Tokyoflash Optical illusion LED watch

Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Wearables, Design, Misc. Tech,

New from Tokyoflash Design Studios is a watch that will test your vision and make you look sophisticated at the same time. It’s so ‘00s to tell someone who struggles to read an analog clock that they can’t tell time, but with this tricky digital watch you can pretty much call anyone out. Hiding in plain sight within a green and black optical illusion, the time can be revealed to the less perceptive eye with the touch of a button. But don’t tell anyone the secret when they ask you for the time in the mall. Who knew that being nice to someone who doesn’t have a watch could be so much fun?

Apple set to finally refresh 30-inch Cinema Display?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Displays, Rumors,

If you’ve been waiting to pick up a new 30-inch Apple Cinema Display, but were waiting until Apple released an LED-backlit version, there may be hope for you yet. Now, we don’t want to get your hopes up too much, but from the looks of things, the 30-inch Cinema Display have been pushed back. Typically, they would ship within 24 hours, but as of today, it is showing a 5-7 business day wait. Historically, when there is a large and sudden shipping delay like that, we’ve seen a product refresh follow soon thereafter. Now that Apple has worked out the 27-inch iMac LED display issues, maybe it’s finally time that the 30-inch display gets update (or replaced with a standalone LED-backlit 27-inch Cinema Display.)

GE Energy Smart LED light bulbs: Pay to save?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smart Home,

Here’s a look at GE’s LED light bulbs, which should be hitting stores sometime in the next year. What makes them special? Well, aside from the fins that you see in the image, these bulbs will last a good 17 years(!) when used for four hours per day, every day. They also distribute the light evenly, in all directions, rather than focused on one area. Most of all, they are super-efficient. The nine watt bulbs give off the same amount of light as a 40 watt incandescent bulb, so you are saving some serious power, and only replacing them two or three times in a lifetime. The downside? They’ll cost somewhere between $40-50 each. Yeah, that’s pricey for a light bulb, but did you think the future would be cheap?

Fletch Creations Combo-sensing Super-Tips LED Inserts

Posted by Finnian Durkan Categories: Accessories, Design, Mods / Hacks,
While scrolling through tech websites earlier today I came across something pretty cool: a website called Fletch Creations. Fletch Creations is producing Combo-Sensing LED inserts for Super-Tips pens. For the uninitiated, Pen Spinning (or ‘pen mawashi’ in Japan where the pastime has been popular since the 1970’s) is a form of contact juggling involving the deft manipulation/spinning of a pen in various combinations.
What Fletch Creations has done is to create a neat little LED insert that fits into Super-Tips pens—the pens preferred in most Pen Spinning circles—that has 3 lights that can be lit up in succession increasingly complex patterns depending upon the speed and combinations that the spinner is able to achieve. Whereas I struggle to get more than one blinking LED to light up, highlighting my Lobster Boy-like manual dexterity, my high-school friend Chris is able to produce a better light-show than Timothy Leary ever saw on one of his best hallucinogen benders. Needless to say the color combos he was able to achieve were pretty impressive and emphasized the extent to which you can take pen spinning. Fletch Creations has come up with an original idea that can add enjoyment to an already entertaining medium. It may also allow me to appear a lot hipper when conversing with my Vampire Weekend-listening teenage relatives. “So, you kids dig this internets thing right? I really enjoy that Friendster…” Well, there may be no helping me but anyone else should see a definite up-tick in their street-cred. Check ‘em out.

Sony Bravia ZX5: LED-backlit, slim LCD HDTV

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Displays, HDTV, Wireless / WiFi,

We know that Sony is busy prepping their 3D strategy, but in the meantime, they are still working on pumping out some awesome televisions with the ZX5 series of Bravia LCD televisions. The Sony Bravia ZX5 sports edge-mounted LED backlighting (no local-dimming Triluminous tech here - boo), 240Hz Motion Flow, a wireless HD media receiver, and a 16.6-mm frame. The set will hit stores in Japan in November, and I’m sure we’ll hear about the US launch at CEDIA.

BenQ Goes Green with LED-backlit V2400 and V220 Eco

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, Displays, Peripherals,

It’s good to know that major electronics makers have realized that it makes more sense to “go green” than to avoid it. BenQ, for example, has recently created two new V Series monitors that are meant to be eco-friendly. The 24-inch V2400 Eco and 21.5-inch V2200 Eco have dynamic contrast ratios of 5,000,000:1, and are LED-backlit 1080p panels. The monitors are made from 28 percent recycled plastic. They also reduce power by 30 percent in eco mode, and 36 percent overall. These displays are available in China in a week, but we expect them to arrive stateside soon enough.

Modula therapy lamp changes colors via Bluetooth

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Misc. Tech, Wireless / WiFi,

Okay, we get it, watching colors change on a lamp is supposed to be therapeutic, but aren’t these soothing treatments supposed to get us away from our technology-overtaken lives? Modula doesn’t seem to think so, as their therapy lamp allows you to manually change the colors with a Bluetooth-enabled, device like a mobile phone. Yeah, I don’t know exactly how it works either, but if you want to find out for yourself, feel free to lay down $281 for it. It might be more expensive than a relaxing fish tank, but at least it will have less maintenance.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj with built-in LED projector

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Cameras, Corporate News, Handhelds, Portable Audio / Video,

Over the past couple of days, the Internets have been going crazy with rumors that Nikon was coming out with a camera that included a projector, and the device has finally come to fruition. The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the first camera to ship with an LED-powered projector that can make a 40-inch image for slideshows with music, effects, and even transitions. The camera also includes a 12.1 megapixel sensor, ISO 6400 sensitivity, and a 5x wide-angle Zoom-Nikkor lens with five-way VR stabilization. No release date has been announced, but we expect it very soon at the price of $430 for the US, and $699 in Australia.
