just pushed out an update to their Backup software, which they highly recommend for all Backup 3 users. On our MacBook Pro, the download was 5.5 MB, while on our Mac Pro it weighed in at 6.3 MB. Not bad at all, especially with the promise of backup and restore with external drives, better memory management, and improved restores of bundled file types. Apple, as always, has provided full details on the Backup 3 support page, linked below.

Iogear PocketDrive Card ReaderSay you have an SD card full of photos, music, videos or files, but you—or whomever you wish to share those files with—doesn’t own an SD card reader. This probably happened to someone, and that ingenious someone invented Iogear’s USB Pocket SD Reader/Writer. Just insert the SD card and it’s now a bona fide thumb drive, able to read and write files. The drive has up to 480 Mbps data transfer rate, and works with both Windows and Mac. Also available for Micro and Mini SD cards, Rs-mmc, and (hello PSP’ers!) MS-Duo cards. Prices range from $9.97 to $12.97.

Verbatim Store'n'GoAs we store increasing amounts of music, photos, videos and software on our computers, the need for larger-capacity pocket drives continues to grow. Verbatim’s Store ‘n’ Go throws down the gauntlet, storing a whopping 12GB on a drive smaller than 3 inches high by 1.4 inches wide. The mini hard drive has a flip-out USB connector, and is compatible with most Windows, Mac and Linux systems. It even includes software such as Skype, AOL Instant Messenger and an email program, all of which can be run from the drive itself, and therefore can be used on any PC that connects to the internet. Priced at $179, look for the Store ‘n’ Go to hit retailers in the next few weeks.

Swiss Army USBIt cuts, it screws, it slices, it tweezes, it goes digital. The company that has brought us our beloved Swiss Army Knife has created a USB version that will store 512MB or 1GB. It also features an LED light and ballpoint pen, and works on Windows, Mac OS, or Linux. The knife is priced at $85.00 and $115.00, a bit more than the one we got for $11.00 at Target. We are still trying to figure out how the clever company managed to combine all of this in only 2 1/4 x 5/8 x 1/2-inches.

one love mimobotMimico, the creators of mimobots, continue to entertain us with their line of USB toys. Not only have they created 2 more Star Wars figures, they now have more artists coming up with Limited Editions. We’re thinking that their “one love, one heart series” is an innovative way to express your feelings should your spouse/partner ask you for more space this Valentine’s Day. Each mimbot is a high-speed 2.0 USB, compatible for windows, and is available in 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB at mimico, with prices beginning at $69.95.

Battery ConverterDuring the last power outage you needed a couple of D batteries, but all you had were spare AAs for your now useless remotes. Gadget.brando solves this problem with their Battery Converter. Simply insert the AA battery using matching polarity signs and you have the capacity to get that flashlight working. Since the devices only cost $5.00 apiece, you can keep several on hand. While we are wondering if that would be a faster drain on the resulting power, we are also thinking that it’s better than lighting a dozen candles.

In the latest episode of The ScobleShow, we got our first look at DAVE from Seagate. DAVE stands for “digital audio-video experience” and is a tiny 10 or 20 GB hard drive. Tiny as in 3.5 x 4.7 x .47-inches. The best part, though, is that this thing gives you the ability to share content by way of the built-in Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. So you can browse the devices with a cell phone, transfer content to other Bluetooth devices or DAVEs, and it has 10 hours of battery life. Expect it to retail for about $200 USD in May or June. For the full scoop, check the video above.

  USB Teddy

If you are as tired of seeing all those charming and optimistic USB drives as we are, we suggest the USB Teddy as a pessimistic alternative. Simply pop off its head, put the torso in your computer and you are good to go. Designed by Sergio de Ana, the gadget was originally just a stuffed bear that was meant to be a gift for his fiance, when the idea came to him to present it in this strange way. It became “bearly” doable when de Ana made it functional with 1 GB of storage space.
