Outdoor Theatre

Cal Spas has dreamed up an Ultimate Outdoor Theatre for the ultra-rich. Featuring an anti-glare, anti-fog 63-inch LCD HDTV with surround sound, a Sirius satellite radio receiver, hook-ups for your fave game system, an iPod docking station, and a DVD/CD Player. It also contains a 5-burner barbecue grill, a wet bar with bar stools, 2 weatherproof recliners and 2 fire pits. We’re thinking that although Cal Spas has not yet released a price, if you have to ask what it costs, you probably cannot afford it.

Nielsen logoRatings company Nielsen recently completed a study on DVRs and mobile video viewing. The company focused on sample households who owned DVRs during three weeks in January and has come to these conclusions:

  • The majority of DVR viewers watch in groups.
  • Viewers will sit through more commercials when watching programs that are closer to the original air date.
  • Mobile viewing is still a mostly niche market.

At this point, only 19% of households own a mobile video device, whether it is a portable DVD player, video iPod, or video enabled cell phone. Those that utilize iTunes spend 95% of playback time in audio, rather than video.

MySpace logoMySpace has announced that as of today, it is providing free indexing to content producers who want to block users from uploading their copywritten videos. They will do the filtering by utilizing technology called Motional Media from Audio Magic, acoustic fingerprinting invented by David Stebbings. MySpace has already been doing this on a limited basis for the past year by blocking users from uploading audio or video files not authorized by the Universal Music Group.  It remains to be seen if this will finally shame Google and YouTube into taking up that same gauntlet.

Pirates DVDAfter a trial run a couple of months ago, Wal-mart has reached agreements with Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Sony, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox, and are now offering downloads of DVD Releases. They come in 640 x 480 resolution, 1,500 to 1,700 kbps rate for PC, X 240 resolution with 500 to 810 kbps average for portable devices, and a combination download for PC and portables that requires 30% more storage. Considering that the costs can be as much as $19.88, don’t work on iPods, and that the site is still in the beta stage, we think we will just stick to our unlimited Netflix. After all, you can only watch those pirates so many times.
