PC DartsNo need to sneak away to the nearest tavern for a chummy game of darts. Epoch’s PC Dart Set even looks like the genuine article. The board is a full 15.5-inches and your monitor supplies the score so you really can’t cheat

miscount, although someone should draw you a line that you can’t cross. Attachable to your PC via your USB port, there are several variations of games to keep you interested enough not to go back to finishing whatever you were doing on your computer at the time you needed a break. The best part is that no one will tell you when you have to go home or bellow out “Last call.”

The USB Doorbell replaces your current one and allows you to play sound effects, audio clips, and WAVS or MP3s. Plug it into your computer to load, then attach it to your existing wiring if it is low (4 to 24) voltage. It has three different volume settings, a mounting loop, needs three AA batteries (not included,) and carries an MSRP of $99.99 at ThinkGeek. We were thinking that we would equip ours with Lurch asking “You Rang?” or Clint Eastwood saying “Make My Day, Punk!” The possibilities seem endless.

And by the way, we find it sort of fascinating that YouTube is becoming an outlet for commercials. This makes for good product demos and certainly helps us here at Gear Live, but we wonder how soon the site will be saturated with ads, and if the site will eventually be charging for that benefit.

Kinyo Flash Player Many of us use our trusty thumb drive to store our music, but how would you like to play your music from said drive? We bring you the Kinyo MB-200 Portable USB Flash Player, a rather long moniker for a small and handy speaker. That’s right: just plug your thumb drive into the MB-200’s USB port and press play. The speaker plays MP3, WAV and WMA formats, has an equalizer, and is compatible with iPods, MP3 or CD players and other music sources. While speaker systems with USB ports are nothing new, the MB-200 is easily one of the smaller ones. Requires AAA batteries or AC adapter (both included!). Unfortunately, there is no pricing info on the product website.

USB AquariumAnother USB Powered Aquarium has hit the market, this time brought to you by USB.brando. The gimmick here is that you really don’t have to worry about overfeeding since the fish are merely toys with hinged tails and what the company refers to as “life-like motion.” The Interactive menu on included software permits you to feed your fish, play with them, and turn the LED nightlight on and off. At a size of 11.2 x 11.2 x 8.8 cm, it is compatible with Windows 2000/XP. The MSRP of $23.00 makes it a viable contender in the aquatic gadget market, especially when you consider you won’t have to eventually flush the little guys away.

USB Bouncer

Don’t you hate it when you return to your cubicle after lunch—and find that someone’s either been on your computer or “borrowed” your stapler? Well to protect your privacy and precious office supplies, we suggest the USB Bouncer. The tuxedoed brute is motion-activated, and says a variety of bouncer-esque phrases when someone comes near, such as “You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin’”, “You’re not welcome ‘ere”, “Not today, mate”, and more. While the USB Bouncer can’t physically stop a potential pilferer, we think he’ll at least scare the bejesus out of said intruder, and that’s good enough for us. Available for $20 USD.

USB Shredder We’ve certainly brought you quite a few -powered gadgets that are a little on the wacky side, but here’s one that just about everyone can use, especially business travelers. It’s the USB Shredder by Kinlan Industrial, a handheld shredder powered by either 4 AA batteries, AC adapter, or of course, USB.  Just turn it on and it can shred sensitive documents on the go, including standard-size ones, as it is 10” long (and weighs only 12 ounces). Just make sure you have something to catch all that shredded paper in. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find pricing information on this handy item, so stay tuned…

Zubene

Golden Bridge Eletech has recently unveiled two solar energy products that can power up handhelds such as digital cameras, cell phones, or MP3 Players. Unveiled at Computex 2007, the Regulus and Zubene banks have two parts, a control and solar module. Run by a lithium-polymer battery, it outputs through built-in USB with three LEDs to show the charging status. The solar module is waterproof and features a “triple-junction amorphous” silicon solar cell to absorb differing light wavelengths efficiently. It is also flexible, so that you can carry it backpack-style. The two models only will both become available in September for $129.99 at funGaia.

USB Talking BouncerEvery PC should have their own Bouncer to get others to back off. He is motion-activated and will respond with one of six phrases, such as the two shown here. At a size of 20 x 13 x 6 cm (~7.9 x 5.1 x 2.4-inches,) the dimunitive guard is USB (cord supplied) or battery operational with 3 AAAs (also included.) At a price of £9.95 (~$20.00,) you can hire one of your own online at Gobaz. We are thinking he would make an excellect participant at our next party. When one of our buds has had a little too much to drink, we wonder if the Bouncer can take away his car keys while keeping him away from the wetbar.

USB Think Light

We wonder what Thomas Alva Edison would have made of this incarnation of the light bulb, courtesy of the always-entertaining Brando website. It’s the Think Light, and basically, the faster you type, the brighter the lamp shines. If you stop typing, the lamp goes off. That’s it!  We suggest pairing it with Brando’s equally wacky USB Mini Fridge to add a little fun and frivolity to your

mundane job

workday. By the way, if you’re seriously looking to test your typing speed and accuracy, we highly suggest the video game
“The Typing of the Dead”, part of the “House of the Dead” video game franchise, in which you kill zombies by correctly typing words that flash onscreen. Yes, we’re serious. The USB Think Light is available for $15.
