Save the Endangered with Free Wildlife Ringtones

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Internet, Science,
Everybody wants to get in on the ringtone bandwagon, including New Mexico’s Center for Biological Diversity. The center is hoping that having a Mexican Spotted owl let you know you have received a call will draw attention to its being an endangered species. Free to download, 24,000 activists have already done just that at CBD’s web site.
Studies have shown that by 2008, up to 30% of wireless users are likely to forgo their land lines in favor of cell phones with Internet capability. That will be one heck of a demonstration. It’s certainly enough to draw attention to a person whose current ringtones come from her cat’s whining when she wants to play.

Apple TV Launch Delayed

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Internet, Movies, Portable Audio / Video,

Apple has decided to postpone the launch of Apple TV until mid-March because, as spokesperson Lynn Fox explains, “Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected.”
The gadget is designed to move digital content from a computer to a TV via a HDMI port or component video and audio ports. The company is counting on profits from those with puny monitors and gimongous plasma screens to download movies from its iTunes. Originally due out this month, the unit will retail for $299.00 and is compatible with both Mac and PC. We suppose that if they need to “wrap it up” a while longer, we can wait to unwrap it.

Sony: How to Kill a Brand

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Movies, Music, Video Games, Videos,
YouTube’s user ‘heavyarms 117’ took the Doc Adams’ altered lyrics of The Fray’s “How to Save a Life” and combined them with images and old quotes from Phil Harrison, a Blu-ray nudge, and even a reference to the Kill Zone games to come up with “How to Kill a Brand.” Kudos goes to the Internet genius that went into the making of this video that proves once again that sometimes the real talent in the world can be found when you are just hanging out and creating on the net.

RIAA Cracks Down on Illegal Music Downloads

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Music,

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has decided to aggressively pursue students who illegally download from the music industry. The only problem is that colleges aren’t really listening. The top five schools targeted are Purdue, and the Universities of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ohio, Tennessee and South Carolina, since they have gotten more than 1,000 complaints over this past school year. Add to that to almost 15,000 total collegians, an amount that has tripled since last year.
The RIAA wants each of the colleges to dispense discipline on their own campuses, which can vary from e-mail warnings to a semester of suspension. Most of the downloads come from the services of AresWarez, BitTorrent, eDonkey and other programs that operate on Gnutella and FastTrack.
Purdue received 1,068 complaints this year as opposed to 37 in 2006, but say they rarely contact offenders because it is simply too much bother and those caught rarely repeat their mini-crime.

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time again and in honor of the occasion, we have made it our eBay deal of the week. Normally the cookies go for $4.00 a box, but we found a case of 12 boxes of trefoils at the low price of $25.00, which makes it a little over $2.00 each. If you figure in the shipping cost and realize that it’s Mom who is doing the selling, we think we will just mooch a couple of Tagalongs or Samoas from the cubicle next door.

You Know You’re Addicted to E-mail if…

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Misc. Tech,
Marsha Egan, an expert on the subject of time management, has devised a system for those with e-mail addiction. She and her company, Egan Email Solutions carry e-books, CDs posters, screen savers and a bi-weekly ezine for businesses or individuals. Our favorite program, however, is a 12-step cure for e-diction.
One of the questions used to figure out if you are a candidate for her program is “Do you e-mail the person next to you at work rather than just talking to him/her?” If your answer is “yes” (and we are pretty sure it is,) then sign up for her detox. She will send you 1 step a day for a $36.00 via, you guessed it, your e-mail.

Google Earth Tracks Round-The-World Flight Simulator Race

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Google, Internet, Transportation, Video Games,

Where do computer geeks go when it’s vacation time? They participate in a week long Round-The-World Flight Simulator Race. Teams from AVSim, FlightSim, and Sim-Outhouse race around the world by following specific rules and conditions given to them 24 hours in advance. The race, which began at 10:00 a.m. last Friday, allows the teams to choose their own planes, has a route requirement, features bonus airports, and emergency techniques in case of a plane crash.
If you would like to track the participants’ competition this week, you can watch it on Google Earth, check for updates, and even listen in on the banter between the teams. This could start a new trend in vacations, and we’re thinking that the holodeck from Star Trek might be the next logical step.
