Beer Fridge Moves Up From Metacafe to Letterman

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, Science,

Last month we told you about the wonders of the beer-launching refrigerator that we discovered, and tonight its inventor, John Cornwell, will be making an appearance on David Letterman’s “Late Show.” Posted on Metacafe, the ingenious gadget that tosses you an icy cold brew on demand has received over a million hits and earned its creator over $6,000.00 in revenue. We believe that this is proof positive that you can claim your 15 minutes of fame just by posting your ideas on the Internet. Of course, John’s being an award-winning computer and robotics engineer at Duke University didn’t hurt his chances either.

Raytron has given birth to Chapit, a diminutive bot that will take care of all the menial tasks that you would rather not have to perform. He can turn on electric lights, appliances, and electronic devices, and has the capacity to recognize whether you are a man woman or child, (although we are not sure that should be an issue.) Pre-programmed with about 100 words, the bot can learn up to 10,000 total and hooks up to your PC for remote control. Personally, we think the little guy is cute, but only slightly more useful than our Furby.

LG is revealing its new line of cyclonic vacuum cleaners with a maximum sucking power of 2.000 W. The Kompressor’s system creates blocks of dirt inside so that up to 4 times the amount of a standard vacuum can be stored before it needs emptying. It also features a washable air filter that LG claims traps 999.5% of dust particles. The Kompressor will be available in April for 299 euros (~$397.00.) Between the Roomba and the NASCAR Trac Vac, we were wondering just why so many companies are designing such innovative vacuums when they could be spending their time finding a way to get us out of that nasty chore completely? We’ll let you know when the first self-vacuuming carpet is born.

If you’re
still
a fan of “The Simpsons”, there is no better way to wake up than with Homer Simpson, sporting a beer and a smile. Which is why the Simpsons Jukebox is aj must have: it’s an AM/FM clock radio with a snooze functions, buzzer, LED radio display and mono speakers. We’re a little suspicious the jukebox may have been stolen from Moe’s Tavern, but if you don’t tell anyone, neither will we. Currently available for $36 USD.

Even more fun than playing with your food may be to chew it with pizazz. Wrigley is unveiling a new designer, sugar-free gum this summer aimed at the teen set which they have named simply “5.” The gum comes in flavors of Rain (spearmint,) Cobalt (peppermint,) and Flare (cinnamon.) The company claims, “Teens, who are constantly seeking opportunities to experience something out of the ordinary, are also the most frequent gum chewers of any age group and account for one-third of all gum chewed in the U.S.”
Available in a 15-stick envelope, we’re thinking that the updated packaging and distinctive name are just disguising the fact that this is still just gum and we will stick to our Altoids when we want extra zing in our mouths.

Voyager Flat Available to Affluent Trekkers

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

Tony Alleyne designed a Star Trek-themed apartment based on the Starship Enterprise. After spending more than £30,000 (~US $58,000.00) to build it in England, he decided to sell it for £1.25 million (~$2.5 million). With no interest from bidders, he then upgraded it to a Voyager and changed the price to £500,000 (~$969,000.00.) Apparently the poor guy is still having no luck in finding a buyer, so if you are an eBay master you might want to handle the sale for him. Then again, if you are an conniving Trekker, maybe you can just trade for your transporter credits.

Write a Blook and Win Big Bucks

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Smart Home, Internet,
Unless you are endorsed by Oprah, chances are these days that if you write a book there is so much competition that you may have to publish it yourself. That can be a bit pricey, as some of us at Gear Live can attest. So it’s a welcome relief to find sites such as Lulu who award prizes to “blooks” that have gone from blogs to the real world. The prize has been offerred to encourage raw talent which is starting to emerge on the Internet.
Technorati, estimates that about 175,000 new blogs are created every day. Last year’s winner “Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously,” has already sold over 100,000 copies and will soon become a film. If you would like to check out this year’s nominees or get some inside info on how to make it big in a bloggy world (to the tune of up to $10,000,) visit Lulu.
