Popular Science Best Of 2006Popular Science picked Nintendo’s Wii console as one of the best innovations in 2006, giving it the Grand Award in the home entertainment category. Popular Science gave the console the award for its innovative motion sensitive controller and its simplification of gameplay, making a “console that gets you in the game.” Nintendo picks up yet another award from a source outside the mainstream video gaming press, perhaps illustrating its broad appeal.

Wii BundleEBGames just sent an e-mail out to their mailing list subscribers describing their online pre-order program. On Thursday evening CST, the company will place a limited number of Wii bundles online. Each bundle will sell for $699, and will be limited to 1 per household. EBGames’ official statement is this:

This Thursday evening (CST), November 9, your opportunity to get in on the excitement arrives when our Wii bundle becomes available for pre-order online at EBgames.com. You’ll get the best games, accessories and more in one convenient package delivered right to your door - all for under $699 plus tax and handling!

Quantities are extremely limited and there will be a limit of 1 Wii bundle per household, limited to US delivery only. Ordering a bundle does not guarantee shipment at launch and orders will be shipped on a first-come, first-serve basis. The bundle will be removed from the site as soon as we have reached our expected quota.

$699 for an online bundle that doesn’t guarantee a console at launch seems to be folly, particularly when so many other retailers seem to be getting a plentiful supply of the console at launch.

TargetA post on the IGN boards purports to be a listing of the Wii allocations of each Target store for the console’s launch. There are two lists, one list of allocations and another that lists which store number belongs to a particular location. For those that do not want to do the matching, another user has kindly coded a quick application that will let users search for the particular store that they are interested in. If true, this information combined with the previous guide to getting a Wii on launch day should help gamers decide where to spend their time camping out when the console is released on November 19.
Update: A member of Infendo’s forums details Target’s launch day plans here, and confirms that the allocation numbers are accurate. According to this information, stores open at their normal times, tickets get handed out at 7:00 AM for people in line. It is starting to sound like there are going to be tons of Wii consoles hitting the market on launch day, given Target’s fairly large allocations.

Twilight Princess

Nintendo’s embargo on all things Zelda ended on Friday, and those people who were invited up to Nintendo HQ to preview The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess were finally able to talk about what they saw and experienced. Overall, the tone has been that Nintendo has released another masterpiece in the Zelda series. Some sites were more effusive than others, with some believing that this release is close to being the “greatest Zelda ever.” Some were a little more cautious about their praise, citing such issues as the quality of the graphics and the adjustment needed for the Wii-mote. Most everyone agreed that this should be one of the longest Zelda outings ever, clocking in with at least 50 hours of gameplay. Overall the previews have been very positive, and Twilight Princess looks to be the launch title to have this holiday season. Those gamers looking to avoid spoilers may wish to stay away from some of the previews; Wired’s Game|Life blog does a very good job in avoiding plot points and details over giving an overall impression of the game, and GameSpot contains the majority of their spoilers to a single page within the preview. Other previews, though, seem to sprinkle the plot points through their coverage, so those looking to go into the new Zelda fresh might want to stay away. Still, reading through all of the coverage for any new details of the game will be really hard to resist for fans of the series. The previews are (in alphabetical order):

Twilight Princess

Nintendo has posted a couple of new trailer videos for Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii. The first shows off the introduction to the game, with Link riding through the game world. The second offers some tidbits of the gameplay and the cutscenes for the game. Also available on Wii.com are some gameplay experience videos, with other players taking on the new Zelda on the Wii. The new videos definitely recall the previous incarnations of Link on the Nintendo 64, with new twists and upgrades for Nintendo’s new console.

Wii Logo Oh Nintendo… why is it that you’re so well-loved over in Japan, but constantly the runner-up here. Could it be because gamers here are into more “mature” content? Could it be that you’re a native company in Japan? Or is just because you save all of your best, most awesomest stuff for Japan only. First there were the Japan-only Game and Watch collection, the Japan-only DS game cases, then the Japan-only “Bit Generations” games and the (now formerly) Japan-only Pink and Black DS Lites. And now? You guessed it, an incredibly awesome list of Virtual Console games for the Wii that is (for the time being at least) Japan-only.

Click the jump for the complete list of VC games that you WON’T be playing on launch day. (Although methinks Nintendo will be bringing a lot of these state-side shortly).

WiiNintendo of America today announced that Wii owners will have 32 Wii titles and 30 Virtual Console titles available within the first five weeks of the console’s launch date. While third-party software publishers are still polishing Wii software that may or may not be available day-and-date with the console’s launch, Nintendo promises that most or all of these will hit the launch window. As titles get locked down, Nintendo will release an official software launch list. Games appearing within the first five weeks of launch include Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Excite Truck, along with a host of titles from premiere third-party publishers like Activision, Atari, EA, Konami, Sega, and Ubisoft.

Nintendo is also promising 30 Virtual Console games before the end of December, including classic games from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and NEC’s TurboGrafx16.

A full list of the launch window titles for both the Wii and the Virtual Console continue below in Nintendo’s official press release.

AARPNintendo is apparently serious about courting gamers outside of the typical age demographic. The New York Times is reporting that Nintendo had a booth at the AARP’s annual Life@50+ event. While attendees had opportunities to participate in activities and workshops targeted at the 50+ demographic, Nintendo probably stood out from the rest of the exhibitors. While it is unclear whether Nintendo will actually have any traction in this demographic, the company does seem to be actively pursuing untapped markets.

DescriptionThis is perhaps one of the best pieces of news for those of you out there worrying about the Wii’s online functionality. While the Wii will still utilize a “friend code” system, the friend code will be specific to the console, not to each game, meaning that you’ll be able to connect with your friends simply and quickly without having to update their info each time they buy a new game.

The multiple-code system is one of the biggest annoyances with the DS Nintendo WiFi Connection experience, so we’re overjoyed to hear that going online with your Wii is going to be that much easier. Look after the jump for better pictures of the console’s “address book” functionality.

Wiimote ColorsFrom the “yeah right, let’s see how long this lasts” department, we bring you the shocking news that Nintendo has no plans to offer their Wii console in any color other than white. In a quote found by online blog Codename Revolution, Nintendo’s General Planning Manager recently announced that, while Nintendo plans to offer their Wiimote in a variety of candy-licious colors, the Wii itself will not be getting the same treatment:

Nintendo’s Planning General Manager Mitsuaki Hagishima was interviewed recently in the latest issue of Nintendo Dream in Japan. In summary, Hagishima revealed that Nintendo does not have any plans for a different colored Wii, however they do plan to release different Wii-mote colors.

If this were true, it would make it the first console since the SNES not to be offered in a variety of colors. All of Nintendo’s recent consoles - including the Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, GBA-SP, DS, DS Lite, N-64, and Gamecube - have been offered in a variety of colors, and Nintendo has been known to use new colors as a way to re-gain interest in their systems. Still, with Nintendo’s least successful non-handheld consoles being offered in multiple colors (I’m looking at you, Gamecube and N-64), maybe Nintendo is on to something here.
