Nokia Recalls 5610 XpressMusic Handsets
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Music, Rumors,
Rumor has it Nokia has announced that they are no longer offering their 5610 XpressMusic handset and will recall all of its existing inventory from stores and warehouses. This was prompted when a manufacturing problem affecting the phone’s display was detected. If you have one of the models, you can get a replacement of a 5310 or 6301 at any T-Mobile phone store plus a $25.00 or $50.00 credit from the company as a way of apologizing. While we are not completely convinced that this has gone past the rumor stage, we did notice that T-Mobile lists them as “temporarily out of stock.”

Dell Pharos-Branded Traveller Smartphones
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, GPS, Handhelds, Rumors,
When something like this comes out we just have to share. Rumor has it that Dell has gotten together with Pharos in an effort to jump on the smartphone bandwagon with the Traveller 117 and 127. Each has Windows Mobile 6.1, QWERTY keyboard and 7.2 Mbps HSDA support. They also have VGA video call capability, a 2 megapixel cam, and four hours of talk time and 200 standby. While the Travellers may have some awesome GPS capability, we don’t think Apple or RIM have too much to worry about.

The Mac mini has had a good run, but it sounds like Apple has decided to give the mini the ax. The smallest and cheapest Mac is no longer shipping or available for order, according to a couple large retailers in Europe say Gizmodo. Apple has a large financial call taking place today in which the mini is expected to get cut from the Mac lineup. Lets hope this is in preparation for an upcoming Mac mini (Mac nano?) at January’s MacWorld Expo as many suspected the mini to get a makeover, not a going away present.
The Mac Mini is still available on the Apple store, so you may want to get it now if you were thinking it over.

Wal-Mart selling iPhone 3G during Black Friday?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
You know, as much as we aren’t fan of Wal-Mart, we understand that it helps get products out to the masses. The latest rumor has Wal-Mart selling the iPhone 3G during the lead-up to this years Black Friday. This would make Wal-Mart the second big box retailer in the US to carry the iPhone, with the first being Best Buy. As is the policy with Best Buy, AT&T, and the Apple Store, we’d expect that you would have to activate the iPhone at Wal-mart.
If this rumor proves true, we expect a lot more iPhone 3Gs to be sold this holiday, and by that, we mean even more than the enormous amount that we had already predicted. Hey, AT&T, would you mind beefing up your 3G access a bit more? It’s gonna get crowded.

Apple notebook event this Tuesday
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, PC / Laptop, Rumors,
Apple has just announced that their next event will be taking place this coming Tuesday (read: five days from today), confirming rumors that October 14th would be the day that new notebooks would be unveiled. The company sent invitations to select media this morning, with a graphic of a notebook featuring the sub-heading “The spotlight turns to notebooks.” So, what should you expect to see? Well, if the rumor mill is correct, we’ll see updates across the board in the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines, including a new manufacturing process that sees the notebook casing carved out of a single block of aluminum. There are also rumblings of a true netbook from Apple as well, possibly launching in the $800 range.
As always, take these rumors with a grain of salt - but as we’ve seen with recent iPhone and iPod news, the latest Apple rumors have pretty much come to fruition.

Apple readying CDMA iPhone?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
The rumor mill has been buzzing today with whispers that Apple may be readying a CDMA version of the iPhone, which would have EVDO support. So, when would this one be announced? Apparently, at MacWorld 2009 in January. Unfortunately, we are gonna have to call shenanigans on this one. After all, Verizon Wireless was supposed to get the iPhone originally, but were too wrapped up in a traditional cell carrier mindset to see that it would be a boon to their business. Then, AT&T came in and signed a multi-year exclusivity contract in the USA. Plus, it’s not like Apple needs more distribution for the iPhone to make it a success, it’s doing just fine. We think they’d rather focus their iPhone staff on the next iteration of the phone, rather than going sideways to make one that will work on Verizon’s network. Sure, we could be wrong, but…nah…we don’t think so.

Nintendo to Release new DS
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Rumors, Video Games, Wireless / WiFi,
Rumor has it that Nintendo has plans for a new DS that will come out in time for the holidays. The DS2 will take pictures and play tunes. Also equipped for wireless application, it is expected to be less than ¥20,000 (~$189.00) when it is released in Japan. Although the DS is doing better globally, the PSP is outselling the DS there. We have no doubt that this move will make it more popular for those want the addition of the new features.

Samsung Forecasts the Demise of Blu-ray
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Movies, Rumors,
Samsung believes that Blu-ray will only last another 5 years and then will be replaced by another format or type of technology such as OLED. Andy Griffiths, Director of Consumer Affairs told Pocket-lint, “We will launch the OLED technology when it’s at a price that will be appealing to the consumer, unfortunately that’s not yet.”
Oddly enough, he may be right. We found out recently that Sony is rumored to be lowering the price of its BDP-S350 this month to make it a $300.00 purchase.

Let’s Rock: Apple event planned for September 9
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Portable Audio / Video, Rumors,
Well, what do you know? Looks like that Apple event that Kevin Rose speculated about a couple of weeks ago is finally official. This morning, Apple sent out notification of their next event, titled “Let’s Rock”, is set for September 9th. Now, looking at the graphic, we think it is pretty clear that this one is going to be focused on iPods. Apple is notorious for refreshing their portable media player line in September (heck, last September was when the iPod touch was announced) for the whole back-to-school and holiday vibe.
While we expect to see new models across the board, word on the street is that the iPod nano and iPod touch will be the ones to pay attention to this time around. That is, unless, you are like me and have tons of media that you want with you at all times. If that is you, then you are with me in hoping we see something akin to a 250GB iPod classic. Aside from that, though, some surprises would be nice. I know I’ve been asking for it for years now, and this probably isn’t the appropriate place to announce it, but I sure as heck would just love it if Apple would also give us a new Cinema Display. Could happen, right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either.
