Is it me, or is looking at this item making you think of endless R-rated jokes? Anyway, it’s not what you think it is (whatever that may be). It’s the Banana Guard, a storage case that protects the vulnerable, potassium-rich fruit from bruises and smushing. The Banana Guard was “designed to fit the vast majority of bananas,” is easy to open and close and even makes a snapping sound when shut. UFS to Be Standard for Memory Cards

Micron Technology, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Spansion, STM, and TI have announced that they get together to standardize removable memory cards and the technology embedded in them. The chore will be in the hands of JEDEC Solid State Technology Association with the new specification to be called Universal Flash Storage (UFS.) The aim here is less access time for memories, higher speed for large files and reduction of power.
The company claims that while 90 minutes (4GB) takes 3 minutes today to access, UFS will take only a few seconds. Handhelds, digital cameras, and other consumer electronics will be able to handle the new technology which should be finalized in 2009.

Image Moments Can Last Hours

This digital picture display caught our eye for its versatility. Digital Foci’s Image Moments features a hi-res digital LCD screen, a 7.4-inch viewing area, built-in support for memory card, interchangeable frame, automatic slide show with random or adjustable time and transition, and an automatic on/off timer. At a size of 11.4 x 9.8 x 1.9-inches, it can be used vertically, horizontally, or mounted with included wall brackets.
The IM supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 video as well as MP3 audio. The display offers file management, copy, deletion and renaming of photos. It comes in a standard black but eight different frames are available. The MSRP is a cool $169.00 after a $30.00 mail-in rebate. We can just picture our boss having one of these on his desk while we are inundated with 8 hours of Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family.”

Philips Reveals Power4Life

Philips has unveiled their new line of Power4Life universal chargers at the recent IFA 2007 in Berlin. Included is their SCE7640 for laptops, the SCE2110 for cell phones, and the SCM4380 and SCM2180 car charger kits. The SCM7880 can be plugged into an AC outlet and has a USB and mini-USB ports for charging. It also features an internal rechargeable battery for those times your cell phone is on its last bar during long road trips. Other tips are also obtainable. Check with Philips for future availability and price.

We have been showing you Solar Totes all summer, but if you assume you can do them one better at half the cost, you would probably be right. A 2-part instructional article is available to help you achieve your goal. It only takes a basic bag, a solar panel which costs about $57.00, solder, double sided tape, vinyl tape, about 1 m two-wire cable, and textile glue. The site talk2myShirt is very explicit, yet simplified in its directions and would love some feedback if you create one with their instructions. They also give tips about using your new bag and mention that they utilized theirs to recharge a complete empty iPod G5 in approximately 6 hours.

Sony Develops Sugar-Run Batteries

Sony Japan has come up with batteries that can run on glucose. Pour in some grape juice or Gatorade and the 4-cell array can power speakers hooked up to a Walkman with only the addition of a small fan to produce an output of up to 50mW. Even if you can’t make out the translation, check out the demo of the prototype on their site, which pretty much speaks for itself. We were wondering what flavor the device would prefer and decided Fruit Punch sounds like it might be our best option.
