Nokia Denies Android Smartphone Development
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors, Software,

Sorry to all you hopefuls out there, but Nokia won’t be releasing an Android-based smartphone later this year. Where would such a thought come from, you ask? Well, earlier this morning, The Guardian said it would happen, and that a Nokia Android phone would be announced in September. Seemed odd, since Nokia is the full owner of the Symbian OS, but stranger things have happened. However, soon after the article was posted, Nokia show it down anywhere they could, including on Twitter:
“re: Nokia’s rumored Android phone and you can quote me on this: We (Nokia) are NOT making an Android smartphone. Symbian is our platform…”
While we take most denials with a grain of salt, we believe them. At ease, Symbian fanatics.

We’ve already told you about the iPhone 3GS unlock that is currently available, but the iPhone Dev Team also has their “official” iPhone 3GS jailbreak and unlock ready, but they aren’t releasing it until Apple releases iPhone OS 3.1. However, they did put out a video showing how it works, which you can watch above. Looks painless.
How many of you are waiting for the Dev Team to release their unlock mechanism before unlocking your iPhone 3GS?

iPhone 3GS Unlocked and Jailbroken
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Mods / Hacks, Software,
The iPhone 3GS can finally be unlocked and jailbroken. This past Friday, George Hotz released his Purplera1n iPhone 3GS jailbreak tool. Of course, once the iPhone 3GS was jailbroken, it was only a matter of time before unlocking was possible.
According to George:
“Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.”

Consumer Reports: iPhone 3GS is Best
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Product Reviews,
Consumer Reports says that Apple’s new iPhone 3GS is still at the top of the smartphone heap in terms of multimedia, browsing, battery life, display, and navigation. The Palm Pre with WebOS, Samung Omnia, and BlackBerry Storm were close behind, however. The Pre scored higher in messaging and multitasking. CR also claims that Verizon seems to be the carrier that most believe to be the best when surveyed, but that’s no big surprise.

Apple Stores Now Fixing Cracked iPhone Screens
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds,

Clumsy iPhone owners rejoice, because Apple Stores across the country are now fixing cracked iPhone screens in-house. This is definitely a change from the past, as the Apple Store would just hand new iPhones to customers who were still under warranty if they had a cracked screen. Depending on which Apple Store locations you visited, you may have just been outright denied help with a cracked screen as well.
Apple stores now have a process by which they can repair cracked iPhone screen. They have a machine that separates broken glass from the rest of the phone, allowing the Apple store technician to install a new screen.
Of course, if you are out of warranty, the service won’t be free. However, for those of you under AppleCare, you can rest a bit easier knowing that Apple can now repair a cracked iPhone screen, so go ahead and throw away that ugly rubber case.

Verizon Decides to Offer BlackBerry Tour to Existing Customers
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Handhelds,

It looks like Verizon has decided to start offering the BlackBerry Tour to existing customers. Originally, Verizon planned to only offer the Blackberry Tour to new and qualified customers. However, due to all the negative press, it appears that they’ve changed their tune, as their BlackBerry Tour page now states that “existing customers will be able to upgrade or purchase the Blackberry Tour.” They haven’t given any further info on how existing customer upgrades will work, however they say interested customers should come back to the website tomorrow for more information. We are definitely liking the fact that mobile providers seem to finally started to be listening to their customers. As you recall, AT&T changed their iPhone 3GS upgrade policy due to heavy backlash from current iPhone 3G customers who wanted to upgrade immediately.

WildCharge Bundle for BlackBerry Curve
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Handhelds, Misc. Tech, Wireless / WiFi,
At times we tend to ignore BlackBerry users so it was nice to find this accessory. The WildCharge Bundle was designed for the Curve 8300 smartphone. The urethane Skin fits over the BlackBerry and is embedded with a contact module that connects with the surface of the Pad. Available in matte black, who says wireless charging has to look tacky? The bundle is available for $79.99 (and the company also makes them for iPhones.)
