX, American Idol,

American Idol Ugh. Just when I was beginning to enjoy the rapid pace of the half hour American Idol results shows, they’ve gone and changed things up. Beginning April 11th, the Wednesday shows will run an hour and continue that way through May. Now, wouldn’t you think that as the pool of contestants gets smaller, the need for an hour-long show is less necessary too? Ah, no one knows needless filler like American Idol—more dramatic Seacrest pauses, more Ryan/Simon insults, more cheesy group performances. The change apparently comes at the producers’ request, since the eliminated contestants haven’t had enough time to give their final performances. Again though, as the final numbers dwindle, there should be more than enough time to get in that last song.

An Osmond Reunion?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, Rumors,

Donny OsmondThis one is puzzling—a possible reunion of the 70s singing group The Osmonds. For some reason, it doesn’t seem like there would be a big demand to reunite Donny and his five brothers, but hey, stranger things have had people tuning in. Donny sang with his brothers during the 70s, then did a little solo work—and now has his 55th album, “Love Songs of the 70s,” on the British charts. Fear not, it will be released soon in America. He also had that variety show with sister Marie (remember “I’m a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock n’ roll”? No?). “The family has been talking,” Osmond said. “I haven’t done a show with my brothers for 25 years or so. We are talking about doing a TV special, and maybe something with Marie, but nothing is locked in yet.” So, it’s not a done deal, but they’re talking. For now, you’ll have to get your dose of Donny when he begins hosting duties for The Great American Dream Vote, beginning on March 27th.

Much More Antonella Barba to Come?

Description American Idol and scandal have been friends for a long time. The second season of the show alone was rife with media stories, from Studdard’s law suits to Abdul’s affair, to one contestant’s cups that ranneth over. Plenty of Idol fans still remember the day Frenchie Davis was unceremoniously booted from the show because of topless photos. After leaving reality TV, Frenchie went on to find Broadway success. But she hasn’t forgotten her brush with TV fame and shame.

A recent article from the Associated Press brought Frenchie back into the television limelight, when the Broadway star stated that she would like to receive a public apology from American Idol. But that’s not all she wants, according to the article. Frenchie stated that she was humiliated by the show, and thinks that an apology would be “a great start.” The reason all of this is surfacing again, four years later? Her name is Antonella Barba, and despite performances that have been routinely called “pitchy” and photos some might think of as “porn,” she keeps hanging around the Idol contestant pool.
