I was as surprised as you were when I found out the PDA we hinted at last week was actually going to be palmOne's Tungsten T5. For $399 you get: 215 Megs of storage space, portable drive functionality, a 320 x 480 display, MP3 playback, and Bluetooth. While I love the form factor, I still find it a little steep, plus it's sorely lacking Wi-Fi. And this is supposed to be their high end model.

Gallery: It’s a Tungsten T5! Umm…OK!

Today an image of an upcoming Tungsten handheld was posted (and then removed, apparently) on Amazon.com. As you can see, it appears to be a slider-less model, with a 320x480 display. Rumors are also pointing to a release as early as next Tuesday. October has traditionally been a month for new handheld announcements by palmOne, so I'm inclined to believe this news. There's no word as to whether it's the successor to the Tungsten E (most likely) or if it will be billed as the Tungsten T5. I'm still holding on to see how long my M515 lasts, but if it did break, I'd probably jump for one of these, considering I don't like slider designs.

There's a new shareware application that will display a full-screen thumboard in lieu of the standard system keyboard on your T3. Considering how the T3 screen is expandable, this should be a pretty comfortable option. Thumboard is compatible with all Palm OS applications which use a standard text field. It also provides visual and audio feedback for every key press, along with automatic repetition and "hold" for the keys that use it most frequently (such as backspace, delete, directional pad). The keyboard can be accessed or hidden with just a hardware button press. You can download Thumboard here. The shareware application costs $14.95 USD to register and includes free updates for a year.

It's getting increasingly easier to look cool while still being high-tech. PalmOne just began to offer some fashionable accessories for their various handhelds and smartphones. The new high-end Persona accessory line is making its introduction with some quality personalizable leather cases. The Vaja cases offer a nice variety of colors, along with the option to emboss your name on the back cover or the inside lid.

Although the worldwide handheld market shows a slight increase of 3.2% from first quarter to second quarter of 2004, it still posted a 2.2% drop from second quarter of 2003, according to research firm IDC's recent study. PalmOne showed a notable growth over the last quarter, while HP showed a loss of its market share during the same period. Sony continues to hold on to 7.8% of the market, though that is a much smaller percentage than last year. This is in part due to their announcement to discontinue its Clie line outside of Japan.

Gallery: Handheld Market in Slight Decline Compared to 2003
HP today introduced several new iPAQ handhelds. Pictured here is their new top-of-the-line hx4705, which features a 4-inch 640 x 480 VGA color display, and an Intel PXA270 processor clocked at 624 MHz. Other goodies include 128 MB of Flash ROM and 64 MB of RAM. It also offers both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, as well as dual card slots for Secure Digital and Compact Flash. Another notable feature is a laptop-like touch-pad in place of the usual directional pad.
