Mother of Five Learns Dangers of American Idol Addiction

American Idol, Alaina WhitakerIt’s hard to pay attention to anything else when Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell are picking at each other on , or when one of the Idol contestants is badly belting out a tune. But for the sake of your children…maybe you should at least get DVR? You’re never gonna believe this one, folks.

Twenty-five year old Sheila Brooks, mother of five, was watching the popular show while her three-year-old daughter almost drowned to death in the family bathtub. That really puts the into perspective, right? Brooks has not been charged with any offense, though the child was taken to the hospital and placed under critical condition.

Amy Winehouse’s Contagious Condition

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music,

Amy WinehouseAlthough it’s been years since I’ve taken my last marketing class, I do believe this was one of the major rules of thumb:

“If you’d like to launch a new cosmetic line, don’t be seen with a skin condition.”

Just last week, we reported that singer was in the process of starting her own clothing and makeup lines.  Now I’m wondering if she should just stick the former.

In recent days, the singer has been spotted with some mysterious lumps on her face.  After some speculated that she had been in a scuffle, Winehouse’s rep has set the record straight:  she has impetigo.  What is impetigo?  Here is the definition supplied by Dictionary.com:

“A contagious skin disease, esp. of children, usually caused by streptococcal bacteria, marked by a superficial pustular eruption, particularly on the face.”

I think I saw the word ‘pus’ in there.

Despite her contagious state, Amy hasn’t stopped doing what she needs to do.  She recently braved the cameras to visit her incarcerated honey, Blake Fielder-Civil.

High School Musical Spawns a Reality Series

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Gossip, News,

High School MusicalHave you ever wondered what it would look like to see young wannabes stab each other in the back for a reality prize?  Well, you may soon have your chance!

Disney - with sister channel ABC - has just now come up with a new way to milk the franchise to death.  Apparently a big screen version of the triquel wasn’t enough; the series has now become the inspiration for a TV reality competition.

After a nationwide hunt for vocal talent, competitors will attend a ‘music conservatory’ to finesse their singing chops.  (I’m guessing this would be equivalent to American Idol‘s Hollywood Week?)  Details beyond that are quite hazy.  Although we should be expecting appearances from HSM stars, what the show’s winner will ultimately receive has not been disclosed.  But really - shouldn’t they all just be happy with bragging rights?

is hoping to get the program produced in time for their target audience’s summer break.

American Idol Welcomes Back Ruben Studdard

Ruben StuddardSometimes it’s nice to get a little help from old friends…

This year, will be welcoming back a familiar name to their Top 12 shows:  .  Although the Season 2 winner won’t necessarily be seen during the twice-weekly broadcasts, he will have a large (no pun intended) presence.

The R&B singer - who hasn’t had much luck lately with his own career - will now be the voice you hear when a sad soul gets their marching papers.  Remember that ubiquitous Daniel Powter song, “Bad Day”?  Now we’ll be struggling to get Studdard’s voice out of our heads.

Producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (probably best known for their work on Janet Jackson’s ‘Control’ album) will be helping to craft Ruben’s farewell song.  The tune will be a cover of Kenny Loggins’ “Celebrate Me Home.”  (Most of you might remember Loggins’ own connection to Idol; he once served as a guest judge during the program’s early audition phase.)

Those interested in purchasing a copy of the new single can do so starting March 12 on iTunes.

Sprint Offers More Than Just Talk for Less

Simply Everything

Sprint has joined some of the other major mobile companies in offering a $99.99 unlimited calling plan. Referred to as “Simply Everything,” it not only includes talk, but gives you Web browsing, Sprint TV and Music, GPS navigation, text, video, and picture messaging, and push-to-talk. Existing customers can switch without a fee charge and newbies can sign up for the rate with a two year contract. While we are in no hurry to run to the company to get in on the hot deal, we hope their competitors will find this a fine time to vie for our dollars.

Blockbuster vs. The Beatles

Beatles HelpI’m pretty sure my local has committed artistic blasphemy.  Allow me to explain:

About a week ago, I was in the mood for something fun and nostalgic, so I swung by Blockbuster to rent a copy of Help!, which, for anyone who doesn’t know, is the second film made.

Now, Blockbuster didn’t carry it, and that doesn’t shock me too much as it’s not one of the more monumental of their films.  But, upon further prying, I discovered that they didn’t have A Hard Day’s Night, Magical Mystery Tour, or Let It Be either.  The very nice girl at the counter did tell me (with a degree of excitement), that they carried , which she thought was just ... awesome.  At this point, I had to quickly excuse myself before I began to do my hostile re-education routine on a complete stranger.

Did American Idol Spill the Elimination Secrets?

American Idol logoThis is really interesting. Since the Top 24 Idols were revealed, American Idol has over-promoted its new deal with iTunes to be sure everyone in the world knows how to get these performances for themselves. But on Wednesday, before the Thursday elimination results were revealed, the Idol page on the iTunes Store was mysteriously missing two singers: Robbie Carrico and Jason Yeager.

All contestant performances are supposed to be available through iTunes, but the mistake goes deeper than a simple error. During the Thursday results show, Robbie and Jason just happened to be the two guys who got the boot. The iTunes error was corrected Thursday, but not before the cat was let out of the proverbial bag.

Want to know who’s leaving, but can’t wait for Thursday shows? Apparently, all you’ve got to do is see who gets kicked off the iTunes page.

Idol Gives Back Celebrity Guests Announced

Idol Gives Back will continue it’s self-serving humanitarian efforts with another star-studded event this year. I gotta tell you, I watched every minute of the charitable broadcast last year and the only thing I was impressed with was Jack Black. During the Thursday elimination show, Ryan Seacrest started to rattle off the big names which will be associated with the big event this year.

As the crowd screamed and Seacrest cheekily grinned, he spit out attention-grabbing names like Brad Pitt, , Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry. He slipped Snoop Dogg in there, too, and that’s when I started screaming. Love the Dogg. Love him. Now, I have a reason to watch the event. Thanks, Snoop.

Believe me, the list of names will only get longer and longer as the Idol Gives Back date of April 9 draws near. They’ll over-promote it the point that we’ll all get sick, and then they’ll do the show and suck a good two hours of TV time out of it. It sounds tedious, I know…but don’t forget, Snoop will be there. He brings a certain cool cachet Idol couldn’t hope to achieve otherwise. Way to luck out, .
