Andru Simpsonized

First you could become an M&M, now as part of the hype for The Simpsons Movie next week, in conjunction with Burger King, you can be a Simpson. At SimpsonizeMe, you first upload a picture, which has to be at least a 640 x 480 color .jpeg. You can then add features such as facial characteristics and body types. The site is pretty busy though, so try it late night or constantly, the way we did. So what do you think? Does our illustrious leader make a better M&M or Simpsonite?

HD DVD

This past weekend we were about to watch a video from Universal when, wedged between the previews and the film, was a blatant commercial about the wonders of HD DVD, including the mention of how the discs will play on the Xbox. Curious about this newest battle in the HD vs.Blu-ray battle, we went to the website it suggested. Backing on the site is also coming from Warner Brothers, HBO, Paramount, HP, Intel, and Microsoft, and Toshiba is still offering lower priced players and 5 free DVDs with purchase. Things should really heat up in the next few months and we are not just referring to the planet’s temperature.

  MobiBOX MP415

MobiBOX’s PMP player has now morphed into the MP415 with a camera to allow recording of live footage and record/playback for both MP3 and MPEG4s. Designed especially for sports fanatics or budding James Bond types, the camera clips to your clothing and you can record just by the push of the button. With its 2GB memory card, it gives you about 2 hours recording time, with playback on its TFT 2.5-inch display and fold out stereo speakers. Plug it into your PC or laptop and it will function as a USB flash drive with an expandable 128MB, or connect it to a TV or DVD player for recording/playback with a VGA 640 x 480 and 30fps.

The MP415 has both the USB connection and an auto-sensing AV in/out port. It comes with earphones, A/V cable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a 3 pin charger/adapter, and a US cable. Pre-order from our buds at BB Tradesales, who buy the way, offer wholesale pricing for you entrepreneurial types, for an early August delivery for £179.00 (~$364.00.) We think that with this MobiBOX, we can finally capture the cops on video that are capturing us as we

HD-XA2

Toshiba has announced that its recent HD-DVD players’ promotional pricing will not return to its original cost. This is excellent news to those who have yet had occasion to purchase one and may serve as a hint for this year’s holiday shopping, which seems to arrive earlier every year. The company’s HD-D2 is only $279.99, the HD-A2 is now $299.99, the HD-A20 is $399.99, and if you want to splurge, their HD-XA2 has been rolled back to $799.99. Here’s to Toshiba, who obviously knows that a good deal is a good idea in the realm of mostly high-priced gadgets.

Total DVDHow resourceful of Warner Bros. to come up with their own solution to the war between HD and Blu-ray. They are thinking that a dual-sided disc is the answer, but have delayed its launch until early next year. This is because Warner Bros. and sister company Paramount are the only studios that embrace the Total concept at this time. The way we figure it, this gives them the upper edge by remaining neutral in the HD vs. Blu-ray war that seems to have no end in sight.

Squishees

Our props go out to clever marketing on behalf of The Simpsons Movie, which will be released July 27. Look around and perhaps you will notice that Apu’s Kwik-E-Mart is now in more than one location than Springfield. The stores were transformed from twelve 7-Elevens across the States, including Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago. KrustyOs, Buzz Cola, and Sprinklicious donuts abound, but don’t expect to find Duff Beer. 7-Elevens that have not been altered will still carry their own Slurpees to be sold as “WooHoo! Blue Vanilla” Squishees for the month.

Panasonic Blu-ray

Still on the fence about discs? The Blu-ray Disc Association has launched a promotion through September 30 that will offer five free movies with any Blu-ray player, including a Sony PlayStation 3. Similar to a deal that HD DVD ran with Toshiba earlier this year, 21 movie picks include such choices as “Pearl Harbor,” “The Italian Job,” “Kiss of the Dragon,” and one of our fave Brooks’ films, “Blazing Saddles.” The company also reminds you that if you purchase a Panasonic DMP-BD10A, you can receive another 5 films. Although we appreciate the offer, we still think we will stick to NetFlix for the time being and save our movie-catching budget for when the war is over.

SwapTreeAlthough swaptree has been in beta since 2004, it will finally launch next week on July 4. This service uses calculations that match you up with others based on that now widely known but little understood concept of algorithms. Before you run to the dictionary, it simply means that the service will narrow down items that are equal to those that you have and based on such results as location, objectively match them up. swaptree is free to the public, so you only need pay postage with Media Mail and a monthly fee of $1.00 to cover credit card transactions. Now might be the time to get into the back shelf of your closet and get rid all of those ugly ties that Uncle Peter keeps sending you for Christmas.
