Last Friday night, the creative forces behind MySpace, Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, gave a rare interview on Nightline to promote their new addition to their site, a “Presidential Town Hall,” which will begin this fall. MySpace will host hour-long meetings on college campuses which will be webcast on the site. Viewers can ask questions while watching the events or register to vote if they become democratically fervent when watching the candidates. As of now, each of the them has a MySpace page, which means that as of 2008, our new prez will have one. We’re not sure that we want to add them to our friends list just yet.

Encyclopedia of Life Collects All Living Creatures on One Site

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Science, Videos,
For the first time, all 1.8 million earthly species, including those recently discovered, will become available for scientists, students, and the rest of us common folk. Conceptualized by 2007 TED Winner E. O. Wilson, a consortium of educational and scientific institutions, including NASA, is creating an evolving Encyclopedia of Life (EOL,) an online database to help find out about and protect our planet.
Included in the online tome will be images, sound, video, location maps, and a multitude of information. Although individual pages were created in the ‘90s, in January the project received enough funding to research and categorize more scientific data. The EOL should be completed within the next ten years, unless another million species are discovered first.

Cheeseheads Reach Across the Pond

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Internet, Misc. Tech, Videos,
Don’t ask us to explain it, but apparently people love watching cheese mature. Cheddarvision made its debut in December, and has had more than 1.2 million hits. What is the big deal? A 23-kilogram (~50 lbs.) slab of the dairy product is sitting in a dark storage barn in Westcombe, London, aging as a webcam keeps track of the event. It gets adjusted once a week to keep it’s shape. It also has its own MySpace with almost 860 “friends” and a time lapse of its first 3 months on YouTube.
“People from all over the world are e-mailing us about the cheese. Somebody has written lots of songs about it. It has been invited to a wedding. We’ve had post cards sent to it,” said its owner Tom Calvar.
Mr. Calvar, how about you get in touch and we can discuss the future of your cheese with some of those rabid eBay fans?

PaPeRo-mini Connects People to the Internet, Robo-Style

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop,
NEC has recently launched its PaPeRo-mini, which may be a go-between to connect us to our PC in a manner they claim to be super user-friendly. The diminutive bot features speech recognition and control, face recognition, CG indication, and networking conversation. Now being tested, its results will be known at the ROBOMEC 2007 from May 10 to 12 in Akita, Japan. We were wondering if we could get the PaPeRo-mini to a test of doing our work, just in case we have to take a
day off
sick day next week.

Greet Your Buds with Yodio

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Smartphones, Internet, Music,

This appears to be the latest idea in spam just by using your cell phone. With Yodio (created out of the terms “you” and “audio,”) you record an MP3 audio tag line on your phone, call the website and post it, add images and captions, and send it to unsuspecting folks’ e-mail addys or blogs. If you just want to use the beta service to wish your parental unit a happy Mother’s Day in a 2 minutes or less e-card, Yodio is free, but if you want to create a mini-commercial or tour you set a price, and Yodio will pay you royalties.
The only problem here is that you can only use the tool on their site and must link to it to see your work of art. To get you started, the site has a practice run and is now offering a $10.00 reward if you can get five people to view your creation.

Firefox browser, chances are you know about all the zillions of “add-ons” they offer, which you can use to tailor the browser to your online needs, from real-time weather reports to customized searches. Now Firefox has teamed with Ebay, creating an add-on that informs you—also in real-time—about your current bids, items being sold, and most importantly, when you’ve been outbid. Never blow a coveted auction again, say for a certain Walt Disney lunch box from our cherished childhood. Interested?

Classic video game fans, rejoice! GameTap.com, the website where you can play hundreds of old-school video games for a $10 monthly fee, will start offering a handful of games for free, starting next month. The catch? You must sit through a video commercial first, and there will be an ad on the side of the screen during gameplay. Sounds easy enough, and the free titles are a great bunch, including Space Invaders, Rampage, Metal Slug, Joust (woo hoo!) and a Tomb Raider game. Just wish the site offered Berzerk, which we’d so pay for…

Last Friday, one of the General Lee Muscle Cars from the TV show “Dukes of Hazard” was sold on eBay Motors. Claiming to be John Schneider’s personal vehicle and modified with a macho 725 Hemi, it netted $9,900,500.00. Apparently 19 of these vehicles exist, two kept by Warner Brothers, while the others are privately owned.
While checking out the facts, we found another of the collection that is up for sale through tomorrow, so if you are truly disappointed that you couldn’t bid on the first one, take a shot at this one that is going for merely $150,000.00.

Pick up A Date on Your Commute Home

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Transportation,
You are stuck in rush hour traffic and see the guy/gal of your dreams. You make eye contact just as the conglomerate of cars disperses and you have to wake up to both the driving and the fact that your possible soulmate has taken an off-ramp. But wait, your partner to-be has a Flirting in Traffic Decal on the back of his/her car. Write it down, head to the website, sign up for free, enter the code, and there is your possible love of your life with details you couldn’t get in the hubbub of all that traffic.
Started in Philly last year, the dating site features about 15,000 subjects, although about 2/3 so far are male. Just in case you don’t drive, Flirting is planning on attacking college campuses next, where you can acquire said sticker, attach it to your back pack, and await communication from your Prince Charming/Cinderella.
