Gear Live Interview: Benjamin Rudolph, Parallels
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Features, Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Software,
Parallels Desktop has quickly replaced VirtualPC in the eyes of many a Mac user, as the product works (and works well) on Macs running on Intel chips. Throughout it’s beta period, the Parallels Desktop for Mac software grew due to the dedicated help from the Mac community. The product is now out of beta and ready for purchase. We caught up with Parallels’ Benjamin Rudolph to talk about how to they to where they are today:
Ben, thank you for taking some time to talk with us today. Tell us a little about what you do at Parallels.
Good to be here! I’ll keep this short since I’m the least interesting thing we’ll be talking about today….I lead our marketing and communications efforts here at Parallels, including PR, product marketing, and partner relationships.
How soon after the announcement of the Intel Macs did development of Parallels Desktop for Mac begin?
We started thinking about a Windows-on-Mac solution when Apple made the announcement that they were moving to Intel chips. Since our virtualization engine was already compatible with the x86 chipset, it was simply a matter of porting the code over to the Mac, refining the API, and getting devices working.

Bleeding Edge Byte 014: A Horrific Xbox 360 Purchasing Experience
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Editorial, Features, Video Games, Videocasts,
In this special Sparky’s Story Hour, Sparky details what happened when he attempted to buy an Xbox 360 from Wal-Mart, and whole-heartedly begs you to reconsider if Wal-Mart is the only place that has one in stock near you. From silly down-selling from the retailer, to the associate and their manager not being able to scan a copy of Oblivion, to paying over $1,000 for an Xbox, this is one tale you need to hear.

The Invisible Shield Review Update
Posted by Oscar M. Cantu Categories: Accessories, Features, Portable Audio / Video, Product Reviews,
Back in December we reviewed ”The Invisible Shield” from Shield Zone and thought it was an excellent product that could be improved in its installation process. We were pleased to see that Shield Zone is now including an application solution bottle and some nice instructions with every package sent to customers. This makes the installation process a lot easier and painless. No more do you have to guess with the soap to water ratio or referring back to online instructions. Once again, if you’re about to buy an iPod, you need to protect your investment with this product.

Bleeding Edge Byte 012: Motorola SLVR and Motorola L6 Review
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Features, Product Reviews, Videocasts,
We recently put the Motorola SLVR and Motorola L6 phones to the test, and are ready to report back with our findings. If you are looking for an iTunes-compatible phone that also looks good (unlike the ROKR,) the SLVR just might be what you need if you are on Cingular’s network. If iTunes isn’t your thing - or if you have an iPod and don’t need a 100 song limit - then the blueish L6 might be more to your liking if ultra-slim phones are your thing. Download the video for our full review.

Gear Live Podcast 019: The Horrors of Cancelling AOL
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Features, Internet, Podcasts,
Okay, hold on. Over a year ago, we reported that AOL would make it easier for customers looking to cancel their accounts. Apparently, someone didn’t get that memo. Vinny over at Insignificant Thoughts made the decision to cancel his AOL account, figuring that $14.95 per month could be spent in a much more beneficial way than giving it to AOL. He recorded his conversation with “John at AOL” and has made it available for all to hear. Truth be told, we got upset just listening to the atrocious service that Vinny received. Be sure to download the clip below to hear for yourself.

Bleeding Edge Byte 008: WowWee Roboreptile Interview
Posted by Chris Cardinal Categories: Design, Features, Toys, Videocasts,
WowWee demonstrated for us their new Roboreptile, a “quicker, more cunning” version of their Roboraptor. We must have missed the memo explaining that “quicker” and “more cunning” were now euphemisms for “spastic” and “utterly stupid.” Suffice to say, this interview was a brilliant exercise in professional courtesy, as we had to try our best not to break down and laugh as the pathetic, over-priced, and bizarre robotic toy (which we wouldn’t pay $20 for at Radio Shack) nearly flailed itself right off the table in a fit of white, melodramatic, plasticy rage.
This all makes for a very stark contrast to the Ugobe Pleo, a dinosaur-based artificial life form that features three times the sensors, intelligence to keep it from walking off a table, and the ability to communicate with other Pleo’s, along with a ton of other innovative features.
When asked about a successor to the sorry, largely pointless Roboreptile, we receive a “no, not really anything planned” which made the interview all the more special.
We can’t quite grasp what would encourage someone to throw away $120 at a crappy plastic dinosaur that doesn’t really do much but seize and fall over, but perhaps there’s a market in people who don’t really know any better. Stay away from this novelty at all costs.

Bleeding Edge Byte 007: Announcing Our Xbox 360 Winner!
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Announcements, Design, Features, Video Games, Videocasts,
Okay, so a little over a month or so ago, we asked Bleeding Edge viewers to get out there and create fan sites for the show. The person who we thought had the best site was promised an Xbox 360. Well, the results are in, and in this episode we announce the winner. Scilynt created Livin On Da Edge, and we liked it so much, we figured we would give him an Xbox 360 for his troubles. Hey, no crying because you didn’t win! In fact, we still have one more Xbox 360 to give away. If you want it, check out how to win.
Congrats Scilynt!
