In case you have recently been shopping for the navigationally challenged in your life, Navigon’s 2000S is the company’s new entry level GPS device with plenty of features. It has text-to-speech, Lane Assist and Reality View Pros, DirectHelp, and a handy speed limit display. With a 3.5” screen, the satnav comes without 3-D landmarks and voice command which is on their higher priced 7200T. The Navigator will be available for $199.99 this holiday season.

Sony is releasing 4 nav-u PNDs. The NV-U94T is top of the line with a photo viewer that, when a Memory Stick is put into its slot, can display images. With stereo Bluetooth and audio/video player, it lists for $399.99. The mid-sized NV-U84T with a 4.8-inch screen and NV-U74T (4.3-in frame) carry a price of $349.99 each. The compact NV-U44T has a 3.5-inch frame and is a more affordable $249.99. All 4 satellite signal receiving GPS devices feature gesture command with one touch and Position Plus hardware to help prevent false positions.

Verizon Blitz It’s about time that QWERTY keyboard cell phones started becoming affordable. Verizon has introduced the Blitz, a landscape oriented slider phone with a 2.2-in display with 220x176 pixel resolution. It also features a 1.3 mp camera and microSD slot. It has Bluetooth 2.0 capability with A2DP for stereo headsets, and of course it has VZ navigator and can receive V CAST Music with a Rhapsody subscription. You can get the electric blue Blitz now for $69.99 online with a 2 year subscription.

Alpine Electronics PND-K3 GPS

PND-K3 GPS Alpine Electronics usually creates automobile audio/video gadgets and speakers, and now they are going further into GPS territory with their PND-K3. It features an updated interface from their BlackBird II, text-to-speech ability, integrated Bluetooth, and comes preloaded with Navteq maps of the U.S. and Canada with about 6 million points of interest. It has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, an SD expansion slot, customizable map and menu colors, and carries an MSRP of ~$550.00.

IFR Aspid Unidrive

IFR (a company created by Spain’s motorsport engineer Ignacio Fernández Rodriquez) has designed the Unidrive. The gadget features a touchscreen to monitor and alter power output, ABS, brake balance, traction, and more. The units for driver and co-driver also have GPS, GPRS/GSM, accelerometers, and WiFi and Ethernet capability. In order to display the technology to the fullest extent, he and his team are installing them in Aspids (Spanish for asp.) Obviously the company is going after high end customers as each Aspid is built to suit the driver and will cost about £75,000 ($148,000.)

Apple beta testing iPhone 2.1 firmware, adding more GPS features

We just got word that Apple has released a beta version of iPhone OS 2.1 to developers. Along with the 2.1 firmware, a new version of the iPhone SDK has been seeded as well, but the new SDK can’t be used for submitting applications to the App Store at the moment.

A few new things we are seeing in this version of the software is the addition of a bunch of Core Location features that track the direction you are heading, and the speed you are traveling. Looks like we might see a turn-by-turn GPS app after all on the iPhone 3G.

Jaty Electronics JTNV-DR7200 GPS Unit

Korea’s Jaty Electronics has released their JTNV-DR7200 GPS with a Sirf3 antenna and is powered by 533MHZ CPU. In addition to being useful in a car or golf cart, it also has a mobile phone charger, an MP3 player, video playback, picture display, and is e-book capable. Available for KRW 296,000 (~$292.00,) if you use it on the 19th hole at your golf course, you can take advantage of its clever drunkometer function to see if you should be driving home.
