Xbox Live LogoWord on the street is that Peter Moore has been discussing with industry insiders the possibility of bringing Xbox Live Arcade games into a brick-and-mortar store near you.  The move is aimed to reach the 50% of Xbox 360 owners who aren’t connected to Live.  Moore also hopes to reach the legions of casual gamers who may not yet know about the laid back, retro, puzzle solving side of the Xbox 360.  Microsoft isn’t commenting on the plans, so no info on pricing or which titles wil jump to retail is yet available.

The 1337 Music Video

Posted by Josh Smith Categories: Internet, Retro,

Are you 1337?  The rap group 64K is, and they certainly let us know it in their recent smash hit 1337.  The group’s rhymes emulate the Beastie Boy style and take you on a journey from the days of the Atari 2600 all the way up to the next-gen.  The rap superstars are actually part of Loading Ready Run, a comedy group out of Canada, who give an entertaining timeline for video systems.  1337 is filled with many great gaming gems and no really good rap, and you can surely relate to some system/game combo they are reppin!  Anyone who still owns 3 Power Gloves, a Nintendo Superscope and cabinets of old school classics is definitely Leet.  Here at Playfeed we’re 1337, are you?

Latest Gear Live Videos

New videos are beginning to surface via YouTube of Intelligent System’s upcoming 2d action/RPG hybrid Super Paper Mario. Previously, there was almost no official info for the title other than a 30 second trailer at E3.  Based on gameplay footage from the videos, Super Paper Mario looks to be the spiritual successor to the 2004 GameCube title Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The series has always taken an untraditional, humorous approach to the RPG genre and is taking that one step further this time with the inclusion of classic 2d Mario gameplay, various playable characters such as Bowser and Peach, and even the ability to switch between 2D and 3D viewpoints in order to discover new paths. Super Paper Mario is set to be released in Japan on August 3rd and will reach US shores a few months later on October 9th. Heres hoping this promising title isn’t overlooked amidst the hype of the upcoming Nintendo Wii launch.

DS Game and Watch Collection CaseClub Nintendo Japan has got more items to keep the Nintendo fanboys back in the States drooling. Chief among them is an exclusive title, Game and Watch Collection for the DS, which features ports of many of the old-school Game and Watch games, including Donkey Kong. Another great-looking item is a DS game case, roughly the size of a CD case, that has room for 9 DS cartridges and includes 7 different DS lite styluses in a variety of colors (one for each day of the week?)

We can only hope that one day Nintendo will realize its folly and create something similar to Club Nintendo for the USA. For now, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for eBay auctions of what are sure to become some highly sought-after items.

Xbox 360Microsoft has been making progress at getting more games on the Xbox 360 compatibility list, and as such, remembering which individual games will work and which will not is getting to be more of a chore when raiding the bargain bins for older original Xbox titles. Now, thanks to Major Nelson, with the printable list gamers no longer have to wonder if it was Sneakers or Conker that was compatible. (Unfortunately, it was Sneakers.)

In addition, the following Japanese-only titles are now supported: Bistro Cupid 1, Flight Academy, Othello Seminar, Igo Seminar, Shogi Seminar, and Mahjong Seminar. The highlights are probably Doom 3, Star Wars Battlefront, and RalliSport Challenge. Its also nice to see a Rare title on the list, but it looks like Conker is still not supported. Other titles still AWOL from the backward compatibility list include both of the MechAssault titles, among others, but it looks like they are making good progress in getting more original Xbox support out there. For those gamers without Xbox Live, a CD-burnable update and physical media should be available soon.

Peter Moore announced by way of Major Nelson’s weekly Podcast that next week there should be an update to the backwards compatibility offerings for the Xbox 360.  He explained that 20 titles will be added to the growing list of BC games including Lego Star Wars and Doom 3. Moore withheld the full list of backward compatible games for fear of “emulation ninjas.”

Peter Moore also went on to explain how his comments on backwards compatibility were taken out of context last week.  According to Moore the comment referred to backwards compatibility not being as big of a deal at E3 2006 compared to E3 2005.  Peter Moore ends the interview by saying “Its not the case that we don’t care about backwards compat, boy we care about backwards compat.”  He also states that Microsoft plans to get as close as possible to the original goal of having all of the Xbox games working on the Xbox 360.  Readers, what games are you waiting for to be backwards compatible?

Gametap The ads for Gametap are everywhere, but does the service stack up? Ryan A. Allen over at Game Industry News takes an in-depth look at the subscription-based retro-gaming service. Gametap concentrates on classic ROMs using its own proprietary emu software (37 MB download). The service has a lot of games available (over 500 titles in the “Game Vault”). And according to Allen, it’s fairly easy to install and use.

After selecting a game, users are presented with a product detail page covering everything from the games original release date to instructions on how-to play.  The game play Allen experienced is a surprising replication of how he remembered playing specific titles back in the day.

The service has a few quirks, however.  Allen complains that there are no chat areas so that players can talk with each other. Also there aren’t any vintage Nintendo titles. He also wishes there were more systems in the lineup, and says that the mouse control on some of the DOS titles was a problem. But in spite of these issues, Allen says that the $9.95/month subscription is a good value for this retro-gaming service.

Earthbound NESGameSetWatch reports on an insane find that a collector found at a recent garage sale in New York. Apparently, a former employee of Nintendo was selling off a large lot of Nintendo and Super Nintendo games and prototypes that he had accumulated during his years at Nintendo of America. Some of the lot include some of the Starfox competition cartridges used for the Nintendo national tours back in their heyday, and prototypes of the NES version of Earthbound, and apparently, the only copy of the original Nintendo Campus Challenge NES cartridge known to exist. Some of the lot have made their way to Ebay, including a prototype of Zelda 3 for the Super Nintendo, with a “Buy It Now” price of $2000, so those gamers looking to round out their collection of every SNES cartridge ever made now have their chance.
