If you own a TiVo, then you will soon be able to access Blockbuster’s OnDemand service. Compatible with broadband connected TiVo Series2, Series3, TiVo HD and TiVo HD XL DVRs, users will be allowed to rent and buy movies. Both companies will utilize cross-marketing and, as part of the deal, Blockbuster will sell TiVos on their site as well as in their stores. Plans to feature Netflix and Amazon will still continue, so it looks as though this is a win-win-win for TiVo. Expect the new service to begin in the second half of this year. Sign up with TiVo to be notified of the changeover.

Share Your Netflix Data With Facebook Connect

Recently launched, Facebook Connect allows users to share Netflix movie selections and ratings by clicking stars that will appear on their wall and friends’ News Feeds. Your friends can comment, add the movie to their queue or connect to Netflix to learn more about the movie. Of course you can configure the amount of titles and ratings shown by the privacy settings. To enroll, head over to Netflix via the link and click the button there.

Warner Bros. Archive DVD on Demand

Good news for fans of classic movies and TV. Warner Brothers will release some of them on DVD for the first time. The online service is known as the Warner Archive Collection and will create each one on demand when ordered for $19.95 apiece. The site includes titles such as “Al Capone,” “I Was a Communist for the FBI” and “Edison the Man.” Right now there are about 150 films, but more will be offered in the future including more recent films.

Samsung Movies Open for Business

Samsung is the latest company to try to compete with their new dedicated movie store. Samsung Movies are available to the company’s cell phones, PCs and laptops. About 500 movies and TV shows are in the starting lineup, with an additional 1,000 to be added by the summer. Initially the service will only be available in the UK and Germany. Rentals start at a price of $3.49 while film sales start at $6.99.

Netflix Reports 2 Million in Queues During Academy Awards

Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos of Netflix says that subscribers added almost 2 million movies to their queues during the 3+ hour Academy Awards. The top movie placed was Slumdog Millionaire, but more than 56,000 different titles were also entered. We can see that happening if you were watching during the show and computing at the same time. Not only would you want those titles, but you would be tempted by every movie made by the actors in the front row.

More Cable Media to Appear on Internet?

Several media companies are considering releasing programming on the Internet for paid subscribers. Such channels as HBO, MTV, Discovery, TLC, and Turner Broadcasting stations are included. Cable TV operators that pay networks a per-subscription fee each month have begun to complain that a lot of that content is free online. President of NBC UTG Jeff Gaspin said that it is important to “find ways to do business that protects that business model.” He added that it would involve a small fee or perhaps be a freebie. Should that be the case, it might mean that you should consider buying a better monitor as opposed to that new HDTV you were considering.

YouTube Testing Pay Per Download Videos

YouTube has begun testing a sub-set of their partners with a charge for download. Most of them are available for about $.99 but only as MP4 files. They can be purchased through Google Checkout. This may put an end to the problems that site has had with studios like Warner. If the program is successful, look for them to allow all of its partners to charge for movies and TV shows on the site.

Sci-fi fans who Skype/VoIP will love this new USB speakerphone that resembles a Star Trek communicator. Compatible with Windows XP/Vista and Tiger, it has a volume control and mute function with indicator and a separate USB sound controller with speakerphone and microphone. The phone also makes various comments such as “Transporter room, ready to beam up.” Aye, aye, Cap’n. We understand that the communicator will be at Dream Cheeky but has not materialized there as yet.
