True Crime: Streets of NY

Activision has announced that the sequel to the popular game “True Crime: Streets of LA” is to be followed up in the Big Apple. As a matter of fact, they claim that the streets of Manhattan will be more accurate than any game ever made. To add to the realism, they will even program more Asians in Chinatown, tourists in Times Square, and more. As a resident of New York City, I hope they don’t forget to put street entertainers and people handing out flyers on busy streets. What they can leave out: rush hour traffic.

For the longest time I carried an HP 4355 Pocket PC with me everywhere. I used it like the worlds smartest wallet - I had a leather case for it with a space for credit cards, ID, a spare housekey - the works. Not only could I check my email and browse the web, but I could pay for dinner and get into bars all in one not-so-svelt package. Now a company called iPocket has brought that concept to the iPod with a stick on pouch designed to carry ID, Credit cards, or keys with your iPod. The iPocket also has the bonus feature of helping to protect the back of your iPod from scratches. At $3.99 for a full sized iPocket, and $2.99 for an iPocket mini, there is no reason why not go go buy one! Heck - I’m buying a few just so I can stick one on the back of my current PDA, as well as on a few other gadgets I carry with me frequently. The iPocket is available in six shades.

Slashphone has posted one of the cooler RAZR concepts I’ve seen in a while. The designer is really onto something here. I’m suddenly almost wishing the Franklin would have a form factor like this. Make it a candy bar-style form in your pocket (much narrower than the current Franklin) that could be used to receive calls. To dial or use the Windows Mobile features, slide it out for a full keyboard. Are you listening Motorola?

Matias, the makers of some excellent mechanical keyboards, has just announced a version of their OS X keyboard with a built-in USB hub on the top of the keyboard providing a slot for an iPod shuffle. It’s kind of a cheesy idea - but looks pretty slick. For anyone who frequently plugs in their shuffle, or a USB thumb drive, this keyboard could be quite useful.

Scientists Create Emulated Society - May Generate Virtual Culture

Scientists have taken the concept of agent-based AI one step further and are creating a virtual world inhabited by agents capable of learning, changing, breeding and evolving. The virtual agents will need to learn to survive - make their own food, develop a form of communication, create a life for themselves - all on their own. The sistem will have a series of 1000 agents hosted on a server farm of about 50 computers and rendered for the real world using a modified version of the Counter Strike gaming engine. Hopefully the agents will develop a form of communication - to then be deciphered by human computer scientests and linguists - of their very own. A very interesting read and concept.

If you’re reading this, you most likely own an iPod. If not, hasn’t Apple convinced you yet? Have you not seen the TV spots? I digress…iPod Downloads has created a beta application which allows you to play Black Jack on your device. It’s not impressive yet, but at least you don’t have to play parachute while waiting in a long line. There are some updates happening this week which allow more games onto your iPod (about 100-150). Ironically enough, the app is Windows only.
