Wilmington Goes All-DTV Early

Wilmington, North Carolina volunteered to be the very first U.S. market to change to digital-only television broadcasting. While the rest of us have to wait until February, the lucky city’s Mayor Bill Saffo and FCC’s Michael Copps pulled a pseudo switch to mark the event. More than 69,000 coupons for 37,500 households in the Wilmington market were requested. Those who didn’t purchase the ATCS tuners will see a crawl at the bottom of their screen with a toll-free number to get with the plan.
Mayor Saffo said, “If nobody calls, it doesn’t mean there wasn’t a problem. And if a thousand people call it doesn’t mean this wasn’t a success. Because success is ultimately going to be measured by what we’ve learned and can put in place to do next February.”

TiVo HD XL now shipping: 1 terabyte storage, THX certified, $599.99

We knew it was just a matter of time before our friends at TiVo finally released something a little more, robust, to take the place of the discontinued TiVo Series3 DVR. While the TiVo HD is a nice unit, it just wasn’t the premium product that the Series3 was. The TiVo HD XL is all about taking that premium spot, and it certainly looks like a worthy replacement. The unit ships with a 1 terabyte hard drive, which means it can record up to 150 hours of HD programming, HDMI cable, along with a premium Series3 backlit TiVo remote. The TiVo HD XL features dual tuners, which lets you record two programs at the same time, and is even THX certified (something that the TiVo HD can’t brag about.) The one jarring piece here is the price, as the TiVo HD XL is selling for $599.99. Panasonic DIGA Series Blu-ray Player/Burner

Panasonic has come up with 3 DIGA Series Blu-ray disc players/burners. With built-in HDD, each has a dual digital TV tuner, a USB port, an HDMI output, a SD/SDHC card slot, and supports DTS-HD Master/ Dolby NR TrueHD/Dolby Digital plus codecs. Available September 1, the DIGAS have a writing speed of 6X in AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) format. Select between the DMR-BW930 model with 1TB, the BW830 with 500 GB, or the BW730 that holds 320GB. Prices start at € 900 (~$1,328.00.)

LG BD300 Blu-ray Disc Player Streams Netflix Films

LG and Netflix have teamed to create the first Blu-ray disc player that will also stream from Nextflix directly to your TV. In addition to beginning play in about 30 seconds, the BD300 will up-convert standard DVDs to 1080p and allow subscribers to view over 12,000 movies and TV shows. After adding them to your online queue, you can then access them on your TV. The player includes fast-forward and rewind applications, and you can rate your picks and advise others. Look forward to a fall debut for the BD300.

NEC Plasma Screen Knows Too Much

Next time you head to Japan, you may just see evidence of Big Brother. NEC has been working on a plasma display screen that houses a camera. It can identify a person’s age and sex for specific ads. You hold up your cellphone to the 50-inch display and a QR code with URL will send you additional product information. Since we think this is a little too much information for us, we would rather do our shopping in the privacy of our own computer. Yeah, like that’s safe.
