HP LP3065

It looks like HP is interested in joining rather exclusive club of companies, including Apple and Dell, that offer a 30-inch LCD flat panel display. For connectivity, the monitor, dubbed the LP3065, requires a DVD-D dual link graphics card, with support of up to 2560 by 1600 resolution. The stand allows for 178 x 178 degree viewing angles and possesses 3 additional DVD inputs and HDCP content protection. The display also possesses a unique, new CCFL back-light.

Most surprising, however, is HP’s choice of color and design. The monitor is designed to be sleek, with emphasis on the black bezel, stand, and screen (when turned off). The ship date of the LP3065 is projected to be November 1, for a hefty sum of $1999.

The USB mouse features a black matte finish to match with Apple’s black MacBook model. Compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows XP equipped systems, the mouse has two buttons and a nondescript scroll wheel. The mouse also uses a 1600dpi resolution laser mechanism for precision and features “MicroScroll™”, the company’s response to Apple’s MightyMouse scroll ball. The company claims that their “scrollwheel delivers the precision of an ultra-small scrolling device, but without the frustrations of a tiny trackball.” It retails for $29.99.

Blue Ray

LG has launched three cute new models of Blu-Ray devices including a Player, fully functional Blu-Ray PC and a PC recording drive.

The Full HD Blu-Ray player will perfectly compliment their recently released line of LCD panel displays that support full 1080p at sizes up 55 inches.

The LG XPION X600 desktop PC will include a Super Multi Blue Blu-Ray writer (GBW-H10N) and boasts a Pentium D945 3.4GHz processor, a 320GB hard disk, 1GB of DDR2 memory and an NVidia GeForce 7900GT for smooth full HD playback.  The writer, which will also be sold separately, will burn up to 25GB and be the first drive to support 4x Blu-Ray recording to Blu-Ray recordable disks and 2x to rewritable media.

No price or release has been disclosed, but I expect an expensive price point, and as for a release date, I predict by the end of the year.

Cell Service

In today’s world, land line phones are becoming ancient technology.  More and more customers are leaving phone line systems for VoIP systems, while others, myself included, operate solely through their cellular service.  It never ceases to amaze me, however, that the quality of cellular service at home leaves something to be desired.  I have moved three times in the past two years, and haven’t been able to average more than a 2-bar signal in any of my homes. Excessive dropped calls, poor reception and sound quality, and the especially hated voice mail notice from calls that never rang. Sound familiar?  Well it may be time to invest in an amplification system to boost cellular signal while around the house.

The setup is simple, intuitive, and available for purchase from several manufacturers. It consists of a pair of antennas, one high gain and one low gain, and an amplification system.  The system works best if the large gain antenna is mounted outside of the house, but it is not necessary. The system improves your service by relaying the signals from the high gain antenna, through the amplifier, through a smaller antenna mounted somewhere inside the home and out to your cellphone . Transmitting works in the reverse fashion starting from the cell phone, to the small antenna, then through the amplifier and out the large antenna to the service tower.  The benefits to be gained here are two fold.  First, the antenna that communicates directly with the tower will have a much stronger response (higher gain) to the signals, both in and out, than the cell phone because of its sheer size.  Secondly, the signal is being amplified again through an in-line amplifier. The result is a serious increase in local signal to your cell phone resulting in better battery life, fewer dropped and missed calls, and just plain better quality service. This type of setup is not limited to the home either. There are also systems available for installation in your vehicle which operate on the same principle.

Popular Science has a full length article describing these setups and even points out some manufacturers and models of devices available today.

Optimus Mini Three

It seems like we have waited for both the Optimus OLED Keyboard and the for an eternity. The good news, however, is that the Mini Three has finally arrived, and ThinkGeek will soon be selling those bad boys. In fact, they got one in early, and took a few images to show the three-keyed device off. The OLED keys look great, but they only run at three frames-per-second, so don’t expect anything fancier than a constantly updating still image. Head on over to ThinkGeek for all the details.

We know that a bunch of our readers are gadget freaks to the point where we had to launch to specifically cover the opening of new gadgets. Looking to expand upon that, we are now launching a new video show, Unboxing Live. In Unboxing Live, we will simply take a new gadget, and open it up while the camera is rolling. We will show off the device, and any included accessories. This will not be a review show though, as the video reviews will remain a part of our other show, . In the first episode of Unboxing Live, we take a look at the Logitech Harmony 720 Advanced Universal Remote Control.

Phantom Lapboard Gear Live sister site Playfeed took note today that the once touted Phantom video game console has finally disappeared into the ether. Phantom Entertainment, aka Infinium Labs, is now taking pre-orders for a “Phantom Lapboard”, priced at $129.95.

Phantom is also apparently planning their broadband gaming service, no longer with the Phantom console albatross around its neck. This Phantom Game Service looks like it will need to be reengineered first, according to Phantom, to run as client software on personal computers operating Windows XP and Windows XP Media center operating systems. We’ll not hold our breath waiting for either the devices or online service to materialize.
