Furutech Is Honored For deMag

Furutech has won a CES 2007 Best of Innovation award for its deMag, which demagnetizes LPs, CDs, DVDs, game and photo CDs, SACDs, and MDs. It also works on power cords and their connectors, as well as interconnects, to prevent distortion. The deMag measures 19 x 2.7× 18.5-inches and weighs 24 lbs.

The company claims that pigment added to plastic during the manufacturing process causes a minute amount of ferrous material which causes discs to become magnetized. At a price of $1,800.00, check with Furutech for availabilty of its Limited Edition deMag.

Sex Sells iHolic HTV-200 TV/PMP

Korean company iHolic has unveiled its HTV-200 DMB TV and PMP. The device features a 2.4-inch color TFT display, a SD-Card slot, USB 2.0, 512 MB/1 GB/2 GB internal memory options, MP4 video and MP3 audio support, and a JPG photo viewer. Getting touted with the sexiest of ad campaigns, the black HTV-200 has dimensions of 82 × 50 × 18.5 mm, weighs 76 g, and comes with a remote control and docking station for 188,000 WON on (~$203) iHolic’s website.

HP To Release Tablet With DVD Burner

HP tx1000 HP has a new tablet PC in town. The tx1000 convertible has a twistable widescreen LCD, built-in webcam, fingerprint reader, 12.1-inch touch screen, stereo speakers, twin mics, and dual headphone jacks. Windows Vista capable, it also features a removable LightScribe-compatible DVD burner and 5-in-1 flashcard reader. No word yet as to pricing or availability, but we hope that other companies will get the hint and begin adding some of these impressive features to their PCs and laptops as well.

DivX And The Future Of The Digital Home

Gear Live reader Davis Freeburg writes in:

As early adopters who’ve downloaded a DivX movie file know, their video file is second to none. There is no unreasonable wait, the quality is fantastic and it’s highly portable throughout the home. Born in the wild wild west of the P2P revolution, DivX has recently tried to shake their bad boy image for a more corporate look with a recent IPO. In an interview with Jordan Greenhall, DivX’s CEO, he discusses the impact that piracy has played on their negotations with the studios, the future of DivX on the Xbox 360, the PS3 and the Wii and his plans to bring media convergence into the digital home.

One of our favorite quotes from the piece is Jordan talking about what it could mean if Microsoft added DivX playback to the Xbox 360:

The pressure would certainly be on and then it’s a matter of the politics of each organization. I would argue that on a pure market competitive basis, if Microsoft stepped up and put DivX on the Xbox, they would have a significant competitive advantage and the onus would be on to reduce that advantage by licensing DivX as well, but that doesn’t imply however the Sony would have the forethought to do it.

I Am Your Nutcracker, Luke Skywalker

With only a couple of weeks left before Christmas, it’s difficult not to notice the extremely weird that you would never even consider buying the rest of the year. This Limited Edition Darth Vader Nutcracker, designed by Germany’s Steinbach is a case in point. The Lord of the Sith is 18 1/2-inches tall and weighs 4 lbs. He features his signature helmet, and vinyl cape and boots. He even sports a chest control unit, breathing apparatus, and light saber.

Darth is to be part of a Star Wars Collection (a Yoda nutcracker is also available) from our friends at Hammacher Schlemmer for a whopping $349.95. He comes with a lifetime guarantee, but for that price, he should at least have a working voicebox so that he can sound like James Earl Jones.

Xbox 360 Video Marketplace Reviewed

This one is from our friends over at Krunker, who decided to go through the horrific pain and agony (in our opinion) of downloading the huge video files available on the Xbox 360 Video Marketplace onto the miniscule Xbox 360 hard drive. They report back with their full review of the service, which they see as one of the beginnings of an Xbox 360 - Zune relationship:

The new Xbox Video Marketplace is a small step in the right direction for the Xbox 360. The initial release is underwhelming and some of the restrictions annoying, but the service introduction clearly lays out the infrastructure and ground work for a bigger service down the road - one that will most likely bridge us to the Zune as well.

A small step in the right direction - we agree there - but come on Microsoft. You guys created Windows Media Video, and it streams incredibly well on PCs. Why can’t you use the same technology on the Xbox 360? Don’t you think users would much rather have instant-on access to these shows and movies rather than having to wait hours for a download to complete? Contemplate that, please, and get back to us. Thanks.

Redbox, king of the automated DVD rental service, has announced that they will be placing their kiosks in McDonalds nationwide early next year. Order your Big Mac, pop $1.00 in the box, and you have an eventful evening of family togetherness. You can already find Redbox in such places as Walgreens, Stop and Shop, and Barnes and Noble, as well as some selected McDonalds.

Order online by zip code, and if your area is fortunate enough to have more than one of them around, drop the DVD off at another location if you wish. It remains to be seen if the minuscule price and policy of no late fee can compete with NetFlix and Blockbuster, but we are already planning a thematic evening with a couple of Quarter Pounders and the latest Sly Stallone vehicle.

Streamick Gathers Video To One Internet Site
