Reuters: Apple finally readying subscription music service
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Music, Rumors,
We’ve been waiting for Apple to launch some sort of iTunes subscription music service for years now. Seeing other companies like Rhapsody, Napster, and Microsoft’s Zune offer it while leaving Apple out has been pretty frustrating. However, today Reuters is reporting (alongside CNET and the New York Post) that Apple is in talks with all the major record execs to pitch a new subscription music service. Basically, for $10-15 per month, you’d get unlimited access to pretty much the entire iTunes music library. It’s definitely a move to ward off Spotify, since they are trying hard to get into the US, as well as the impending launch of Windows Phone 7 which will include a hyped up and renewed push of the Zune Pass. We’d love to see this one happen.

WSJ: Verizon iPhone coming early 2011
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is readying plans to mass produce a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 that would allow Verizon Wireless to sell the phone early next year. They say their sources are “people briefed by Apple,” and we know that we’ve all gone over this rumor numerous times over the past couple of years, but it seems that 2011 marks the end of the AT&T exclusivity on the iPhone in the US, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit Verizon in the first quarter of 2011.
In other news, WSJ reports that Apple is already hard at work on the iPhone 5. Of course, with it expected to launch in just 8 months, that really isn’t news at all.

HP exec Todd Bradley refers to webOS tablet as PalmPad
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Handhelds, Rumors,
The webOS tablet slated for release in early 2011 hasn’t been given an official name, though an HP patent for ‘PalmPad’ led many to refer to it as such. Even HP’s Todd Bradley let this name slip during an Analyst Meeting.
“We’ve already announced the expansion of our future product portfolio well beyond smartphones. We’ll have a webOS-powered PalmPad that will be set for release early in 2011,” stated Bradley during the conference.
Whether or not Bradley let the official name slip or is just speaking in the vernacular is unclear; but PalmPad is a decent name that people are getting used to, so hopefully they don’t go a completely different route à la Ninendo’s Wii.

Sony looking for Android developers
Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Rumors, Video Games,
Sony announced via their website their desire to find an engineer with “experience in mobile development, specifically Android”, as well as with a “knowledgeable experience of online gaming.” While no direct conclusions can be drawn from Sony’s optimal candidate characteristics, it is not far fetched to speculate on the possibility of Sony aiming to counter gaming services on other mobile devices, namely Xbox Live. How they will pull off this is not known, but we expect it to work similar to the upcoming Xbox Live phone integration, with possibly even more of a focus on gaming itself. All of a sudden, the wait for Android 3.0 is on.

How to watch the live stream of Apple’s music event today
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Home Entertainment, Internet, Rumors, Software,
In just a few minutes, Apple will be live-streaming one of their own events for the first time, and we wanted to make sure you had the details on how to tune in. All you need to do is head to the Apple website at 10:00AM PDT today, and it should come right up—provided you’ve got the right hardware. According to Apple:
Viewing requires either a Mac running Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com.
The fall music event is expected to bring news of an updated iPod touch with Retina Display and dual cameras with FaceTime functionality, a super-small touchscreen iPod nano, and a new take on the Apple TV. We’re guessing that this whole live streaming this is because Apple wants to show off their streaming technology, since it will likely be a big part of their Apple TV and iTunes initiative this morning. We’re also hoping to hear about that white iPhone 4 and iOS 4 on the iPad.

Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
Blurry photos of Samsung’s R900 Craft surfaced about a week ago within HowardForums. While the R900 is not running those new fangled operating systems that all the kids are raving for these days, the pics reveal that the phone will run on the MetroPCS’s LTE network making it the first LTE capable phone stateside, so it does breed a bit of excitement. Currently MetroPCS has only confirmed LTE networks to cover metropolitan areas in Las Vegas and Dallas Fort Wort, but states that they will cover several more metropolitan markets as well. Check out more photos of the MetroPCS Samsung R900 after the jump.

Apple readying Facetime-capable iPad mini?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Rumors,
Our pals over at iLounge have gotten a few iPad-related tibdits from one of their sources, and we thought it was interesting enough to pass on. They are hearing that, in conjunction with the regular September ipod event that Apple conducts each year, that the company may announce a smaller version of the iPad. They say it’ll have a 7-inch display, making the screen closer to that of the Amazon Kindle (Amazon released a new Kindle last week.) We’ve also been hearing that a smaller iPad was on the horizon, but we didn’t hear anything about a date. Other sources are claiming that the next iPad will definitely ship with a front-facing camera as well, turning them into Facetime devices (the next iPod touch will likely include similar functionality.) Even if it doesn’t happen in September, we fully expect to see a smaller iPad by January.
If Apple wants Facetime to catch on, they definitely need to get it into more devices than just the iPhone 4, and this would be a good way to accomplish that. A smaller iPad with increased functionality launching so soon after the original could result in buyers remorse for some, but it’s not like Apple hasn’t made similar moves in the past, especially with the iPod a few years ago.
