Box Office Breakdown: The Rock Upsets The Heartbreak Kid
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks, Disney, Lionsgate, New Line, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Action, Drama, Family, Period, Romance, Science Fiction, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,
Despite what you may have learned in school, Ben Stiller + The Farrelly Brothers does not necessarily equal box office gold.
The team behind There’s Something About Mary took a backseat to last weekend’s winner: The Game Plan. The Heartbreak Kid, a remake of the 1972 Neil Simon comedy, raked in only $14 million. While Mary did open with a smaller gross back in 1998 ($13.7M), it’s doubtful this critically-panned movie will become another sleeper hit for the trio. Thankfully co-star Michelle Monaghan will have the upcoming Gone Baby Gone to wash this disappointment away.
The only other new entries into the Top 10 included the fantasy flick, The Seeker ($3.7M), and the J.Lo-produced dance film, Feel the Noise ($3.1M). Meanwhile, the well-reviewed Michael Clayton pulled impressive numbers in limited release ($46,000 per screen). Expect the George Clooney vehicle to open wide this weekend.

Box Office Breakdown: The Game Plan Scores the Win
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Lionsgate, New Line, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Drama, Horror, Independent, Musicals, Political, Romance, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,
The execs at Disney must be loving themselves this week. Not only are are they attached to one of hottest concert tours of the year, they have just taken a surprise win at the box office. Although many had predicted good things for the terrorism thriller, The Kingdom, a simple father/daughter bonding film moved theatergoers this weekend.
At $22.9 million, The Game Plan took in almost $6 million more than the Jamie Foxx/Jennifer Garner vehicle. The movie about a football player who meets the daughter he never knew he had (how exactly is that a Disney storyline?) gave “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson his second best opening (behind 2002’s The Scorpion King).
Meanwhile, Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe made its first entry into the Top 10. After several weeks in limited release, the musical—which uses 33 Beatles songs to tell its story—will expand into more theaters come October 12th.

‘Hannah Montana’ Tour Outselling The Police, Springsteen
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Cable,
It’s not uncommon for a Disney movie to outperform its competition—so should we be surprised that the hottest concert tour this year is being headlined by a Disney Channel star?
The Hannah Montana (a.k.a. Miley Cyrus) tour is so successful, scalpers are already selling her concert tickets at five times the face value. Seats for all 54 stops have already sold out—and in several cases, in near record fashion. (It took only four minutes in the Atlanta-area and eight minutes in Memphis.) According the Associated Press, her tour is outselling The Police, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.
Okay, the Spice Girls did just sell out their London concert in only 38 seconds—but let’s remember: Hannah/Miley’s only 14.

Singer George Michael To Appear on ABC Show
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, ABC,
Almost 10 years after his infamous public bathroom arrest, George Michael will once again be appearing on American television sets—but this time, he won’t be the subject of a news report. The singer is scheduled to appear in ABC’s mid-season drama, Eli Stone.
Stone stars Jonny Lee Miller (a.k.a. Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband #1) as a man who suffers hallucinations and believes he might be a prophet. (Seeing visions of George Michael singing ‘Faith’ will do that to a guy.) Although Michael was originally scheduled to be in the pilot only, the producers have since asked him to sing and act in two more episodes.
Interestingly enough, George told the BBC recently that he has been unsuccessful in giving up his marijuana habit. I wonder what ABC’s parent company (Disney) will think about that news…

Are Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens Over?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Cable, Gossip, Rumors,
It almost sounds scripted, doesn’t it? Two relatively unknown actors get cast in the leading roles for a Disney TV movie. Wonder of wonders, the movie becomes one of Disney’s biggest hits, spawning a best-selling album, huge ratings, and sequels. For the High School Musical fans out there, it was just the icing on the cake that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens took their on-screen love to a real-life relationship. But now, OK! Magazine says it’s all over - Efron ended the relationship at least a week ago. Friends of the stars, however, say they don’t think it’s all really finished for the budding young couple.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Narnia Film Delayed
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Adaptation, Adventure, Family, Sequels, Upcoming Releases,
Production has been delayed on the third Narnia movie installment The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Originally scheduled to hit theatres May 1, 2009, the movie now won’t be released until May 7, 2010. Production was supposed to begin this January, but has now been pushed to next summer. The delay has been attributed to the young stars of the film, as execs are saying it’s very challenging to work out scheduling difficulties. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the second flick in the franchise, was supposed to be released this December. It won’t be out until May.

Recap of Vanessa Hudgens Nude Photo Fiasco
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Cable, Talent, Gossip,
Vanessa Hudgens has been getting her fair share (or even more) of media attention lately. That’s what happens when naked photos get “leaked” to the Internet. Something similar worked for Paris Hilton and American Idol’s Antonella Barba (who stole the spotlight not for her singing, but for her photos). Because the photos haven’t hurt, but helped, Hudgens, some of the media is saying it might have all been some sort of master plan instigated by the young star. Disney is trying to reduce press by ordering stars of the High School Musical franchise not to talk to reporters about Hudgens, as Kaycee Stroh refused to comment to reporters at an Emmy party. Gossip says that Hudgens and on- and off-screen boyfriend Zac Efron might not be eager to take part in High School Musical 3 as it is, though Disney has made no announcements about Hudgens in the movie either way. Hudgens is currently being sued by her own lawyer for unpaid attorney fees.

Vanessa Hudgens Lawsuit Trouble
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Kids, Music, Talk Shows, Cable, Gossip, Rumors,
Already wondering if she’ll be cashing another paycheck from Disney, Vanessa Hudgens is now facing a different financial matter. According to TMZ, the High School Musical star is reportedly delinquent in paying her attorney’s legal fees. Of the $5 million he’s apparently helped her secure, lawyer Brad Schall claims he is still owed $150,000. One sold photo could take care of all that.
On a side note—our latest girl done wrong has provided my favorite ‘Quote of the Week’ thus far. During an interview on The Tyra Banks Show yesterday (something taped before her scandal), Vanessa said: “I’m very low-key. I keep my personal life to myself.”
No further comment needed.
