iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak available with redsn0w 0.9.6b4

If you're waiting for a jailbreak before updating to iOS 4.2.1, you might be happy to know that redsn0w 0.9.6b4 will do the trick. It uses the Limera1n exploit that worked with iOS 4.1, however this is currently a "tethered" jailbreak. In other words, once you jailbreak using the current method, if you ever need to reboot your iPad, fourth-gen and third-gen iPod touch, iPhone 3GS (later models) or iPhone 4, you must have the device connected to your computer and use redsn0w to do the reboot, otherwise the phone simply won't boot up. Definitely not something we'd feel comfortable doing with our main device, but hey, we know there are many out there who are more daring than we are. Google Docs now editable on iOS and select Android devices

Google Docs has been available on mobile devices for several months now, but there was no way to edit Google Docs documents on the go while in the browser. Now, Google has announced that over the coming days they will push a new version of the mobile service on their servers, and suddenly all your docs will be editable on the go from some Android devices, and iOS devices running version 3.0 or higher. When opening a document, you will be able to turn edit mode on, and add text, bullet points, edit spreadsheets and so on. Changes will be shown in "near realtime" on the web, and changes that other people do to shared documents will be reflected on the mobile device as well. This should be very good news for everyone who've come to depend on Google Docs for productivity.

Netflix coming to “select” Android devices next year

Netflix posted an interesting blog entry this weekend on which they went behind the scenes as to why there isn't an Android Netflix app just yet. Apparently, it has to do with the fact that Android devices are fragmented, and there isn't a single DRM system across the board, unlike the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 (which both have a Netflix app.) This means that, according to the blog, it's much harder to ensure security of the video content provided by Netflix, which is something that's required by publishers. Still, they are working on it, and now say that they will be able to release an Android app for "select" devices early next year. While there is no mention of which ones, more updates are said to be upcoming.

Skyfire brings Flash video to the iPhone

The Skyfire browser is now fully available in the App Store, and promises to bring Flash video to the iPhone. The browser actually has a server side component which converts any Flash video on the fly before sending it on to your device, which allows it to display Flash videos converted to a format the Apple device understands. However, it seems that the company underestimated the demand for Flash videos from iOS users, since mere hours after the app went live, it was pulled from the App Store. It seems those troubles have disappeared though, and in use the app performs quite nicely. If you're looking for a way to view Flash video across the Internet in your browser, check out the Skyfire browser for iPhone, available for $2.99.

30 reasons to jailbreak your iPhone

So, you've heard all about this iPhone jailbreak stuff, but haven't ever taken the plunge? The folks over at ReadWriteWeb have put together 30 reasons why you might wanna consider it. While the team "jailbreak" might sound a bit scary, what you are basically doing by jailbreaking your device is enabling the ability to install apps that aren't in the App Store because Apple wouldn't accept them for one reason or another. In the video above, for example, you get a look at FolderEnhancer, a tweak that allows you to put as many apps into a folder as you'd like, swipe between pages in a folder, and even put folders inside of other folders.
Another of our personal favorites, BiteSMS, makes the list as well, and it's basically SMS the way Apple should have implemented it in the first place. You can reply directly from the notification, send an SMS from anywhere (without having to go into the actual Messaging app,) and much more. There are other tweaks that enable things like FaceTime over 3G (removing the Wi-Fi-only restriction,) and the fantastic SBSettings, which gives you access to toggle a bunch of buried iPhone features off and on from anywhere.

Limera1n iOS 4.1 jailbreak now available for Mac

Limera1n, the first jailbreak tool compatible with iOS 4.1 is now available for the Mac. When first released five days ago, it was Windows-only, and wouldn't even work inside of a virtual machine. Now Mac owners can get in on the action. Limera1n works with all iOS devices.

iPad coming to Verizon and ATT on October 28

Not to be outdone by Amazon, Target, and Walmart selling the iPad, Verizon Wireless and AT&T brick-and-mortar locations will begin selling the Apple tablet beginning October 28. This marks the first time that Verizon is carrying an iOS device to date, and likely fuels speculation that the iPhone is coming to VZW in early 2011. They'll be bundling the iPads with their MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, with pricing set at $630, $730, and $830 for the 16, 32, and 64GB models respectively. Users will get 1GB of monthly data allowance for $20, contract-free. On the AT&T side of things, they'll be selling the WiFi + 3G model of the iPad, which connects to the AT&T 3G network, and users there will pay $15 for 200MB of data, or $25 for 2GB monthly, no contracts.
