Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech, Movies,
With all the holiday 2-fers and buy-1-get-1s this season, TiVo wants to join in on the festivities. They suggest you deck your hall with a free TiVo. It may not be the fanciest model on the block, but if you order a subscription plan, they will toss in an 80 hour, Series 2 Model TCD540080 for your viewing pleasure. The prices are $19.95 a month for 1 year, $14.95 for 2 years, and only $12.95 if you can commit to them for 3 years. You can even choose to prepay the entire amount. Just don’t terminate your service early or you will be expected to pay for the gift of TiVo.

Wal-mart Offers Download Bonuses With “Superman Returns” Purchase
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Movies,
Just as Time Warner has made their announcement that they will be offering digital downloads, Wal-mart has decided to offer one also with the purchase of “Superman Returns”, which it is selling for $19.96. Customers purchasing the movie can pay an extra $2.97 to play on PCs or laptops, $1.97 more for portable devices, and $3.97 for both. Because the portable format videos are encoded at a 320 x 240 resolution with an average bit rate of 500 kbps, the download will not be compatible with iPods. As a footnote, “Superman Returns” was produced and distributed by, you guessed it, Warner Bros.

Time Warner to Offer Download-to-Burn in 2007
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Movies,
Time Warner has announced that it will be offering download-to-burn DVD movies sometime next year. Although limited services such as Amazon Unbox, CinemaNow, and Movielink already exist, we figured it would just be a question of time before major moviemakers like Time Warner would get in on the action.
“Traditional media businesses are finding their way into the digital space without completely capsizing or cannibalizing their traditional media businesses,” said Richard Parsons, chief executive and chairman of Time Warner.
With this leap for humankind, we suspect other companies to follow suit, bringing us one step closer to never having to leave our computers.

2006 Holiday Gift Guide: Samsung BD-P1000
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies, Family, Techies,
Alright, so if you want Blu-Ray playback this holiday season without the hassle of trying to find a PS3, then you are gonna want to look at the Samsung BD-P1000. This player delivers on all the promises of the Blu-Ray format, including great shadow detail, vibrant colors, and deep blacks. The sound is uncompressed and goes up to 7.1, and is fantastic. The BD-P1000 will also upscale standard DVDs as well as digital images to a high definition progressive scan signal. The bad side? Load times when you first pop in a Blu-Ray movie are a bit slow, averaging about 30 seconds. Still, this one supports 1080p outpout and has both component and HDMI outs - and for $1,000, it’s probably cheaper than you will find the PLAYSTATION 3 selling for on eBay.
Price: $999 (Compare Prices)

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Movies, Music,
Sprint has unveiled their latest Motorola KRZR K1m, the RAZR V3m, and the SLVR L7c, which will enable customers to access the latest news, music, and entertainment at broadband-like speeds. On Sprint’s Power Vision EV-DO network, these models will be the only versions of these handsets to offer NFL Mobile, Sprint TV, Sprint Movies, Sprint Music, and Sprint Power View. That’s a heck of a lot of Sprinting, but it had better be for the cost of $199.99.

Blockbuster Allows Mailers to Drop Flix With Total Access
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Movies,
In an attempt to keep up with Netflix, Blockbuster has announced that it will now allow online rental users to return their movies in-store. Not only that, you can get a free in-store rental if you do so. Blockbuster offers differing Total Access plans that include $9.99 a month service plus a bonus movie coupon if you order one at a time, up to the $17.99 Total Access plan that allows you to order 3 simultaneously. Sign up now and you get a free trial membership for two weeks.
While Netflix has about 5.7 million subscribers, Blockbuster, who doesn’t like to come in second, had only about 1.5 million by the end of September. Granted they are making leaps and bounds in the attempt, but we’re going to wait until they offer a free pizza to go with our movie.

Eizo has announced their new line of Foris TVs, which they hope will be able to compete for your Christmas dollar. The SC20XD2, SC26XD2, and SC32XD2 have integrated analog/digital tuners, a 1366 x 768 resolution, 500 cd/m2 brightness, Ethernet technology, HDMI input, and a built-in DVD player.
The Foris’ come in black, blue, gray, brown, and red, and have a 176º viewing angle for the 20-inch and a 178º angle for the 26 and 32-inch models. The SC32XD2 also features a remote controlled moveable base. All three will be available in Japan in mid-November with a MSRP of ¥136,500 (~$1,197) for the SC20XD2, ¥189,000 (~$1,657) for the SC26XD2, and ¥225,000 (~$1,973) for the SC32XD2. They may not be pretty, but we like the idea of that remote base replacing our Elvis pic with those eyes that follow you around.
