Monitor

This is another example of getting rid of 2 devices when just one will do. Mitsubishi has come out with an Viseo HD LCD screen with a built-in digital tuner, supposedly the first of its kind in Japan. The MDT221WTF has a 21.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a contrast ration of 2000:1. The HDTV also features Diatone sound, 2 HDMI inputs and an analog D-SUB 15 pin input. Look for the price of ¥80,000 (~$800.00) and a November release.

TV With AntennaIn a survey done recently by ABI Research, the results showed that when the dreaded digital change occurs in February, 70% will attach a digital converter. As for the rest of the participants, 10% say they will switch to cable or satellite service, and 20% will just let their TVs “go dark.” Analyst Steve Wilson says the the data suggests that there will be some overall terrestrial viewers who will use other venues for entertainment such as broadband video, DVD rentals, or other online alternatives.

AQUOS logoWe figured it had to be coming eventually and it appears that the time is here. Sharp has sent out a press release that they are combining their 16 AQUOS DS Series LCDs with Blu-ray recorders. The Digital W tuner allows simultaneous watching while recording another program/movie in HD. The TVs will range from 26 to 52-inches, and each features a motion guide, preset functions, and 3 color variations. Look for a release date of November 20 in Japan.

Insignia Blu-ray Player

Best Buy is selling its Insignia Blu-ray Player for very little funds. The NS-BRDVD features Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD support, has a built-in SD card slot, and upconverts standard DVDs to 1080p. After a $30.00 rebate, the player will set you back only $199.99 and the company is throwing in a coupon book good for $100.00 off select Blue-ray movies. It is available both online and in their stores. Our first impression is to go to the store and compare it with another using the same TV, but we don’t really want to spoil the inexpensive moment.

Samsung BD-P1500We told you a while ago about a Limited Edition Matrix Collection that comes with Nebuchadnezzar. Samsung must have thought that was a good idea and it is tossing in the movies (sans vehicle) with the sale of their BD-P1500. The 10-disc set was released today and retails for around $100.00 depending on where you shop. We figure that’s a pretty good deal considering the Blu-ray player can be had for $223.00 up to $299.00, again dependent on online retailers. Prices are only good through October 18.

SlingCatcher

Yesterday, our pals over at Sling Media announced that their long-awaited was finally shipping and hitting store shelves. The unit, which “catches” what’s being “pitched” by a SlingBox, the Internet, or an attached USB storage device, has been available for pre-order for the past month. Our only real problem with the device at this time is that some of the main functionality is only available to those running Windows XP SP2 or Vista, OS X users are out of luck for now on the really cool feature that lets you highlight a portion of your screen for the SlingCatcher to capture and display on a television.

The SlingCatcher can be had for $299.99. If you wanna see it in action, check out our video after the jump.

Netflix price increase

has been charging new members a $1 monthly fee, in addition to the price of their standard monthly rate, for the pleasure of renting discs, while those who have been members of the service for a long while have had no such increase to deal with. Well, as of November 5th, Netflix will make the $1 fee mandatory for all members. If you don’t want to rent Blu-ray discs, you are fine, no change in price - but if you, like us, are all about the 1080p, lossless surround sound goodness, then I think you’ll find that paying one extra dollar isn’t really so bad. Seriously, it could have been a lot worse.

BD-300 Player

LG’s BD-300 Blu-ray Player is almost here. As we told you back in August, the player up-converts standard DVD to 1080p and allows Netflix subscribers access to over 12,000 titles. You can now pre-order the player from Circuit City for $349.99 and it will begin shipping soon. Amazon offers the BD-300 in price ranges of $379.00 up to $399.95 and says that they are in stock. This is certainly one instance that Amazon is not the bargain site for ordering.
