Sony Purchases Video Sharing Website Grouper.com
Posted by Yuan Zhao Categories: Corporate News, Movies,
The video sharing website Grouper has been purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment for $65m (£34m). The California-based website is the “second largest independent video community” currently on the world wide web, allowing users to upload, watch, and share video clips. Much of the appeal from sites like Grouper.com and others like YouTube stem from the fact that the offerings are available free of charge; however, many sites are now commercializing on their fame and Sony has said that grouper.com had potential for developing “ad-supported and premium-based services”.
While it is unlikely that any immediate changes will be made to the video website, paid services are almost guaranteed to be developed. Fortunately, the free sections of the site will keep on thriving as long as its community stays active.

HD DVD 2.0 Firmware Ready For Release
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies, Software,
HD DVD firmware is scheduled to be moving to version 2.0 sometime today. If you have your HD DVD player connected to the Internet, be prepared for the automatic download that will bring you support f or 24-bit/96kHz discrete audio with TrueHD 5.1 sound, something that Blu-Ray players still lack. We must say, we are impressed with the speed at which features are being added to the HD DVD players, as the 2.0 firmware upgrade is the fourth one to be pushed out in just as many months. Of course, there is also something to be said for launching a product that is feature-complete to begin with, but we won’t go there.

Photos of Netflix Headquarters

So, my boy Mike over at HackingNetflix went over to Netflix HQ for a tour and interview with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. While there, he also snapped a bunch of photos of both the outside and inside of the building. Based on the images, we are impressed. I mean, how many companies out there have conference rooms likened after The Matrix or Edward Scissorhands? We have a couple more pictures after the jump, but you can see them all in the HackingNetflix album on Zooomr.

Clash TV: Cult Classics on Your iPod
Posted by Nino Marchetti Categories: Internet, Movies, Portable Audio / Video,
This looks to be an interesting new podcasting network for feature-length vintage content. DeSoto Entertainment, based out of Florida, has started Clash TV, a “place for classic cult movies” which they created by “culling from a library of cult-classic “B” movies and held together with a short-skirted hostess named Zoe Cosmo.”
Feeling that “Clash TV fills the niche that Vampira, Elvira and Mystery Science Theatre 3000 held in decades past”, this new podcasting network makes available for download to iPods both “full -length films along-side so-called ‘Short Stacks’, micro-cinema versions of selected scenes from cult movies”. Their initial theme is Zombie Month, featuring cult classics like “Night of the Living Dead”, “Plan 9 From Outer Space” and “The Last Man on Earth”.
