Home Theater Watch

Remember reading Dick Tracy comics as a kid, and being wowed by his tres-cool two-way radio watch? We’ve found something even more mind-blowing. It’s the aptly-named Home Theater Watch, which not only tells time, but with its 2GB of storage, can store a full-length feature film! The watch includes software to convert almost any video file—including AVI, MPEG and WMV —into the watch’s format. Send the files to the timepiece via USB and you’re set to view the season finale of “Shooting Sizemore” on an airplane, the subway,

or at a business conference

on the watch’s 1.5” screen. The Home Theater Watch even plays MP3’s, WMA’s and displays JPEG photos! If you’re single, we think this cool watch is a much better conversation starter than a cute puppy…and lots cheaper.  Available now for $149 USD.

Captain AmericaLet’s share five minutes of silence for the loss of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Shot on the steps of the Capitol building in yesterday’s edition of the Marvel comic, he was approximately 65 years old at the time of his death. While some sources have stated that perhaps they were making a political statement with CA’s demise, co-creator Jack Kirby feels that Captain America still lives in all of us. Besides, not only will there be a 5 part event to follow up, we hear there is a CA movie in the works. Just as Superman was resurrected from comic heaven, we’re hoping the Captain shall return, hopefully in classier garb.

ShoZu logoWe have just discovered ShoZu, a free service that allows you to send and receive audio and video without the aid of a computer. Subscribe to the Zucasts you like, i.e. music videos, pod casts, or celebrity photos, push a button, and there it is. No endless menus or Internet connection needed.  Currently there are 24 cell phone companies compatible with ShoZu and they claim more models are being added daily. Although the service is free, you will have to check with your network provider to see if you can get a flat rate fee, since this has the potential of being quite pricey.

Reno 911Tasers aren’t just for maiming anymore. In an effort to push last week’s release of “Reno 911!: Miami” movie, some of the cast showed up on Rachael Ray’s cooking show today to demonstrate just how they use the gadgets to heat up hot dogs. They also created a protein shake that they referred to as a “cop-achino.” We know that publicity departments are willing to go to great lengths to promote a flick, but we are hoping that people are intelligent enough not to try these tricks at home.

Titanic Home Theatre

If you think owning the Ultimate Outdoor Theatre is a little opulent, maybe you would prefer watching your movies in this Titanic Home Theatre. A collaboration between interior designer Donny Hackett of Casa Cinema Design and AV engineer Mike VanParys of PAVE (Professional Audio Video Engineering,) the room was created for a local Parade of Homes showcase in Tennessee.

The dome features 1,230 fiber optic lights for a night sky effect and acoustic panels have been placed around the room to account for its echo. The 20 x 4-foot theatre comes with a custom-made 120-inch Vidikron Model 30 ET projector screen and Tru Audio surround sound. The owners even added a Titanic replica to the mix. Casa Cinema Design had previously built a Mann’s Chinese Theatre Entertainment Center, which we are thinking could better sustain us during this year’s hurricane season.

Sony Blu-ray

Sony has decided to release a less expensive Blu-ray disc player early this summer. The BDP-S300 will retail for $599.00 and will still do everything that their BDP-S1 $999.00 player can do in an attempt to lure other customers into adopting their HD format. Toshiba has already released a rival HD DVD for $499.99. Fickle consumers, with the exception of heavy PS3 players, seem to be waiting to purchase either of them, hoping that the market will decide to choose one technology over another. We think Sony and Samsung (who also uses Blu-ray technology) may have their price points a bit too high considering you can now buy a HD DVD player for around $50.00.

Apple TV

Apple has decided to postpone the launch of Apple TV until mid-March because, as spokesperson Lynn Fox explains, “Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected.”

The gadget is designed to move digital content from a computer to a TV via a HDMI port or component video and audio ports. The company is counting on profits from those with puny monitors and gimongous plasma screens to download movies from its iTunes. Originally due out this month, the unit will retail for $299.00 and is compatible with both Mac and PC. We suppose that if they need to “wrap it up” a while longer, we can wait to unwrap it.

YouTube’s user ‘heavyarms 117’ took the Doc Adams’ altered lyrics of The Fray’s “How to Save a Life” and combined them with images and old quotes from Phil Harrison, a Blu-ray nudge, and even a reference to the Kill Zone games to come up with “How to Kill a Brand.” Kudos goes to the Internet genius that went into the making of this video that proves once again that sometimes the real talent in the world can be found when you are just hanging out and creating on the net.

Al Gore

Okay, so Al Gore didn’t personally win. But “AIT”’s (as the crew refers to it) director Davis Guggenheim brought the man who proclaims “he used to be the next president of the U.S.” up on the stage with him because he is truly the man behind the movie. Gore has always been interested in the subject of global warming and during his vice-presidential years used his term to draw attention to that and other environmental issues. This leads us to the political question: In the race against Queen Hillary and Prince Obama, can “The Goracle” become our next

King

President? We hope he will just continue to aid our planet.

JoostJoost has just announced that they have teamed with Viacom for distribution on their site. Under this agreement, spokesperson Brian Baumley told Gear Live that Viacom’s divisions of MTV, BET, and Paramount will now be a part of the web site that we first mentioned last month. Also included in the package will be Comedy Central, CMT, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Spike TV, VH1, and full length Paramount films of both classics and recent releases.

Still available in limited beta, the free Joost is accessible with only a broadband Internet connection, and offers broadcast-quality reception. Those of us without cable capability are thrilled with the news and can’t wait to be a part of Joost’s testing group. If you are interested in becoming a tester, visit Joost’s web site.
