Another Microsoft Courier video shows how it’ll work

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Design, Displays, Handhelds, Microsoft, Rumors,
Remember that Microsoft Courier video we showed you last week? Well our friends at Gizmodo were able to uncover a bit more about the mysterious and astonishing Microsoft tablet device. In the leaked video above, you get a look at the way that the fine folks in Redmond think you’ll integrate the Courier tablet device into your everyday life. We must say, it’s insanely slick, and we hope that it works exactly as shown. Of course, this is just a demo, and it doesn’t even feature a real hand or stylus.
That said, we are big fans of the “infinite journal” approach, and we can certainly see a lot of professional uses for such a device with a natural input system. What we are still curious about, though, is if this thing is also meant to be a multimedia device. You know, movies, games, music? The things that we are expecting the Apple tablet to excel at? Or is this a case of Microsoft recognizing that Apple has a stronghold in that area, and as such, they’ll focus on a different, underserved demographic? Time will tell.

JVC Picsio GC-FM1 should hit Japan by October

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Cameras, Handhelds,

It would appear that JVC is going into the Kodak Z series territory with the Picsio GC-FM1. As you can see, it is one of those rectangular frame jobs with 1080p video, 8-megapixel stills, a 2-inch LCD, as well as HDMI out.
These video cameras are set to hit Japan by the beginning of October for about $220. However, we found this odd video that is reminiscent of Mr. Peanut and those animated M&M guys. You might notice that there are at least two western languages (English and French) in the commercial. We’re betting that it’ll make its way to Europe and North America soon.

Hey, all you Palm Pre owners out there, it’s update time, as webOS 1.2 has just been released. What’s new in the software? Quite a bit, according to Palm:
For starters, we’ve beefed up Palm Synergy to include LinkedIn contact syncing. Info from LinkedIn profiles (like job titles) will now appear in your Palm Pre contacts. The new update also facilitates links across more different flavors of IM contacts. Business-oriented webOS 1.2 customers will also appreciate support for heterogeneous EAS policies (for workplaces with a mix of end-users in which some accounts support EAS policies and others don’t).
And we heard your feedback on a number of topics loud and clear:
- We know you love email—and you’ll really love the ability to filter the emails in the current folder just by typing a search term.
- You asked for the ability to download files in the browser—and now you’ve got it.
- Music fans will be glad to hear that the Amazon MP3 Store can now download songs from either WiFi or WAN.
- You can now tap a phone number in a calendar note to dial it (so you can get to the joy of music-on-hold for your conference calls even faster!).
- Pause a podcast and, by default, you’ll pick up where you left off when you unpause.
- Web pages and emails are now cut-and-paste-able.
You can download the webOS 1.2.0 update right now. Let us know how it goes!

Microsoft’s Courier tablet: We need one immediately

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, Displays, Handhelds, Microsoft, Rumors,

Our friends at Gizmodo recently got a fantastic scoop, revealing a project that Microsoft has been working on, known as the Courier tablet. This device has been a secret for the Microsoft for a long time now. According to Giz, this is more than just a concept device, but rather, Courier is in the “late prototype” stage.
Courier has two 7-inch screens that are touch sensitive, and are designed to be interacted by touch or with the very pen-like stylus. On its hinge is a home button like the iPhone, and this hinge serves as a virtual “pocket” to hold items that are moved from one screen to the other.
No word on price or availability just yet, but you have to admit that it looks quite sexy. Of course, this may not even come to fruition, but it’s a bold challenge to Apple’s dominance in the sexy multitouch devices department.
