We love technology because it makes our lives a little easier and a lot more fun. But technology has its scary, dark side, too. Case in point the Spy Ear. Charge the listening device via USB, then put your SIM card inside. Hide it near whomever you wish to spy on, then call the card from another phone. When connected, you can hear everything going on in Spy Ear’s vicinity.
enemies are too cheap to shell out the $85 USD. AC adapter also included.

USB Badge Drive Stores Way More than Your ID

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Accessories, USB, Storage,

We’re not sure if this item is the ultimate in geekiness…or usefulness. It’s the USB Badge Drive: a job ID holder/necklace on one side, but turn it over and BAM! there’s a drive for various sized memory cards. Just attach the included USB port, plug it into your computer and transfer important files from your PC to the drive and vice versa. Supports SDHC, MMC, Mini SD, RS MMC and MicroSD/T-Flash cards (an adapter is required for the latter). Super cool? Or Super Geeky? You make the call. Available for $14 USD.

Hacoa, a Japanese company that makes wooden peripherals by hand, will soon be releasing a DIY USB keyboard kit. Announced at the recent CEATEC 2007, the Ki-Board DIY Kit is strictly for users who can use a saw and have assembly capability. We figure that since it takes the company an entire day to create one, they have decided to let us do all the work, and feel the pride while keeping Band-Aids in business. The kit will be available for JPY 34,800 (~$300.00.)

This makes our list for the most ingenious electronic rodent that we have seen in a while. The Foot Mouse (aka Slipper Mouse) is designed for those who either have the need for an alternative mouse, or for those who just want to keep both hands free while they work. Bili Inc. claims that their mouse is perfect for audio/video/movie editors, animators, graphic designers, architects, programmers, etc., but we suspect it may take a bit of time to adapt to the concept. Connectible by USB, the slipper and button pad are available at Bili for both Windows and Mac for $199.00, with a 15.5 x 11-inch mat thrown in as a freebie.

The LEGO iPod Dock. Seriously!

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Misc. Tech, Mods / Hacks, Portable Audio / Video, USB,

LEGO is that rare toy that’s still huge with kids on a totally fun level, and huge with their parents on a totally retro level, witness the LEGO USB drive. Now LEGO has reached the pinnacle of adoration by being transformed into an iPod dock with speakers! What’s interesting is that the dock doesn’t need external power, so you can use it virtually anywhere, just don’t expect ear-shattering volume. Cute. Fun. Retro. Available for approx. $16 USD.

The 1GB USB Penguin Flash Drive: Cutest Gadget Ever?

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Accessories, USB, PC / Laptop, Peripherals, Storage,
Who doesn’t love penguins? The success of Oscar winners “March of the Penguins” and “Happy Feet” proves the world adores that quirky, comical flightless bird. Gadget-wise, we’ve featured the shower radio and iPenguin, which yours truly—who has collected penguins for too many years to mention— happily owns. Now comes the 1GB USB Penguin Flash Drive, which includes the very handy ReadyBoost technology for Vista users. The penguin’s head actually protects the USB connector…just flip it up and you’re good to go. Impossibly cute and functional, we think Linux users (and fellow penguin-philes) will love it. The 1GB Penguin Flash Drive is available in Black/White or Black/Gray for approx. $34 USD.

We know summer is almost over, but if your office is anything like ours, it can get blazing hot for no apparent reason at any time of year. It’s days like these we wish we had the USB Airplane fan, an adorable, wheeled aircraft whose propeller becomes a cooling fan once plugged into your computer’s USB. And don’t worry, the propeller won’t cut your fingers if you decide to play with it (and you know you will). Pricing and availability from Kikkerland.com are not available yet, so stay tuned…
