CBS Utilizes YouTube for Upping Viewers

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Internet,

CBS has announced that since their 22,000 subscribers have begun seeing clips on YouTube, they are clamoring for more. The network says that the 300 uploaded clips have averaged 857,000 views per day for a total of 29.2 million views for the month. So far, airings of “The Late Show With David Letterman” clips have gone up 5% (200,000), while “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” is up 7% (or 100,000 viewers.) At that rate, it won’t be long before other networks/channels decide uploading to YouTube is a good thing. Check out the top fifteen clips on CBS.

Advanced bots aren’t just for adults these days. Unveiled at Korea’s Next Generation Computing Show 2006, IZI Robotic’s CUBO is a homebot designed for educational and entertainment purposes. When your kidlet clicks an icon in a book, the robot automatically recognizes it through its OID (Optimal Identification Device) and reads it to them. He can also monitor your home, give news and weather updates, and handles scheduling, e-mail, and wake-up calls. At dimensions of 225 x 150 x 150 mm and a weight of 1.5 kg, we just wish CUBO would get rid of that monster hiding in the closet.

MuveeMix Does the Editing for You

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Movies, Music, Videos,
MuveeMix is a new site that makes it possible to upload your MP3s and videos, then connect the two without doing any of your own editing. The service automatically cuts picture or video highlights to the beat of the music, and even adds other themed artistic elements. You simply register at the site, upload your info, then combine your tacky home movies from your last vacation with a song such as “Mad World.” Display it in their gallery or export to myspace or other sites of your choosing. They will keep up to 10 muvees active for one year.
Upgrade to a Bumper account for $60.00 a year and get 5 extra styles (for a total of 10.) Just don’t be disappointed if no one shows up for the premiere.

The Fantastic 4 is not just a quartet of superheroes. This wearable PC, which debuted at Korea’s Next Generation Computing Show 2006 this past weekend, may look cool but its application is a bit strange. You wear it like sunglasses and when you want to record something you simply draw it in the air. The PC detects the movement of your fingertip, makes it appear on the HMD, and is stored through a wireless receiver module to a CPU. We think we will just stick to our Ray Bans and laptop.

NBC Nightly News Now Available on Free Podcast

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Internet,
Last night on NBC, news anchor Brian Williams announced that its “Nightly News” and “Meet the Press” will be available on free video podcasts through MSNBC or iTunes. Although they have already been streaming some news on MSNBC.com, the entire program is now downloadable at 10:00 p.m. EST and “Meet The Press” at 1 p.m. EST, both after their airings on the West Coast.
Rival ABC offers their “World News Now” as a 15-minute daily newscast while CBS simulcasts its “Evening News” on the Web. If this trend continues, think of spending your hard-earned cash on a larger monitor instead of that new plasma screen.

Youmail: Individual Personalized Voicemail Messages

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,
Gear Live reader “Emergency Trap” sent this in, letting us know how impressed he is with the free YouMail voicemail replacement service - thanks…er…Trap!:
I can tell Youmail is going to take off. It’s currently in a free Beta stage that couldn’t be more attractive. If you love your cell phone, Youmail is a fun customizable voice mail feature that adds another level of uniqueness to your phone.
At it’s core, Youmail is a service that re-routes your standard voice mail to their service which lets you assign multiple voice mail messages to specific numbers. It’s like assigning your favorite Barry Manilow song to your honey’s phone number. Their service is free and works with any cell phone, but they send you a TXT whenever someone leaves a message. You’ll need to check with your service plan to see how text messages are handled. You can set a default voice mail for all unknown calls, so don’t worry, your professional image isn’t at stake. One other feature offered is the “ditch mail” feature. They claim that if you get a call from someone you’d rather never hear from again, you can send a numeric code which will “give them a ditch mail, and you’ll never here from that person again.” You can access, record, delete, and manage messages from their site. Alternatively, you can choose to record and assign a new custom email from your phone.
I’ve signed up and found the voice interface to be clear and helpful. I’ve listened to a couple messages my friends left me, and they sound just as if I were using my service providers voice mail service. As of this writing, I haven’t gotten feedback from them on how my custom voice mail messages sound, but I listened to them on my computer and they sound fine-virtually indistinguishable from my service provider. I haven’t tried the ditch mail feature, and am a bit confused by it. I started wondering if they totally block that number or if they simply send some kind of default message stating that I don’t want to hear from them again. I’m counting on the former, but I have a feeling it won’t work for unavailable calls-which would really be great to stop telemarketers.
I don’t know how long this service will stay free. I’ll be surprised if they don’t start charging. The big service providers are already charging extra for customized ring backs, and other extra services. If it does stay free, then kudos to Youmail.
We are going to play with this service for a few days. If we are impressed enough, we will do a video review over on The Bleeding Edge. If you try it, let us know what you think.

While we were out shopping for bling, we also discovered Jellyfish.com, the Internet’s version of HSN. This search agent offers a limited Smack Shopping Deal of the day, which goes on sale Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. ET. Its price decreases in the form of a cash back system until it is either sold out or reaches 100% and is given away. Although you don’t know how many units are left, you make the choice of waiting for the price to drop or grab it before it’s sold out. Today’s product, the Nintendo DS Lite, started at $129.99 for 35 units, went up to 43.54% off, and resulted in a price of $56.60. As Jellyfish puts it, “Don’t wait too long buddy. Because once it’s gone, it’s gone.”

You just have to have some of that bling that Paris has. Instead of Googling endlessly for it, Riya has launched Like.com, a visual search engine that allows you to click on a photo of an item you want and find it without words. They do this with technology that creates a digital signature that describes the photo’s content. You then narrow it down by details such as price, color, material, etc.
Currently Like.com is focusing on jewelry, handbags, shoes, and watches, and plans to expand to include clothing and what they refer to as “aesthetically oriented product categories.” We took it for a test run and came up with thousands of items to choose from, but we think the concept is right on.
