Rosie the Robot Becomes Reality

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,

More than 40 Robotics and Information Technology professors at the University of Tokyo and 4 year’s worth of work have produced this kitchen bot that can pour you a cup of coffee and clean up afterwords. They say one of the positive aspects of robots is that you do not have to be concerned with politeness as you would with humans. The team is hoping that they can apply this basic technology not only to households, but hospitals as well. We don’t care what it will ultimately cost. We are just grateful that Rosie the Robot from “The Jetsons” will soon become a reality.

Lose Weight With Traineo Support

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Internet, Science,
Traineo has come up with a diet plan that gives you motivation from your closest friends or family members. The free service features support with software that enables your 4 buds of choice to receive weekly e-mails that track your progress. You can also meet others, count your calorie intake, keep stats on your own page, and get a daily diet training rating. We’re thinking that had we joined the service, we could have burned an extra 24 calories just by letting you know about it.

DishMaker Means Never Having to Clean Your Plate

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,
Yesterday we introduced you to an artist who designed a machine to toss beer. Today we have found Leonardo Obonanni, researcher at MIT’s Medialab, designer, and artist, who has created the DishMaker. Beginning with an acrylic disc, his gadget can create plates and different sizes of bowls and cups out of the same material. When you finish your meal, you simply melt it back to its original shape so that it can be recycled when you need another kitchen vessel. Obonanni claims the same disc can be recycled up to 100 times. We assume that you have to actually rinse it first, but imagine the colorful designs you can create out of pizza crust and orange peel.

Beer Launching Fridge Forgoes Need to Refill

Robotic Beer Launching Refrigerator
With a spark of creativity, or maybe just out of plain laziness, couch potato John Cornwell has managed to invent a gadget that can aim and toss him a beer from his automated, remote controlled, mini-fridge. Directed by keyless entry, and with a capacity to hold 10 brews and 14 more in reserve, he can keep a case of the brew and not have to get up between football quarters. We’re hoping that John can also create a device that can toss us another can of Pringles.

Spyke Alerts You to Home Intrusion

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, CES 2007, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science, Toys, Wireless / WiFi,
Meccano’s foot tall, remote controlled Spyke is not exactly the scariest security guard we have seen, but at least he is trying. Unveiled at the CES 2007, he will feed you images via his live webcam feed from a Wi-Fi router. He can also receive and play streamed music through his built in speakers, and is Skype capable.
One of the bot’s best attributes is that when his batteries run low, he will head for his charging station. Sounding like a cross between R2D2 and a toy machine gun, Spyke is being sold under the Erector brand in the U.S. and can be yours for £199.95 (~$391.00) this April.

Linux Users Will Love this Penguin Shower Radio

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Smart Home, Music, Toys,

Penguins. What’s not to love? They’re cute, endearing, unique—and box office gold, baby! Because Linux users appreciate the power of the penguin, we think they’ll love this Penguin Shower Radio, bearing more than a passing resemblance to Tux, the Linux mascot. This little guy plays AM/FM, has suction cups for wall-mounting, and has—for reasons we’re still figuring out—an alarm button! We’re also not sure if the radio is as waterproof as its living, breathing counterpart, so use with caution. Takes 3AA batteries and retails for $30 USD, quite reasonable for such an adorable bathing companion.

If you already own an R2D2 droid, you really should get him a companion wastebasket. He stands 24-inches high and if you step on his center “foot” his head pops up for your trash. Constructed of vinyl, his interior can is removable for cleaning. Only a Limited Edition with a price of $149.00, Think Geek says they have already sold out but are “scrambling to see if we can somehow magically (or by using the force) get more.” Maybe we can breed the droid and projector and get some apartment-sized R2s.

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time again and in honor of the occasion, we have made it our eBay deal of the week. Normally the cookies go for $4.00 a box, but we found a case of 12 boxes of trefoils at the low price of $25.00, which makes it a little over $2.00 each. If you figure in the shipping cost and realize that it’s Mom who is doing the selling, we think we will just mooch a couple of Tagalongs or Samoas from the cubicle next door.

ErgoChair Helps Cure Slouching

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

There are scads of ergonomical products on the market and we decided to add this one to the “It looks good, but does it really work?” category. Dr. Rider’s Ergochair promises relief from back pains and leg cramps even if you slouch. Easy to assemble, the chair’s cushion can be inflated or deflated for your height, or even removed for stretching or exercising use. The company claims that you can improve your posture in as little as one week. Available online for $159.99, we’re thinking that the lady pictured here looks like she has just laid an industrial egg.
