iPhone 2.2 update now available: Google Street View, Podcast downloading

Well, I guess that November 21 rumor was true, because the iPhone 2.2 firmware update is now available. This one is pretty hefty in the feature department too, so color us excited. You’ve got the a few nice enhancements to Maps, including Google Street View, public transit directions, walking directions, and the ability to share your GPS location with others via email. Speaking of email, the Mail client enjoys some stability improvements in this release as well, along with better handling of wide HTML email. Safari picks up performance improvements, we get the promise of fewer set-up failures and call drops, and better sound quality for Visual Voicemail.
If you’re a podcast lover (and seriously, we know that you love our shows,) you’ll be ecstatic to hear that, finally, podcasts are available for download in the iTunes application. Seriously, this thing is packed. Connect your iPhone up to your computer and grab the 246MB update now.

The AT&T Insite has 3G speed, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0, Windows Media Mobile Player 10 and a full color 3-inch LCD display that auto-rotates. Add to that streaming radio capability, Mobile Microsoft Office editing, Video ShareSM and both a QWERTY keyboard and 20-key version. With a price of $499.99, knock it down with a 2 year contract, a mail in rebate and the Insite is yours for $199.99.

Navigon 8100T PND With Panorama View 3D

Motorola may not be able to compete with Navigon’s latest PND. The 8100T has a very impressive Panorama View 3D. The system is created out of NASA terrain data with digital elevations. The GPS device has a 4.8-inch touchscreen, a built-in graphics accelerator, r/t traffic, voice address entry, Bluetooth and text-to-speech. The high end 8100T also features Zagat ratings and reviews for some locations and has a MSRP of $599.00. Look for it later this month.

Motorola MOTONAV GPS System

Motorola seems to be breaking out of their cell phone niche with their new MOTONAV. The TN20 has text to speech with turn-by-turn directions as well as lane guidance. With an anti-glare 3.5 touchscreen you can look for over a million points of interest with pre-loaded maps of the Continental U.S. in either 2D or 3D. The TN20 is 3.7 x 3.2 x 0.7-inches at a weight of 5 oz., can go for 2.5 hours before needing a recharge and comes at a price of $299.99. For another $100.00, Motorola is offering their MOTONAV TN30 that includes a cell phone with Bluetooth capability, which makes them not quite all the way out of that niche.

Fujitsu Introduces Lifebook P1630 and U820 Tablets for Small People with Even Smaller Fingers

If you’re trying to decide whether to put a GPS or mini notebook on your holiday wish list, you’re in luck. Fujitsu announced two new mini notebooks today, the 8.9 inch Lifebook P1630 and the “I can just about fit it in my pocket” 5.6 inch U820. Both come with super-sharp WSXGA touchscreens and offer full Windows functionality, but the 1.3-pound, itsy-bitsy U820 includes a 1.6GHz Atom processor, integrated GPS, and comes preloaded with Garmin Mobile PC, effectively turning it into a high-end nüvi with the added ability of being able to navigate directly to your Outlook contacts. The U820 comes with a starting price of $1,049.
If you don’t want or need the navigation feature (and have adult-sized fingers), the P1630 includes a 1.20 GHz Core 2 Duo, built-in accelerometer, 64GB SSD option and a piggy-bank-raiding base price of $2,179.

First iPhones get the handy Google Earth, now go one step further. Suppose you are taking a trip by train, bus, or subway, and it is such a long trek that you can’t stay awake. With the maps and GPS, insert the address, city, or station that you are going to and take that power nap. An alarm will go off when you reach your destination. Dell Pharos-Branded Traveller Smartphones

When something like this comes out we just have to share. Rumor has it that Dell has gotten together with Pharos in an effort to jump on the smartphone bandwagon with the Traveller 117 and 127. Each has Windows Mobile 6.1, QWERTY keyboard and 7.2 Mbps HSDA support. They also have VGA video call capability, a 2 megapixel cam, and four hours of talk time and 200 standby. While the Travellers may have some awesome GPS capability, we don’t think Apple or RIM have too much to worry about.

Garmin nüvi 785T With Lane Assist

It may not have speech recognition like the nüvi 880 GPS, but the new Garmin nüvi 785T does tell you which lane you should be in (and includes a mute button) so you don’t have to take along that annoying third cousin. Garmin’s lane assist technology guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate; realistically displaying road signs and junctions on your route. For hands-free calling, the unit also includes A2DP Bluetooth wireless technology, with a built in microphone and touchscreen keypad.
The 785T also offers real-time traffic info, news, stocks, current events and more via MSN Direct with the first three months provided for free, after which you’ll have to subscribe for about $50/year if you want to continue using the service.

Reigncom iriver NV mini PND

Reigncom has unveiled their iriver NV mini in Korea. The 4GB PND features a 3.5-inch screen with 320 x 240 resolution, houses Gini map software, has video and audio playback and a photo viewer for times when you are no longer lost. The NV should have about 2 1/2 hours of battery life and supports an external memory of up to 8GB. Displayed at the IFA 2008, the navigational device comes with a MSRP of 188,000 KRW (~$128.00.)
