This is an entry from our 2006 Holiday Gift Guide. Check it out for suggestions on what to buy your loved, liked, and hated ones this holiday season!

iPod nano

The recently overhauled iPod nano is almost a splitting image of the old-school iPod mini. You know, the anodized-aluminum casing that is available in multiple colors? Yeah, that’s the one. The new casing is much more scratch-resistant than the original nano, and features a brighter screen along with better battery life (26 hours!) and a thinner shell, if you can believe that. The new iPod nano also features updated software which includes a nice search interface. What you aren’t getting, though, is the ability to play movies or the new iPod games that are available in iTunes - however, we think that most people on the lookout to purchase a nano aren’t necessarily the gaming type. Plus, who would want to play Zuma on a screen this tiny? Still, for a flash-based portable music player, we give the nod to the iPod nano. Hey, you can even get the RED nano and help in the fight against AIDS. Feel free to check out our iPod nano unboxing video.

Mac commercialDespite recent rumors started last week on Radar, Justin Long says he is still the “Mac guy.” On his web page Justin states, “We’re doing some holiday spots now which I think will be pretty funny — not nearly funny enough to justify [sic] the money they’re paying me though, I’ll be honest with you.”

This is good news to us, since we are big fans of Apple’s creative spots and can’t wait to see the new commercials. Let’s just hope that fellow actor John Hodgman is smart enough not to cover Justin’s mouth with his hand again.

United AirlinesApple has announced that it has teamed up with airlines Continental, Delta, Air France, United, Emirates, and KLM to offer integration between iPods and in-flight entertainment. This service, which includes charging during flight, will become available in mid-2007.

“There is no better traveling companion than an iPod, and now travelers can power their iPods during flight and even watch their iPod movies and TV shows on their seat back displays,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing.
We knew that iPod’s friendliness would eventually take flight when we found out that 70% of U.S. autos already offer that connectivity.

Apple releases C2D MacbooksLike its larger sibling, Apple’s upgraded MacBooks were released quietly earlier today, also now complete with Intel Core 2 Duo microprocessors. Boasting a 25% performance increase, though under actual usage, this may be slightly exaggerated, the 13.3” white portable computers now come with a 1.83GHz processor by default, but are also available in the 2GHz variety. The higher-end black model comes stock with a 2GHz C2D. Aside from larger hard drives, which can be upgraded to up to 200GB, no noticeable spec bumps have been made, though it remains to be seen if Apple also secretly added a 802.11n wireless card into the MacBook, like they did with the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros and iMacs.

So, now that all three of the new iPods are available for mass consumption, we figured we would put all three next to each other to truly show the sizes of the three brothers iPod. We took an iPod with video, a second generation iPod nano, and the second generation iPod shuffle, forced them to lay all over each other, and took images of the affair. Alright, so the second generation iPod shuffles are now shipping, and that calls for another iTunes update courtesy of Apple. The lowdown on iTunes 7.0.2 is that it “...adds support for the Second Generation iPod shuffle and addresses a variety of stability and performance issues found in iTunes 7 and 7.0.1.” Okay, we can handle that - support for the new shuffle as well as stability and performance enhancements? Ricky MartinArriba! Apple’s iTunes Store has been offering Latin music as a genre, but costumers have been asking for more. Today Apple has granted their request by launching a Latino section with a mix of regional Mexicano, pop, and baladas y boleros. Apple has made this arrangement with NBC Universal’s Telemundo, and will also provide Spanish-language and bilingual TV as well as podcasts. Telemundo programs such as “Pasion de Gavilanes,“El Cuerpo del Deseo,” and “mun2: The Immigration Special” are now available for download at $1.99 each. More will become available on iTunes in months to come. Apple es muy bueno, no?
