American Idol: Dreams Don’t Die

Carly Smithson Tuesday night’s American Idol featured a trio of interesting contestants and stories that struck a chord, at least with me. Sure, there were more than three contestants vying for a place on the Idol stage, but three of these competitors really stuck out in my mind.

Young Blake Boshnak shares the same dream with his mother: make it through to Hollywood week. After eleven times singing in front of the judges (and eleven rejections), Blake says he’s going to keep chasing the dream and driving to different cities to try out. He may not have the pipes, but he’s got a lot of heart.

Another standout from the Tuesday (San Diego) auditions was sixteen-year-old David Archuleta, a young man who beat partial vocal paralysis to stand before the judges and belt out his best. He did, they loved it, and he’s made it through to Hollywood. Based on early producer comments on Idol’s Season Seven, I believe this young man will be in the Final 24. I also believe he’ll in be in the final few to compete for the next Idol crown.

More Ticket Troubles with Hannah Montana

The concert everyone wanted to see will soon become the movie fans will be forced to miss. Miley Cyrus, star of Hannah Montana and big-selling concert songstress, will soon be on the big screen. The Montana movie comes out February 1, but it’s only scheduled to run for a single week. Tickets have been on sale since December 1, and already fans are treating them like pieces of the true cross. Tickets are selling (and selling out) online and at box offices.

The movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, will feature clips of Miley’s nationwide tour that caused a summer sensation. Meanwhile, Disney has offered no information as to whether the movie will also be released on DVD.

Independent films and other genre films are often released for only one week, and some say such a short release time helps the market from becoming oversaturated. Hannah Montana? Oversaturated? That ship has sailed.

I-Jerry Makes Music Sitting Down

The company also features an i-Pig, an i-Bird, and a basic design that does the same thing, but we have to admit we are partial to the mouse. Visit the i-Mu site and find out there is more to music than sound, it’s a philosophy. Expect an arrival later this year at a $99.00 price.

Orb Docks iPods

There is definitely a surplus of docking stations for iPods. This time it is the mStation 2.1 stereo Orb with dedicated subwoofer and 30 watts of power. At a size of about 8-inches, the device will sync with your iTunes. It has a 10-key IR remote for playlist selection and adjustment for volume, bass, and treble levels. In a choice of 7 colors to match your player, USB and mini-stereo cables are included with the Orb’s $129.95 price.

Last February we told you about iHearSafe Headphones, which protects the hearing of children (or, really, anyone) by limiting audio decibels to 80 or below, regardless of how high the volume is cranked on the device. The headphones are available for $20 USD. By chance we literally ran into iHearSafe inventor and mom, Christine Ingemi, at this year’s CES, getting the word out about her earbuds. CES 2008 Video: Motorola ROKR E8

We saw some fascinating cell phone innovations from Motorola at CES. First was the ROKR E8 phone, with its Modeshift technology. The phone doesn’t have keys. Instead, when turned on, “virtual” keys appear. When pressed you actually feel a vibration, confirming you‘ve pressed the button with a bit of tactile feedback. When you switch the mode to music player, all the cell phone keys vanish and a whole new set of buttons appear, specifically for the player.

Very impressive. Pricing and carriers are not yet available.

Number One ‘American Idol’ Stands Alone

American Idol auditions - Philadelphia Solidifying its reputation as the number one show in the U.S., American Idol’s seventh season premiered last night to a staggering 33.24 million viewers. How did the other networks fare in the face of such stiff competition? Well, if you take all the viewers on all the other networks and add them together, you might get close to the numbers FOX pulled down with just one episode of their reality hit. And it’s not over yet - Idol will return twice a week for the next few months.
