Is Network TV Avoiding Gay Issues?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: ABC, Cable, CBS, NBC, Desperate Housewives, The Office, Gossip,
A new report shows that seven stories on the five broadcast networks currently feature lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters this fall season. Last season, there were nine. According to a study by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the number has been steadily dropping for the past three years. Caitlin Down (played by Bonnie Somerville) on ABC’s Cashmere Mafia, which won’t even premiere until December, is the only non-heterosexual regular character to appear on a new show this year. According to the study, ABC features more non-heterosexual characters than any other broadcast network. Shows like Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and the new Cashmere Mafia all feature non-heterosexual characters. NBC’s The Office features one character to fit the gay and lesbian mold. The report shows that, currently, CBS and the CW have no non-heterosexual characters on any of their shows, but CBS does include gay and lesbian contestants on their reality shows. In sharp contrast, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender representation on cable is going through the roof, with 57 characters this year alone.

What Went Wrong with Britney’s VMA Performance?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Award Shows, Music, Reality, Cable, MTV, Talent, Gossip, Rumors,
If you’ve somehow missed the disparaging comments about Britney Spears on stage at the VMAs, you’re a better person than me – because I’ve found it’s totally unavoidable. The first day, the comments centered on Brit’s off-beat performance, her lethargic dance moves, and her completely lackluster stage presence. The second day, the news was filled with remarks about Brit’s body. The songstress has never been afraid to show off what she’s got, but critics are saying the mother of two should be covering it up instead. Video of Brit’s performance is absolutely everywhere for those that missed the MTV broadcast, and for those who just want to have a good laugh a second time around. Several reporters claim to have “the real story” behind the big B-bomb that landed on stage during award night. But does anyone, other than Spears herself, really know what went wrong?

‘Top Chef’ Star Victim of Anti-Gay Violence
The Labor Day Weekend was unfortunately not a festive one for a former Top Chef contestant. Josie Smith-Malave, the 4th person eliminated last season, claims that she and several of her friends were victims of an anti-gay assault after a birthday celebration earlier this month.
The gals had been partying at Partners Bar in Sea Cliff, NY but were asked to leave when two of the ladies starting ‘dancing together’. (Seriously…‘Partners’ isn’t the name of a gay bar?) As they headed out, a large group followed them outside. From there, the suspects reportedly spat, hurled homophobic insults, threw garbage and started beating on the women. Josie, who is openly gay, says her straight sister was one of the victims. Although the ladies were bruised up, no serious injuries were reported.
Police were called to the scene and are still investigating the incident. Although a few of the accused assailants were still present when officers arrived, no arrests have yet been made.
The current season of Top Chef can still be seen on Wednesdays @ 10pm on Bravo.
UPDATE: Police have since arrested one person related to this incident. Matthew Walli, 20, has been charged with ‘second-degree robbery as a bias crime’ (he had stolen Smith-Malave’s camera). More arrests may still come.

Did Vanessa Hudgens Send Photos to Drake Bell?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Cable/Satellite, Gossip,

An inside source is now telling People magazine that Vanessa Hudgens’ photo session links way back to another teen idol: Drake Bell, star of Nickelodeon‘s Drake & Josh.
Prior to her current stardom, Hudgens reportedly snapped and emailed several racy photos of herself to the actor. While it’s unclear if the two ever dated in real-life, she did appear in a 2006 episode of his show as his girlfriend. (Of course we all know by now that she is currently dating her High School Musical co-star, Zac Efron).
Bell’s rep claims that Drake never received those photos…though I’m sure he has by now.

HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me: In Love With Controversy?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, HBO, Gossip,
With HBO’s gritty new drama, Tell Me You Love Me, the dramatic message is supposed to be about feeling. But the new series is telling me something different – HBO isn’t trying to create good drama…it’s a cable network trying to create good hype. In this business, hype is generally all you need. The series is scheduled to premiere Sunday at 9 pm ET, and early reports expound on the graphic sex scenes that strongly pepper the first episode. The show is really about relationships (isn’t everything) and relies on character interaction of all sorts – not just sexual action. Viewers will delve deeply into the lives of 20-something chef Jamie (played by Michelle Borth), who is engaged to Hugo (a very likely-sounding name attached to the character portrayed by Luke Kirby). Carolyn, a lawyer in his mid-30s that’s played by Sonya Walger, and her real-estate investor husband Palek (Adam Scott) will struggle with keeping their marriage alive as they (unsuccessfully) continue to attempt pregnancy. Ally Walker plays 40-something stay-at-home mom Katie, who no longer has sex with her husband Dave (Tim DeKay). These relationships revolve around the offices of Dr. May Foster (Jane Alexander), a couples therapist in her 60s who still enjoys great sex. (Here’s hoping HBO doesn’t get too showy with those scenes, right?) Despite the sort of boring plot (a therapist’s office…how original for HBO) and obvious attempt to target several demographics at once, some critics are lavishing early praise on the ambitious HBO drama.

Scott Baio is 45… and Renewed
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Renewals,
Have any of you been watching Scott Baio is 45… and Single? Talk about guilty pleasure. Baio, whose career has been in the dumps for quite awhile, has carved himself a nice little comeback with this reality show gem. Alright, maybe “gem” is too generous, but it’s been a fun ride nevertheless. And with the summer winding down, it was a nice little diversion—especially if you grew up loving Chachi. Which I did. Charles in Charge? Not so much… I had moved on from Scott Baio at that point. Anyway, the VH1 series chronicled his two months with a life coach to get him on the marriage track so he doesn’t die a lonely old Casanova. Did it work? As many suspected, Baio was ready to marry his girlfriend by the end of the series, which aired on Sunday… what no one guessed was that his girlfriend would whisper to him that she was pregnant in the final seconds of the finale. Here’s what many did predict—a second season of the popular series that would involve wedding planning (and now, impending daddyhood). And you thought Baio was afraid of getting married? How phobic is he going to be about having a kid? Stay tuned for next season, which begins production in the fall and will air nine episodes. How did the show do with viewers? Seems people (besides me) are still interested in Chachi—it averaged 1.3 million viewers.

Hulk Hogan’s Son In Serious Accident
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Reality, Cable, News,
Nick Bollea (aka Nick Hogan) was involved a serious car accident Sunday afternoon in Clearwater, Florida. Police report that Nick was driving a Toyota Supra that for some reason lost control and crashed into a median. Both Bollea and a passenger had to be extricated from the damaged vehicle. They were later airlifted to the hospital in ‘extremely serious’ conditions. Although the accident is still being investigated, police say it’s obvious the Supra had been traveling at a high rate of speed. Nick’s father, wrestler Hulk Hogan, was notified of the incident and arrived at the scene.
Nick, Hulk and the rest of the family can still be seen on their VH1 reality show Hogan Knows Best.
You can see the video of the crash scene via the link below:

‘High School Musical’ Dancing Special
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Specials, Cable,
I’m going to take a wild guess and say that most of the die-hard fans of High School Musical 2 have already seen the film a thousand times thanks to their DVR. So every line, lyric and nuance have been dissected at this point.
But for those who just can’t get enough, The Disney Channel will be airing a dance-along version of the movie next month. So if you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out some of those choreographed 8-counts, Zac Efron (along with the other cast members) will be on hand to help provide instruction for several of the musical’s numbers.
Be sure to set your Tivo now for September 8th.
