XMB Sony recently released the 3.00 firmware update for the PSP, and the main feature added is support for “Remote Play” on the Playstation 3. This firmware will allow gamers to download Playstation 1 games to the PSP through the Playstation 3 online store, but it also adds media streaming to the PSP. Game|Life took a quick pass at the new firmware, and highlighted some of the features implemented. Gamers can access the PS3 Cross Media Bar and view movies, pictures, and music from the hard drive of the PS3, or other external media devices.

Internet play is not supported at this point; that feature may be added later, but for now, the connection is made via an ad-hoc wireless network connection. PS3 game playing isn’t functional either, and the ad-hoc connection can not be used as a wireless access point. Still, it seems like the feature does have potential, and when PS1 games become available it will be interesting to see how well the games play in emulation.

Wii Some new Nintendo Wii owners have had problems with their consoles after downloading Nintendo’s firmware updates through the Wii Connect24 service. After applying one of the updates, the next time the console tries to connect the user will get an 110213 error. Users with this error will need to have Nintendo replace the console, through one of two options. First, gamers can have Nintendo ship a replacement immediately with a hold on their credit card. If the broken console is received within 21 days, there will be no charge. Second, gamers can opt to send their console in, and Nintendo will ship a replacement when the old console is received. This method does not require a credit card, but gamers may be without a Wii for several days while the consoles are shipped. Hopefully this glitch is not widespread, but it is unclear exactly what percentage of consoles have been affected.

Backwards Compatibility Reports have been circulating about Sony’s problems with backwards compatibility with the Playstation 3, based largely around the Japanese compatibility database. Now, the US database is online, and gamers can confirm compatibility for their own titles. Some of the titles affected include some versions of Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid: Subsistence, and some of the games in the Final Fantasy series, particularly the Playstation 1 versions and Final Fantasy XI, which requires the Playstation 2 HDD. And, for those who really want to know, Barbie Horse Adventures has no issues reported at this time.

Playstation 3 FrontThe Playstation 3 finally launched in the United States on Friday and gamers and scalpers were finally able to get their hands on the hardware. The limited supply of consoles meant that demand was driven to frenzied levels, surpassing the madness of last year’s Xbox 360 launch. One thing seems clear, though; it seems like very few retailers learned their lesson last year, and a confluence of events led this launch to be worse in many ways.

More after the jump.

PS3 LineOh sure, we may have laughed at those poor bastards waiting in the cold for Sony’s latest - cold, hungry, sheltered from the elements only by their tents and the overhang of the Wal-Mart’s entrance. But they’re the ones laughing now - turns out, via a recent study, that the average price of a pre-sold PS3 auctioned on eBay was hovering around $2600. In recent weeks, the price has dropped to around $2000, but there obviously are still a lot of rich, impatient gamers out there looking to get their hands on this console ASAP.

So maybe it WAS worth it to quit your job and wait in line for a week - I know I don’t make $2,000 in that amount of time. Congratulations Mr. Waiting Out In the Cold for Electronics Guy… this Bud’s for you.

Joytech Wii Charging Cradle

Joytech announced yesterday that they will be producing a variety of peripherals for Nintendo’s new Wii gaming console. Most of the new peripherals fall into the “big hunk o plastic” category, including a tennis racket-shaped attachment for tennis games, “protective” controller gloves, and a white steering wheel attachment similar to what will be included on Ubisoft’s GT Pro Series.

The one product of note, pictured above, is a Wii controller docking/recharging station which will feature a pop-in battery pack that charges over the console’s USB port. Now that would seem to be some great functionality - no extra power cords, plus a nifty looking stand for your Wiimotes. Nice work on that one, Joytech!

Jack Tretton Sony VP Jack Tretton recently spoke with Game|Life about the upcoming Playstation 3 launch, and some of the issues that have surfaced. Tretton basically dismisses the backwords compatibility issues; he claims that despite issues with 200 games, with over 8000 games in the product compatibility database, this represents a high level of compatibility. Of course, since a number of these games are fairly high profile releases for the Playstation 3, including Gran Turismo 4, this probably does little to sooth the average gamer. Tretton also discusses the PS3 supply chain; gamers could see shortages last until Spring if demand holds up and the supply lines don’t improve. Also briefly touched on were the recent occurrences of violence among consumers waiting for the PS3 and the image scaling issues; Tretton essentially sidestepped the questions.

PS3 Hardware With less than 48 hours remaining until the PS3 launch, you’d better be thinking hard about how you’re going to get your grubby little hands all over its shiny plastic exterior. And with only 400,000  200,000

150,000 units expected to make it state-side, you’re going to have lots of competition.

Enter GameDaily’s “Top 10 Tips for Scoring a Playstation 3” - your source for last-ditch efforts at getting a PS3 when all of your pre-ordering schemes have failed. Our favorite? “Move to Wyoming”, one of the nation’s least populated states. We’re going to guess this one was in jest - I’d bet that Wyoming has somewhere around 0 PS3 units dedicated to its stores.

Playstation 3 It looks like gamers with HDTV sets that don’t support 720p natively may have to deal with lower resolution gaming on the Playstation 3, rather than getting scaled content. IGN is reporting that unless a game specifically supports 1080i as an output mode, 720p content will not be scaled to that resolution, and will instead be sent as a 480p signal. Titles affected include Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and Need for Speed: Carbon. It is unclear whether this is a restriction in the firmware of the console or a limitation of Sony’s hardware, but Microsoft’s Xbox 360 handles this with an internal scaler. At any rate, if this issue is not fixed, a number of consumers with older HDTV sets won’t be able to get the full benefits of the Playstation 3.
