Blockbuster/blu-rayBlockbuster has decided to rent only Blu-ray in 1,450 of its stores beginning next month when it expands its inventory. Renting both formats in 250 stores late last year, the company said that consumers preferred Blu-ray more than 70% of the time. It will continue to rent both types in those original stores as well as online. Gear Live was so curious about the decision that it studied the “facts” and came up with this:

  • More titles were available on Blu-ray than HD.
  • Several of the major studios, including Disney, were releasing exclusively Blu-ray titles.
  • Sony Playstation 3 already comes equipped with Blu-ray capability.
  • Releases of the popular Casino Royale, Spiderman, and Pirates of the Caribbean came out solely on Blu-ray.

We are still thinking that maybe a battle has been won, but certainly not the DVD war. We just don’t think that buying a new player is worth the price of admission just yet.

TamagotchiThe craze of Tamagotchis has never really waned since their 1997 debut. Now it seems they will be starring in their own movie, which will probably debut this December. Over 40 million have been sold from the original Bandai Company and the current Namco Bandai America. Distributed by Toho, the movie will feature several of the pets who befriend a human girl. We remember losing our Tamagotchis’ lives several times after forgetting about them, so at least these will live in celluloid forever.

7digital logo7digital has decided to challenge iTunes in a download music and video war. Newly relaunched, it promises lower prices and simpler technology. Established in 2004, the service offers tracks from indie labels as well as EMI, who also give the iTunes Store copyright-free protection. Many tunes will be sold for 50p (~$.98) in MP3 format and will include free online storage.

At this point, Apple iTunes owns about 80% of the market because of the preference of iPods in the world but Ben Drury, Managing Director, says that their company will not store personal details in files purchased from 7digital. iTunes utilizes DRM (Digital Rights Management) which contains full name, e-mail addy, and account information. Maybe saving that extra penny will not be worth the trouble, but we like the idea that another download site will not only protect our personal space but allow us to share our music with others.

The first full feature length movie Four Eyed Monsters has hit YouTube in an effort to raise funds for its creators. Spout will give Arin Crumley and Susan Buice a dollar to make another film if you subscribe to their site. The directors/writers have allowed the 71 minute film to be shown on YouTube for one week for its fundraising efforts and it has already raked in over $17,500.00. Take the time to see it, tell them what you think of their endeavor, give them a dollar, then let us know how we can impress someone enough to pay us to make movies.

MST3K

Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans will be delighted to know that its characters are back, almost. RiffTrax features MP3 downloads that you can synchronise with such notable films as Predator and the latest remake of Casino Royale. If you don’t own the film to match, Mike Nelson suggests that you head for Netflix or a download-for-fee site.

Nelson feels that, “People have been burned too many times in theaters. I’m feeling a little bit of optimism that movie fans are rejecting the same old films that Hollywood is telling them to like.”

Each download will cost you $2.99 but there are many samples on his site to get you back in the mood. He is joined by wife Bridget as well as Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy,) and Crow (Bill Corbett.) Nelson also plans on releasing special DVD editions of many of their old classic MST3Ks in the future.

OMS BX100Okoro has just released a new Windows Vista compatible BX series of digital entertainment players with dual HD-DVD and Blu-ray playability. Both models feature a huge storage capacity of 25-25GB (single layer) and 30-50GB (dual,) and have 1080p HD resolution and up to 8 channels of surround sound. They are also backward compatible with current CD/DVD formats.

The OMS-BX100 can handle 500GB of SATA storage at a price of $2,995.00, while the BX300 stores up to 1TB of information and can be yours for $3,595.00.
