Garmin nuvi GPS System - Super Simple

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: GPS, Product Reviews,

Garmin nüviLooking for a last minute gift for Dad’s day? I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi GPS unit for a friend who is navigationally and electronically challenged. These things are so easy to set up that my friend got the hang of it in less than 10 minutes. We went out to dinner and because the restaurant we wanted to visit had gone belly up (no pun intended,) we asked it to find us another. It took about 4 seconds to find one with similar cuisine in the same area.

The positives? Easy learning curve, touchscreen, low cost for smaller models (less than $150.00) and step by step oral instructions. The negatives? Go your own way and the sometimes annoying female voice will chastise you. And occasionally the unit refuses to stick to your windshield. Good thing it’s portable.

GAO Finds Issues With GPS Satellites

GPS Globe

The U.S. Government Accountability Office recently issued a report that claims that unless the Air Force puts up new GPS III satellites by 2010, older ones may stop working and service may fail. As of now there are 31 in orbit and although we only need 24 for positioning, the AF seems to have fallen behind in their maintenance. No need to fear yet, as the AF promises the new system will be up and running and may increase the signal by as much as 10 times the present rate.

SpotLight GPSWe are always so concerned with keeping our families intact that we sometimes forget about our pets. The SpotLight GPS Pet Locator has 27/7/365 recovery service through the AKC CAR (American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery.) If Spot or Puff wanders too far, you will receive an email or cell phone message. A rescue button is on the collar to help you find your furry friend. We were thinking that they should have put one on the little girl in the picture as well. Look for the SpotLight later this month.

Navigon - No More PNDs in No. America

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, GPS,

Navigon 7200TGermany based Navigon is leaving the PND market in North America. CEO Egon Minar says that they are downsizing their Chicago office but will still take care of their existing customers with map updates, etc. Apparently they were losing money to more basic, cheaper GPS devices. Instead, they will concentrate on its mobile division by offering its technology to smartphones. They recently signed a deal to equip T-Mobile in Germany, so perhaps they will extend themselves to the states.
