Wear Your Tunes

Reppo II

Imagine earning your B.A. degree just by creating a prototype. That is almost what German designer Joonas Saaranen did by combining music with mobility. His Reppo II is a hardshell backpack that would be great on camping trips, bicycling, and even exercising. Inside are speakers and an amplifier. It took him about 8 months to build and his focus group seemed to think he had a dynamic idea. We do, too and hope he moves it along to reality.

American Idol: First of the Top 12 Sent Packing

Top 12 Idol

Elimination night on began with more cross-promotion. This time, it was Jim Carrey (star of an upcoming 20th Century FOX movie) in a weird elephant suit. During his banter with host Ryan Seacrest, the movie star cried out, “I love the show, I love the contestants.” Me, too…up to a point.

This promotional effort (which is probably totally unnecessary - the movie will bank big bucks whether Carrey parades around in a silly suit or not) was quickly followed by an announcement. “We’re changing the theme!” announced, claiming that an avalanche of telephone calls and e-mails led the show to feature tunes from the Beatles next week as well. I’d like to venture a guess that the tenor of those comments was mostly in the I-didn’t-hear-what-I-wanted-to-hear vein and that next week, we’ll hear much more of the White Album. Just a guess, though.

Next came a quick early Beatles medley of songs, a mishmash of “All My Lovin’,” “I Feel Fine,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Help!” as performed by the . But as soon as the music faded, it was time to get to the real business of the evening: getting rid of one of them.

Rosie O’Donnell Reaches Out to Ousted American Idol Contestant

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, FOX, American Idol, Gossip,

Danny NoriegaJust last Thursday, Danny Noriega (of the great voice and somewhat flamboyant effeminate charm) failed to gather enough votes to keep him on - the door to his TV singing career closed. But on Friday, Rosie O’Donnell opened a window.

In a video blog post created the day after Noriega’s elimination, the former talk show host invited him to join her (and several famous friends) on a cruise. The offer includes a free cruise for him and a friend, which leaves from San Diego this Saturday to sail toward Puerto Vallarta. She’s requested him to sing “Tainted Love” with Cyndi Lauper, who will be allegedly also be on board. O’Donnell called him “bold and brave and beautiful” and ended her entry by imploring him again to join her.

This is a great deal. Free cruise, and he gets to meet Rosie O and Cyndi Lauper. If I were in Danny’s shoes, I would take the trip in a minute. If I were Rosie, I would probably try to use my celebrity status to meet my favorite Idols. But, as I am neither of them, I shall simply report upon these developments as they unfold. So, Danny…you going to take her offer, or what?

American Idol: Twelve Top Performances?

American Idol's Top 12

It’s been hyped for weeks, anticipated since last year’s Idol was crowned, and advertised until TV watchers can hardly stand the promos. Tuesday night it finally arrived - the performances from ‘s Top 12. Was it worth two hours of programming?

The night kicked off with the big debut of a big new stage, where in an odd setup the band is suspended and the judges are shoved behind some of the crowd. Host Ryan Seacrest showed off the new lights and interiors as fans screamed, then dropped the bomb that this performance night would be melodic with songs from the famed Lennon-McCartney songbook. My breath caught, and immediately I was excited. Surely one of the Idols would be bold, brave, brash…surely, one of them would sing something from the darker, more politically-minded years of the Beatles. Surely, we would hear some hot 70s-era vocals.

The Beatles and iTunes - Forever Separate?

iTunesThe legal issues (which boiled down to a trademark dispute) between Apple, Inc. (the computer company) and Apple Corps. (the recording label which supports The Beatles) was solved way back in February of 2007. A year has gone by, and recent rumors suggested that Beatles tunes would at long last be in the iTunes catalogue.

Apple, Inc., however, has called these rumors “unsubstantiated speculation” while Apple Corps is issuing a “no comment” approach. The deal has been in the works for months, with Paul McCartney saying he expected Beatles tunes to become available through Apple, Inc. sometime in early 2008. Well…we’re waiting. What’s the deal here, Apples?

Both sides could be holding out until just the right moment to make the announcement, releasing the tunes when it seems most opportune. Perhaps…during a live broadcast of TV’s most popular show? If you want to know the fate of Beatles tracks on iTunes, might be the series to watch for breaking musical news.

Beatles music not yet on iTunes

Sgt. PeppersUpdate: Turns out, is saying this is an unsubstantiated rumor.

“This is not news nor is it a scoop,” says an Apple Inc. spokesman, declining further comment.

In a USA Today interview, Steve Jobs said that:

It will happen — I hope by the first half of next year. As soon as they’re ready, we’re ready.

The original story:

Get ready to welcome Sgt. Pepper to your iPod. Sir Paul has finally reached an agreement with Apple and the iTunes store. For $400 million, they will receive the Beatles’ back catalog. Proceeds will be divided between McCartney, Ringo Starr, the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, and no doubt will trickle down to Heather Mills. Michael Jackson, EMI, and Sony, who also own part of the Beatles music, will also receive stipends as part of the deal.

The Beatles: Across the iUniverse

The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan ShowThe first invasion of America by the British created a nation. The second British invasion? That created four icons who will never fade from memory or music: . Though the Fab Four were Liverpool-born, their music has literally been played across the universe. One place it’s never been played is iTunes, but at last that’s all about to change.

Apple (the company behind the iMac) and Apple (the record label associated with The Beatles) have finally come to a deal. For a cool $400 million Apple (computers) purchased the rights to feature the tunes. The money will be split between the estates of the group members themselves, the Apple recording label, and (who owns the publishing rights to many Beatles tracks).

Let’s start to pull this together. recently inked a deal with iTunes to display contestant songs. The show then magically managed to get the rights to sing the Lennon-McCartney song book for the first time in seven years, and iTunes suddenly has permission to include Beatles tunes in their listings. What wonders cross-promotion can create.
