Panasonic Reveals World’s Smallest Speaker
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Misc. Tech, Peripherals, Portable Audio / Video,
Technology just keeps shrinking. Panasonic has created what they say is the world’s smallest micro-speaker. Their previous record holder was 2.5 mm, and at a mere 1.5 mm thickness and a size of 2 x 1 cm, they claim that the PED (Panasonic Electronic Device) loses no reduction of sound quality since its diaphragm is inserted on the top and bottom of its magnet, rather than making the magnet smaller. You will be able find them in cell phones and other portable devices in May 2007.

According to Robert Scoble, who had every intention of picking up a new iSight at a California Apple Store, apparently the peripheral is quite the popular gadget.
So, we went down to the Apple store and tried to buy an iSight. Turns out they are sold out. The salesperson said they can’t keep them in stock. A customer behind me was looking for one too and said that they are sold out everywhere.
This one is absolutely amazing to us, seeing as how just about every new Mac out there (save for the Mac Pro and Mac mini) comes with an embedded iSight. Of course, this could just mean that Apple is getting ready to refresh the iSight line - after all, it’s long overdue and could use an overhaul. At the very least, Apple needs to get the things to comply with EU standards.

Ultra Products Produces Stackable Peripherals
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: PC / Laptop, Peripherals,
In an “it’s about time” moment, Ultra Products has developed stackable peripherals. You can choose from a USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, a USB 2.0/FireWire hard drive enclosure, an eSATA/USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, a multi-purpose USB 2.0 hub, a USB 2.0 hub with an integrated memory card reader, and a power supply. All of them come in rather attractive vertical or horizontal models and feature spaces between them to prevent overheating. Although this sounds like a good idea in theory, it might require a heavy-duty steel computer desk to feel safe.

EDIT: See our video featuring the IOGear Nano Shield Germ-Free technology.
It’s a clean freak’s dream. IOGears just released its ergonomic Laser Mouse, which is coated with a Titanium dioxide and Silver nano-particle compound. This deactivates up to 90% of nasty germs to prevent their propagation on the mouse’s surface. Laser Mouse uses VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser), with the claim that it provides 30 times more tracking power than an optical sensor.
Available in wireless (with a 6-foot range), plug-in, and travel models, you won’t have to worry about germs at work either. Backed by a 3-year limited warranty, Laser Mouse is available for $39.95 and uses two AAA batteries (not included.)

Canon’s new PIXMA MP960 AIO (All-In-One) has a unique 7-color Chroma Life 100 ink system and the ability to print up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi on a variety of papers. It combines an easy-scroll wheel user interface with a 3.5-inch HD TFT screen.
“The Canon PIXMA MP960 model combines all of the best features from our PIXMA line of high quality printers and all-in-one devices, and is truly the ultimate home photo kiosk,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager at Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The AIO’s speed is 30 pages per minute for black and white documents and up to 22 pages per minute for color. TDK has developed the world’s largest capacity small form factor solid state drive. The drive is 20% smaller than a 2.5” laptop disk drive and includes all the driver chips necessary for ATA communications. A total of 16x16Gbit NAND flash chips cover the circuit board giving the drive a storage capacity of 32GB. That’s fairly impressive for a solid state drive in that form factor. The GBDriver RA5 NAND controller which provides the ATA interface to the flash, supports UDMA33 giving the drive a maximum transfer rate of 33.3MB/second. No details are given about the drives sustained data speeds however.
No released date for this device has been given. I fully expect to see similar form factor drives in the near future from Samsung, possibly utilizing their new Charge Trap Flash technology to compliment their already released 2.5” plug in laptop hard drive line. Begun the solid state drive war has!
