Virgin Vampires

"Anyone schooled in Hammer — even at an elementary level — can see that the duo has succeeded. Personally, having recently consumed the Blu-rays of the early 1970s’ Vampire Circus and Twins Of Evil, I could see the stamp permeating every page: a heavy cloak of Gothic atmosphere, rich period details, tight corsets to best accentuate the cleavage …”

- Reviewer Rod Lott on Virgin Vampires, the graphic novel created by writer Douglas Brode and artist Joe Orsak

ClarkesworldNeil Clarke is the editor of a nifty sci-fi magazine called Clarkesworld.

The current issue - #74 - features fiction from E. Catherine Tobler, Maggie Clark and Brooke Wonders, and all kinds of other sci-fi goodies.

Neil’s found himself in a bit of a scrape - a bad personal year has put the finances of the magazine at risk.

He explains it better at his blog, but if you love the sci-fi and want to help keep a progressive (and paying) market viable, there are some opportunities to help out and get rewarded with quality readable stuff.

Twinkie The Kid and Fruit Pie The MagicianI'm still reeling from the loss of Twinkies and Ding Dongs, the meth of bloggers. So bear with me.

Tainted Archive points us in the direction of James Bond - all of the novels (including those not written by Ian Fleming) are being put online courtesy of Ian Fleming Publications.

I barely understand the world of high-finance, but apparently, Snoopy is going to be issuing bonds. Iconix, the owners of Peanuts, will use the money to go on a spending spree and acquire at least one more company for their portfolio.

Hellblazer 53

"I am getting a number of messages and notes on the cancellation of Hellblazer. This was not an easy decision and I'd like to say there is a natural conclusion to the Constantine storyline in the Hellblazer series. Number 300 will be as special as you would expect it to be. Hellblazer's had a long and incredibly successful run and that's a tip of the hat to all the great creators that have worked on the book over the years. The new Constantine series will return him back to his roots in the DCU and hopefully be the start of another incredible run. Thanks for all your thoughts and support. Best, DD"

- Dan DiDio addresses fanboy outrage at the cancellation of Hellblazer (posted on his Facebook wall)

Darbee Darblet in box

Earlier today we posted our DarbeeVision Darbee Darblet review. It's a product with a ridiculous name, for sure, but the magic that it works on your HDTV signal is nothing to laugh at. We've put together a Darbee Darblet unboxing gallery to give you a close-up look at the hardware.

Sonos Play:3

We're music fans here at Gear Live (seriously, check out the Gear Live Rdio channel!) so we wanna make sure to include great music gadgets in our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide. This year, we're kicking it off with the Sonos PLAY:3. If you're unfamiliar with Sonos, it's basically the best way to get music from just about any location (your computer, your iPhone, the web, the cloud, etc.) to play in any room in your house. It's super intuitive, and even years after using Sonos, the technology still blows us away. The Sonos PLAY:3 is a wireless all-in-one music system that lets you jump right into the Sonos experience. If you have an iOS or Android device, you can download the Sonos remote control app, and you can also control the system with a computer using the Sonos Desktop Controller. Here are some other Sonos products that go nicely with the Sonos PLAY:3, which itself you can get for $299 from Sonos, or order from Amazon and get a free Sonos Bridge included with purchase!

You can use a pair of Play:3 or Play:5 units to create wide stereo sound as well!

Darbee Darblet review

We always recommend that HDTV purchasers get their sets calibrated professionally--you just end up getting way more for your money when your television is optimized for your viewing environment. When we heard about the Darbee Darblet from DarbeeVision, we were skeptical. This is supposed to be a gadget that you integrate into your home theater setup that adds a level of sharpness and depth that's unreachable even with hours of calibration. Sounds like a cheap gimmick, right? Well, we decided to put the Darblet to the test, and…wow…we came away impressed. Join us in our Darbee Darblet review to find out why every videophile needs to pick one of these up!
