If you live in Seattle (like me) or Los Angeles, you know a thing or two about traffic. I-5 can be a total nightmare during rush hour. TrafficGauge brings a portable device that alerts you to the traffic conditions in realtime. It runs on two AA batteries and lasts for about six months. It doesn’t win any points for looks, and I wonder what the benefit it of dropping $50 in addition to the $5 monthly fee on the device when I can just turn on the news at home or on the car radio. The reason I mentioned Seattle and LA earlier is because TrafficGauge only supports these two areas for the time being.

This seems to be a Japan exclusive, but who knows – maybe Sony will surprise us (April Fools!). Either way, this unit looks just awesome. The Gran Turismo logo in the corner does detract just a bit. However, with this one the headphones and strap match the PSP’s color.

For one of a number of possible reasons, the Sony Playstation Portable is just not selling out in the United States. Sony predicted they would sell 1 million PSP’s by or on launch date. They’ve sold roughly half a million since launch one week ago, and stores are not experiencing widespread shortages. Whatever the case, it’s an amazing piece of tech gadgetry, so go out and pick one up. They’re in stock. They’re shiny. You won’t be disappointed. We do not work for Sony.

Melodious Walkabout Auditory Navigation System

If you have ever been lost in a huge place, the Melodious Walkabout might be just the thing for you. Using the device, you simply listen to a few songs and are directed to your destination through audio cues without the need to have to ask for directions.
It provides a mobile user with awareness where the destination is located by contextualizing audio contents the user is listening to. The mobile user wears headphones and hears audio contents that reach him from a certain direction. The direction of the virtual sound source unobtrusively tells him in which direction to go.
So you just continue to walk in the general direction of where the music is coming from, and once it you are surrounded by it, you have arrived. The Melodious Walkabout consists of a Bluetooth GPS-receiver, a Geographical Information System that calculates the direction and distance to the destination, and an auditory display that renders personal audio contents in real-time according to the GIS.

Thanks to a Toshiba Corporation announcement today, it seems that we are near the point where we can say goodbye to the wait time for recharging lithium-ion batteries. Toshiba’s new battery can recharge 80% of the battery’s capacity in one minute, 60 times faster than a conventional lithium-ion battery. According to the announcement, we have new nano-material technology to thank for this much much needed improvement. Now if someone can only make the batteries last longer, we’ll all be in digital heaven that much more quickly.

I got my shiny new PSP today at Gamestop. There I was, all psyched up and ready to roll. I was prepared to experience the joy that comes will all things new and electronic - and BAM! Three dead pixels on the right hand side. Many have reported that this is a problem with their PSP’s. This is most likely due to the fact that Sony ramped up production to get a million units ready for the US launch. I just returned from my local Gamestop, and unfortunately they have no PSP’s in stock (surprise!), and they don’t know when they will receive more. I did manage to get them to agree to call me as soon as they get one for exchange. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Not much to say about this one, as it is pretty obvious what’s going on here. The Gizmondo gaming device is pictured here, and it has two problems. First of all, the design just looks atrocious. Secondly, the system Windows software interface has crashed. Come on now. This is apparently why most gaming handhelds fail. Where is the simplicity?

Sony PSP Midnight Launch Coverage

I was owned. I mean, completely owned by the impending launch of this sexy device. The PSP images swam in my head daily, the unquenchable desire of having it in my hand invaded my dreams, and its capabilities punctuated almost all my conversations. It is handheld gaming taken to a whole new level, and after a great launch in Japan a few months ago it was finally coming to the US in grand fashion. Today we’re covering the midnight launch experience in New York City, at the same time that we look at how this thing changed lives.
