iPhone 4 has orientation issues, not that there’s anything wrong with that

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cameras, Smartphones, Handhelds,

Looks like we found another iPhone 4 oddity. It looks like taking and sharing pictures with the iPhone 4 may have a couple of bumps in the road. The iPhone 4 uses scantily-supported JPEG orientation flags for photos rather than actually rotating the pixel data, causing many online services (Dailybooth and Facebook included) to interpret portrait-oriented photos as landscape and then turning them on their side. As you can see above, I took a self-portrait and sent it in to Dailybooth, and it appeared as a landscape image.

We give you a look at the iPhone 4 as we open it up at the Alderwood Mall Apple Store in Lynnwood, Washington. We give you a look at the phone, compare it to the iPhone 3GS, and give you a look at the iPhone 4 dock and iPhone 4 bumper case as well.
Is your iPhone 4 defective?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Features,
As with any new major product launch, the iPhone 4 isn’t without some manufacturing issues. Some users are reporting that their signal will drop if they touch the antenna on the lower left, other are reporting yellow spotting on the display, and some others are saying that their volume buttons are inverted. So, we wanna hear from you—is your iPhone 4 acting up in any way, or is your unit awesome?
How to enable and disable FaceTime on the iPhone 4

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds,

FaceTime is one of the major new iPhone 4 features that set the smartphone apart from others, but we’ve been hearing that quite a few people are unable to place a FaceTime call from their iPhone 4, despite both parties being connected to Wi-Fi, which is the only requirement. In fact, we had the same issue when we tried to fire up our first FaceTime chat while at the Apple Store during iPhone 4 launch. I immediately walked over the to Genius Bar, figuring that my iPhone 4 wasn’t recognizing the fact that it had a front-camera or something, and the Genius was stumped, too. He was also in charge of handing out iPhone 4 units, so we didn’t have his full attention anyway. While he was doing his thing, we looked through the Settings area to see if there might be something there. As it turns out, there was.
For whatever reason, not all iPhone 4s are shipping with FaceTime enabled. The person I was with had just bought his iPhone 4, same as I did, and his had FaceTime enabled by default, while mine was disabled by default—both straight out of the box. If you are experiencing the same, first thing you should do is go into Settings, then Phone. Right beneath your phone number will be the FaceTime toggle. Switch it to “ON” and you are good to go.

Apple says white iPhone 4 not available until second half of July

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds,

It’s the eve before the official launch of the iPhone 4, despite some buyers getting theirs early, and we were still left wondering what exactly happened to the white iPhone 4—until now. Apple has finally ponied up with some info, letting us know that the reason for the delay is simply that the white model is “more challenging to manufacture than expected.” If you wanna get one of the white models, you’ll have to wait until the second half of July, which is when Apple expects to have everything sorted out. You can read their official statement below:
Statement by Apple on White iPhone 4
White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.
So, you gonna wait?
iPhone 4 unboxing set to music

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds,
As we let you know earlier, a bunch of people are getting their iPhone 4 delivered early, two days before the actual launch of the smartphone. As such, we are now seeing a bunch of unboxing videos hitting YouTube already. We will have our professional unboxing up early on the 24th, but in the meantime, check out the one above that is simply set to music to create…some…sort of mood. To everyone who received their shipments a day or two early, congrats, and we hate you.
iPhone 4 deliveries start two days ahead of schedule

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds,

Well, look what we have here—it turns out that this year Apple has decided not to have FedEx hold on to deliveries of the iPhone 4 until release day (they did this with the iPhone 3G and 3GS,) and is instead letting deliveries happen naturally. The result? Some lucky folks are reporting that they’ve received their iPhone 4 today, two days before they go on sale at Apple retails stores and other third-party locations. Others have a delivery date set for tomorrow, giving them a one-day head start on all that FaceTime goodness.
So, what about all of the others who opted to reserve at a store and wait in line? Looks like it’s gonna remain that way. We must say, though, it’s kind of a low blow by Apple. The fact is that just about everyone who reserved and will be waiting in line for hours at an Apple Store to pick up the iPhone 4 opted to do so in order to be one of the first to have the device. Seriously, they aren’t there because they need help importing their contacts or installing apps. Now that iPhone 4 units are being delivered, it would have been cool of Apple to start sending emails to those who reserved, letting them come in and pick up their iPhone 4 starting today, saving those customers from lining up in the wee hours of the morning.
