DescriptionWe can tolerate Reality TV online. We can even suffer through TMZ TV, although we find it rather opportunistic. But when we heard about Online Nation that will premiere on The CW, we really started to wonder why anyone who has access to the Internet would want to see YouTube on the boob tube? There are plenty of opportunities to get your fifteen minutes of fame online, so why would we want to do the same in the real world?

We suspect that this is a chance for Network television to get in on the popularity of such sites that appeal especially to younger people who are the big spenders. In other words, another feeble attempt at making folks look merely foolish in the search for the big bucks. We do, however, applaud the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for awarding a special Emmy to Current TV and its partners Al Gore and Joel Hyatt for recognizing that there is more to the Internet than the exploits of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

GeoEye SearchAdventurer Steve Fosset and his plane still have not been recovered after about 2 weeks. A few organizations teamed up to find him with the use of a GeoEye satellite that is tracking the Nevada territory where he was last thought to be. Using Google Earth, you can get in on the search. You will have to download a KML file and cut and paste the coordinates in the “Fly To” box. Think of the ramifications for finding others missing that using this technology will be able to accomplish in the not so very distant future.

YouTube ClassPitzer College has begun to offer college credit for students that watch YouTube. Approximately 35 students attend the class where they watch videos and make comments about them. They are also encouraged to submit their own work. Professor Alexandra Juhasz, who set up the “Learning From YouTube” course, believes that one can learn about the “corporate-sponsored democratic media expression.” This sounds to us like one of those excuses not to have to issue and/or do real homework on the part of both the instructor and students, and suspect it will soon have the popularity of such classes as basket weaving and Dummy Math 101.

PrincePrince has asked YouTube to remove unauthorized clips of his recent concert in London. There have been more than 1,000 of them eliminated in the past week by Web Sheriff, a company he hired to do the dirty work. He is also trying to stop unauthorized filesharing and items sold on eBay without his permission. Managing director of the company John Giacobbi said, “Prince feels very strongly that people should remember his concerts as they were, not as some grainy mobile phone footage.”

Considering all the freebies he gave away to UKers, we think this is a decent request on his part. We have been to several concerts of late where security will no longer allow cameras to be taken inside and suspect it is a sign of more restrictions to come.

QuarterLifeMySpace has decided to enter the world of reality shows, at least that’s how it appears. Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, creators of “My So-Called Life,” are putting together QuarterLife on MySpaceTV. While we are not exactly sure of the content, the preview shows it to be a group of twentysomething friends that do odd things to each other on and with the net. We visited the site itself where we discovered that it may be an interactive show, or perhaps just a tie-in to get others to the second site. The show will make its debut on November 11 on MySpace and the day after on the QuarterLife site.

PetCell

Similar to the Hear Now that we introduced you to last fall, PetsMobility’s PetsCell is a waterproof GPS tracker that will notify you when your furry friend steps outside a pre-programmed area. In addition, the collar has a built-in cell phone so that you can chat with your pooch, or for others to contact you should your dog stray a little too far from home. The company also features PawTrax, an online system to track your pooch via the Internet that includes a sensor to keep track of the temperature surrounding your pet. Now we’re thinking, how far away will your pet be that you need to use that particular capability? Contact PetsMobility for price and availability.

Fergie's Hummer

You have another chance to own a piece of a celebrity. Fergie was so moved by the sentiment of Live Earth that she decided to sell her Hummer on eBay and donate all of the proceeds to Global Green. The auction is part of eBay’s attempt at helping to save the planet with its Giving Works program, which donates 10 to 100% of sellers’ proceeds to benefit environmental charities. The bidding war will go on until Sept. 14, with the current bid around $64,000. We were just thinking that with all the gas it takes to move a Hummer, perhaps a better idea would be to offer up a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

PanImages

The University of Washington and its Professor Oren Etzoni released PanImages at the recent Machine Translation Summit in Copenhagen. Instead of searching for photos by text that may not be recognizable, the system recognizes a string of letters in about 300 different languages and looks for them in Google and Flickr. In a recent test of the process, PanImages found 57 times more results than on an average search.

The procedure works by scanning machine readable wiktionaries. As an example, Etzioni said that if you type in the Zulu word for refrigerator (“ifriji’) you would get almost 500,000 results as opposed to 2 on available search engines. While we seem to be over-saturated with images by using English, it is a comfort to know that the Zulus will be able to find appliances with less of an effort now.

Bob Dylan

What a great Humpday treat! Bob Dylan, at the height of his youth, and he digs Gear Live. We admit that it is only a promo for his new album coming out October 1. Send e-grams to all your buds in “Subterranean Homesick Blues” style. The deluxe version of his “Greatest Songs Album” will feature almost 60 tunes from the musical poet with 10 limited edition postcards, mini vinyl replica artwork, and a booklet with images and liner notes. Until his album becomes available, remember to “get dressed, get blessed, try to be a success.”
